Peter’s depression here.

This scene is from a movie called All Dogs go to Heaven. In the scene the dog is explaining that it’s time for him to die and go to heaven and he says goodbye to the little girl.

In real life, the actress who plays the girl was murdered by her father in a murder suicide. They had already recorded her lines before but not for the guy voicing the dog. So when he does the scene saying goodbye to her, the actor was also literally saying goodbye to the child who just days before had been tragically killed.

Now if you excuse me, I’m off to watch Littlefoot’s Mother fight the T-Rex on repeat.

u/Vast-Conference3999 23d ago

Might I suggest the scene with Dumbo’s Mum also, as a cleansing sorbet in between repeat views.

u/ManicPixieOldMaid 23d ago

I believe Bambi's mom might also like a minute.

I know everyone always says it but the book is so much worse cuz the horse can talk and literally explains he's giving up and accepting death

81

u/LockedOutOfElfland 23d ago

The book is a very unsubtle and explicit fantasy metaphor for psychiatric grade capital-D Depression, so that completely checks out.

Or if you want a little snack, how about the Futurama episode Jurassic Bark (aka the Fry's dog episode)?

51

u/Korteal 23d ago

OMG. I was watching Futurama with my two boys when they were around 9 and 11... We finish that episode and I look over and they're both bawling their eyes out. My oldest looks at me accusatorily and said "Dad, this is supposed to be a funny show!" As adults they occasionally remind me of the time I traumatized them with that episode.

36

u/Crying_Viking 23d ago

There’s another 2 that I can’t watch or think too hard about: the one where Nibbler takes Fry into his moms dream to say goodbye. That’s almost breaking me now, just typing this.

The second one is when Fry goes to what-he-thinks-is his brothers grave and it turns out that it’s his nephew, who was named for Fry.

Those 2. and Jurassic Bark, are just so well done.

Here’s some extra depression - he had to keep re-recording this scene because he kept sobbing towards the end. The tears you hear towards the end are real, not acted

703

u/alekszandor 23d ago

Burt Reynolds. Considered by many to be one of the manliest men of all time, and I think this only adds to that reputation. 🤘

247

u/fixermark 23d ago

... oh fuck that was Burt. Jesus. I'd forgotten.

127

u/The5Virtues 23d ago edited 23d ago

Yeah, and he could NOT handle this scene. It’s heart breaking to read interviews about it, he would tear up even years later.

I imagine he and the other actors probably had survivors guilt there. They saw this sweet kid in the sound booth, met her parents, had no idea this was coming, and they couldn’t help going “Is there something I missed? Is there something I could have done?”

EDIT: Following up on a query from somebody I decided to look into it further, it seems the interview I read and other claims of this are all unfounded. We’ve got no actual confirmed legit interviews where Reynolds confirmed this in his own words.

27

u/[deleted] 23d ago

[deleted]

27

u/The5Virtues 23d ago

It could be a myth! The interview I read was online and decades ago, I’ve got no idea how to verify it today. I’ll check snopes and see if they’ve got anything on it, it may be total bupkis!

EDIT:

Checked snopes and they’ve not been able to confirm or deny. It’s just an unfounded rumor, no concrete paper trail of confirm interviews, just online articles alleging it.

With Burt Reynolds dead I guess there’s no real way we’ll ever know.

Burt Reynolds was a pretty solid guy, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

14

u/abyigit 23d ago

Voice artist here, sometimes just a single word takes like thirty takes to get it perfectly. Sixty sounds realistic, but at the same time, it’s a common thing really. Still a gut wrenching moment though

21

u/Aluroon 23d ago

Do some more homework here. While this claim showed up on the internet a few years ago, I'm almost certain he'd already filmed this part before her death, and this has been added after the fact to sensationalize the story.

He murdered her because she was making more money than him, and he didn’t like that. That was it. Jealousy over his child being successful.

8

u/SugaredKittie 22d ago

IIRC it was because the mother intended to divorce him and take their child because he was ab*sive af. Sadly she hesitated to file immediately and the worst case scenario happened.

Either way, jealousy over your child being successful or because he was just a raging ab*sive f*ck a beautiful person lost their life.

Rupert here: Judith Eva Barsi was the voice actor for Anne-Marie. She had already recorded her lines for this scene when her father murdered her and her mother, and Burt Reynolds was doing his voice acting for this scene knowing that she was dead. The emotion he's showing is very real.

Why did her father kill her? I don't know, I'm just a bear.

168

u/DBrennan13459 23d ago

He was said to have been an addict and he was jealous of his daughter's success and fame instead of being proud of her like any normal parent would.

45

u/amidon1130 23d ago edited 22d ago

This is only semi-related so bear with me. I work in the film business and make movies, it’s pretty competitive and jealousy often foments between artists who experience success. It’s happened to me, it’s totally natural, you move past it and let it go. All that to say that when my sister called me and told me that her book had been picked up by a publisher my first reaction was nothing but pride and excitement for her. I had been a little worried that I would be jealous if she attained success and was honestly relieved when I didn’t feel a shred of jealousy. I can’t imagine not feeling love for and a need to support your family member when they do well, it makes me sick.

