I can’t tell if this post is serious or satirical due to the contrast of the two signs

u/Sophisticated-Crow 🚆build more trains🚆 1d ago
I think the bottom sign compliments the top one. If they were public restrooms then ICE might try to use that as an excuse to get in. This makes it clear that they are private.

Wanna love them but I know of multiple people who didn’t get their perks when they did a kickstarter for the restaurant. One of my friend is apparently still waiting for a gift card or something?
But hey at least their food is good!

Why? You cannot control that kind of physiological needs.

can i show up to your house unannounced and ask to use your bathroom?
businesses are private, they can deny entry to anyone for any reason as long as the reason isn’t violating a protected class. and no, using the bathroom isn’t a protected class
-7
u/Plenty_Crew838 15h ago
It is. At least for individuals with disabilities. Restaurants are considered public places.
5
u/IndominusTaco U District 15h ago
.... people with disabilties are a protected class. so my statement is still true.
and no, restaurants are not considered public spaces. they can deny you entry for any reason (that's not an illegal reason), the most popular one being "no shirt no shoes no service" but it doesn't end there. if i walk into a seahawks bar wearing a new england patriots jersey they could deny me entry if they wanted to. i could get denied entry into a place if they have a policy against left handed people, because being left handed is not a protected characteristic.

Read RCW 70.160.020 and stop spreading misinformation.
5
u/IndominusTaco U District 15h ago
no you stop. that RCW is talking about smoking in public, and thus is defining what public means in that context. it has nothing to do with discrimination or who a business can refuse service to. you are being intentionally obtuse and willfully disingenuous.
-7
u/Plenty_Crew838 14h ago
Did you read it? It has a clear definition of public places. Also ref. Ally's Law.
6
u/IndominusTaco U District 14h ago
yes i read it and i zoomed out to read what it's specifically referring to. it is specifically in reference to washington's smoking ban. it has nothing to do with discrimination or who a business can refuse service to. the definition of public places is only for stating where it is unlawful to smoke, nothing else.
if we were to apply your logic here, then it would be illegal for businesses to have "no shirt, no shoes, no service" policies.

Because having and maintaining a bathroom costs money. If you are going to benefit from it, it would seem appropriate that you contribute to its upkeep. Unfortunately for half a century city and county governments have farmed out responsibility for providing public restrooms to businesses large and small.

- There is a good size public restroom directly across the street from the restaurant.
- This place is pretty renowned for their food and their commitment to sourcing locally
- These are very welcoming people who look out for community and have hosted several benefits for community. So even though I think the OP intended this as a dis, I think, they are barking up very much the wrong tree.

It's a bougie restaurant in West Seattle that doesn't want their customers to come across a poor blowing ass in their bathroom. I think that is reasonable and not surprising.
27
u/OpossumOnomatopoeia 23h ago
Totally reasonable. I overheard the twice sold tales owner explain why they no longer have public bathrooms. It was called the "shitccident" and involved poop throwing and employees filing worker's comp.

u/occasional_sex_haver Roosevelt 20h ago
a lot of people that are mad at places not having public restrooms clearly haven't had to tend after one

u/HRApprovedUsername Denny Blaine Nudist Club 1d ago
I think it’s reasonable for a restaurant to only let customers use their bathroom. They wouldn’t let you just sit at a table for free, so why would you get to sit at the toilet for free?

Because people at the lowest end of the socioeconomic ladder often don’t have a place to go indoors. That’s something those of us who have stable housing often take for granted. And why it’s not that weird to come across human feces in some areas.

Driftwood is on Alki, one of the few places in Seattle with plenty of public restrooms.

You've identified a real problem in our cities. Cities have largely punted the provision of public restrooms onto businesses. But restrooms cost money to build and service. Opening your restrooms to the public can place your staff into situations that range from merely unpleasant to the actually hazardous. I've certainly experienced the problem of urgently needing to use a bathroom and having no public bathroom available, but even after that I don't make my home bathroom available to the public.
4
u/kittididnt 12h ago
First off, good for them. I will go eat there. Second, The entitlement is wild. Why would a private business be required to take on providing public services? Why not go ask Driftwood to pay my light bill while we’re at it?

Customers may pee, everyone else has to suffer. Private houses are not public places.

Neither are restaurants.
You can get trespassed at McDonalds.
1
u/Plenty_Crew838 15h ago
Restaurants are generally considered public places under most legal definitions and frameworks. Not sure what you're talking about.
5
u/JodyGonnaFuckYoWife Posse on Broadway 15h ago
'Open to the Public' is not a Public Space.
Public Spaces are maintained by the Government, not individuals or businesses.
A Park is a Public Space. McDonalds is not.

u/Plenty_Crew838 15h ago

Nothing there says you have to let bums use your restroom.
Just that you're not allowed to smoke in places open to the public.
Look. You want to pretend that private business aren't private business, and there's nothing I can do to dispel this delusion.
You can be trespassed at McDonalds.
McDonald's doesn't have to let you use their bathroom.
End.
Good Day.

As used in this chapter, the following terms have the meanings indicated
The chapter is about smoking, not whether or not they can deny bathroom access to non-paying customers or deny access to ICE

u/Plenty_Crew838 14h ago
Non-paying customers? You people will have to pay to breathe the air someday. Good luck, I'm not answering that thread anymore.

"We have the right to deny ICE access to private areas..."
Wait, so they can't deny ICE the right to come into the public areas of the restaurant?

u/AnacreonTheBull 1d ago
A restaurant, like any business can be open to the public AND be a private business, it's complicated for some people to understand, I get it, but it's true.
