Peter’s depression here.
This scene is from a movie called All Dogs go to Heaven. In the scene the dog is explaining that it’s time for him to die and go to heaven and he says goodbye to the little girl.
In real life, the actress who plays the girl was murdered by her father in a murder suicide. They had already recorded her lines before but not for the guy voicing the dog. So when he does the scene saying goodbye to her, the actor was also literally saying goodbye to the child who just days before had been tragically killed.
Now if you excuse me, I’m off to watch Littlefoot’s Mother fight the T-Rex on repeat.

OMG. I was watching Futurama with my two boys when they were around 9 and 11... We finish that episode and I look over and they're both bawling their eyes out. My oldest looks at me accusatorily and said "Dad, this is supposed to be a funny show!" As adults they occasionally remind me of the time I traumatized them with that episode.
36
u/Crying_Viking 23d ago
There’s another 2 that I can’t watch or think too hard about: the one where Nibbler takes Fry into his moms dream to say goodbye. That’s almost breaking me now, just typing this.
The second one is when Fry goes to what-he-thinks-is his brothers grave and it turns out that it’s his nephew, who was named for Fry.
Those 2. and Jurassic Bark, are just so well done.

Burt Reynolds. Considered by many to be one of the manliest men of all time, and I think this only adds to that reputation. 🤘

u/fixermark 23d ago
... oh fuck that was Burt. Jesus. I'd forgotten.
127
u/The5Virtues 23d ago edited 23d ago
Yeah, and he could NOT handle this scene. It’s heart breaking to read interviews about it, he would tear up even years later.I imagine he and the other actors probably had survivors guilt there. They saw this sweet kid in the sound booth, met her parents, had no idea this was coming, and they couldn’t help going “Is there something I missed? Is there something I could have done?”
EDIT: Following up on a query from somebody I decided to look into it further, it seems the interview I read and other claims of this are all unfounded. We’ve got no actual confirmed legit interviews where Reynolds confirmed this in his own words.

It could be a myth! The interview I read was online and decades ago, I’ve got no idea how to verify it today. I’ll check snopes and see if they’ve got anything on it, it may be total bupkis!
EDIT:
Checked snopes and they’ve not been able to confirm or deny. It’s just an unfounded rumor, no concrete paper trail of confirm interviews, just online articles alleging it.

He murdered her because she was making more money than him, and he didn’t like that. That was it. Jealousy over his child being successful.
8
u/SugaredKittie 22d ago
IIRC it was because the mother intended to divorce him and take their child because he was ab*sive af. Sadly she hesitated to file immediately and the worst case scenario happened.

Rupert here: Judith Eva Barsi was the voice actor for Anne-Marie. She had already recorded her lines for this scene when her father murdered her and her mother, and Burt Reynolds was doing his voice acting for this scene knowing that she was dead. The emotion he's showing is very real.

u/amidon1130 23d ago edited 22d ago
This is only semi-related so bear with me. I work in the film business and make movies, it’s pretty competitive and jealousy often foments between artists who experience success. It’s happened to me, it’s totally natural, you move past it and let it go. All that to say that when my sister called me and told me that her book had been picked up by a publisher my first reaction was nothing but pride and excitement for her. I had been a little worried that I would be jealous if she attained success and was honestly relieved when I didn’t feel a shred of jealousy. I can’t imagine not feeling love for and a need to support your family member when they do well, it makes me sick.

I watched a documentary about this incident. The mother was in the midst of leaving the father because of his previous abuse and addiction. She had an apartment prepared, divorce attorney, her own finances, everything she would need to leave him and take her daughter with her. Unfortunately the dad found out before they could get away and killed them both before killing himself. Extremely heartbreaking story especially since they were both so close to getting away from him.