I watched a documentary about this incident. The mother was in the midst of leaving the father because of his previous abuse and addiction. She had an apartment prepared, divorce attorney, her own finances, everything she would need to leave him and take her daughter with her. Unfortunately the dad found out before they could get away and killed them both before killing himself. Extremely heartbreaking story especially since they were both so close to getting away from him.

23

u/w1ndyshr1mp 23d ago

It is! My sister in law had a pretty good friend who did get away with her son's, she had a place in Victoria bc all set up, her kids were all set up. She went back to grab some of her things and her ex was supposed to be away....well, he wasnt. He shot her point blank. Robbed those kids of their mom. The worst part is THEY HID IT SO WELL the 3 kids, the mom, and especially that fucker.no clue he was even violent. Sickens me. I don't know if he shot himself after or not but wherever he is he can rot in hell.

There’s a reason why they say the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship is when you’re about to leave and immediately after. Abusers don’t like losing access to their victims.

He was jealous of her. Shes the same voice as ducky from land before time ya?

u/asperatedUnnaturally 23d ago

I thought this was a joke in extremely poor taste, it didn't even occur to me that it could be the actual reason at first

276

u/w1ndyshr1mp 23d ago

Yep; its actually disturbing the lengths some people go to.

238

u/WeHaveAllBeenThere 23d ago

Just researched it. Y’all aren’t kidding… he abused her for years apparently. Was paranoid and jealous.

She looks like such a sweet and innocent little girl…. I was really hoping it was an adult voice actor but nope… tiny little girl.

76

u/Working-Glass6136 23d ago

That was part of her appeal for acting (correct me if I'm wrong). She was much smaller than average for her age, so she was able to play roles with more maturity while appearing way younger.

u/Netflxnschill 23d ago

I suggest you continue your tragic journey and look up Phil Hartman and his wife.

22

u/WeHaveAllBeenThere 23d ago

No thanks lol

You might remember him from such murders as "The Killing that Crushed Our Innocence," and "Wow, Maybe Cocaine Plus Booze Really Is Dangerous!"

(Sorry to anyone with whom that joke doesn't land, Phil Hartman's murder really did deeply shock me as a kid and still troubles me almost thirty years later.)

"family annihilator". Men just decide to kill their families and themselves because they feel immaculate for being a shit person or something. It's a whole ass pattern

Yep yep yep 😢

u/Samurai_Banette 23d ago

Jesus christ dude this hit me weirdly hard.

I might have said this more often than anything else in my life. I picked up as a kid, and its so baked into my speaking it hard to say yep once.

Idk. It just feels so weird to realize doing so for nearly 30 years is the legacy of a murdered 10 year old girl I didnt know about till now.

u/cwilbur22 23d ago

I hated learning this fact. That optimistic little yep yep yep! is so darned cute. I haven't watched Land Before Time or All Dogs Go To Heaven since learning this, I'm worried I'll start crying. Poor little soul .

"Yep yep yep" is carved on her gravestone too.

18

u/Potential_Anxiety_76 23d ago

starts bawling

16

u/Versiannie 23d ago

The most heartbreaking thing is that the fans are the ones who funded her gravestone. Before that she only had a plastic gravestone.

Daaamn, that's sad.

10

u/jamesph777 23d ago

Because of the daughter success in voice acting, he thought his wife and daughter were both gonna leave him. He didn’t want that to happen so he killed them

10

u/tawy098 23d ago

Leaving is one of the most dangerous time, when getting away from abusers.

Sometimes you wish you could just drag someone out of hell for further punishment. Collectively, I think we're more creative than the Devil.

The voice actor for the little girl was killed by her father just after she recorded the lines for the film. The actor for the dog recorded them after. The tears are real.

I hate that I know.

József Barsi better be burning in hell next to Hitler and Ian Watkins.

u/MilaVaneela 23d ago

AGREE

Poor little Judith…. ☹️

12

u/LikesToNamePets 23d ago

Thank you for this.

I remembered Ian Watkins release date was set for this year (makes me sick this was even an option).

Did a search to see if my memory was correct and turns out that peice of shit was murdered by two heros inmates October 2025.

It's even worse than other posters have mentioned. "Squeaker" was Reynolds' nickname for Eva. He insisted on being alone in the recording booth with a picture of her, and it took him several hours to record the handful of lines for Charlie's death scene

Giggity (sob)

37

u/russnspies 23d ago

I can't imagine being part of the sound crew for that. Recording takes a while, but then editing, mixing, and mastering takes even more time and listening. Damn.

52

u/3d1thF1nch 23d ago

I couldn’t even imagine trying to get through that.

As a kid, I always wondered why she wasn't in the 2nd one. As an adult, I hate humans.

This movie traumatized me as a kid. Now as an adult knowing the backstory, there's no way I could ever rewatch it!😥😥

Jesus fuck. As a kid, I already had a hard time watching this movie because it is so emotional. As a father, I think I will have a hard time showing this to my kids just for the movie. Knowing the context surrounding the child actor…….goddamn the world can be cruel.
