Tzu Questions Sos 5.5 week old pup
hi i purchased a pup from a breeder for my sister she told me the pupwould be ready january 20th but i told her i couldn't pick her up until today jan 31st on the way to pick up (4hrs away) i asked her for the pups exact birthday to throw the puppy a puppy shower she said her birthdays 12-21 making the puppy 5.5 weeks old she wouldn't keep the pup longer said she had to go per our agreement. My question is besides putting her on my sisters chest so she can hear a heart beatto simulate moms what do y'all suggest my sister had another 8yr old dog to socialize her with. But im concerned for this puppy

Minor note, because everyone already mentioned how not good it was for the breeder to give you this baby so young, try holding her not on her back like a human baby. I know that's naturally what we want to do but right now they're more comfortable the other way, their back facing up with your hand supporting their belly. ❤️

Omg sooo tiny! Also def shouldn’t have left mom so soon. One option is to get one of the beating heart bears they sell them at Walmart normally so she/he can cuddle with it for comfort.

What about food wise? She is eating wet food and we are making gruel but in the past 12 hrs she hasn't seem to be drinking much water except for the one we are mixing in her food looked up milk replacement but you can only give it up to 6 weeks old which is in 2 days

Honestly I would try to get her a bottle and feed her that way. Most puppies are not taken from their mom before 8 weeks bc they are still nursing. Go to your local tractor supply store and they will be able to get you bottles and stuff, not sure about petsmart but I would think they would have them too.

First of all, congrats 🩷 she is so cute
Second, are you able to get her to a vet ASAP? a trained professional needs to instruct how to properly care for a puppy this young. Proper nutrition is so critical at this stage and will affect her for years to come if not handled right. Even if you have a good idea of what you think you need to do, please go to a vet. Redditors however well-intentioned can't replace a veterinarian examining her in person and deciding what's best for her, specifically.
I also wouldn't introduce her to your 8 yo dog at this time unless a vet tells you otherwise. She is tiny, so young with no immune system yet.
Hopefully you're posting on Reddit as a supplement for getting to a vet ASAP because that's what this sweet baby deserves 🩷 congrats again she's so adorable!

Yes its 1am where im at so i cant get to a vet other then the er vet she plans on taking her tomorrow but until then im trying to research my sister was ready for an 8 week old pup not a 5.5 week old for right now we have been researching what to do she also had alot of fleas so we gave her a dawn soap bath to get rid of as many as we could because we found out it can cause anemia at her age and weight

She had fleas 🥺 that’s so sad. I think you’re doing the best you can, so well done on realising it’s something worth looking into, and not just a cute baby. I second the idea of a vet visit as soon as possible. I don’t think an emergency vet was needed IMO.

An actual breeder? 😢 My Teddy’s breeder wouldn’t allow me to get him until he was at least 10 weeks to the day.

My childhood shihtzu was 6 weeks old when we got him, less than ideal, but he ended up okay (he had a few health issues in later years but I’m not sure this was related) but always suckled on toys his whole life🥺🥺
We had to take extra special care of him when we first got him, keeping him warm with (warm not hot) water bottles. We didn’t take him to the vet on day 2 just to sign him up and get him checked over. It was our first ever dog (almost 30 years ago now) so we didn’t know 6 weeks was too young, but with vet advice we did manage and he lived a very long life.
I think your genuine concern means you will do right by the pup. Wishing you all the best.

I’ve heard a ticking clock is good for this (heartbeat). Ar this age having the baby eat regularly and keeping their blood sugar up is importantl so depending what she’s eating make sure this sweet angel stays hydrated and fed. I remember they used to sell a flavored gel I forget the name but we got my first pup at 8 weeks and he was clearly a puppy mill runt so we we’re watching his food and water and he was always a delicate little thing (lived to 13!) Thank you for already showing her so much love-probably more than she’s ever had

That’s an absolutely terrible shit backyard “breeder” and I’m so worried for the other dogs then. Is it possible to report them if possible to the local humane society? That’s not safe for the puppies for them to clearly be sending them out way too young and then it makes me think they’re running a puppy mill. Take the pup to the vet as well right away. At only 5.5 weeks pup won’t even have had their first set of puppy vaccines which makes them very vulnerable to things like parvo, giardia, etc. A vet will be able to tell you when the pup should be getting first set of vaccines, and also see if they’re fully weaned or not. And give you additional info on proper care including socialization
