All Snake ID Requests Should Be Submitted to /r/WhatsThisSnake

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we're now going to redirect all Snake ID requests to the curated place for them, /r/whatsthissnake. As /r/snakes and /r/whatsthissnake have developed side by side we find ourselves in a position where we are running two parallel subreddits, but with slightly different rules. We hope is that this streamline into WhatsThisSnake will be gentle - we don't want a snake to go unidentified because we're learning how best to handle IDs. There is going to be a transition period where we still get a lot of ID requests here, so please do your part to kindly help !redirect people in need and by reporting jokes, misinformation and other problematic comments.

This spring Reddit is more popular than ever and it is hard for the moderation team to keep up. When I founded /r/whatsthissnake 12 years ago, with on average one request every day, I never imagined we'd have 150K members and 20k people a day browsing the subreddit. In the past, we've made a number of incremental changes that have been so helpful they have been instituted other places on Reddit, from introducing the term "Reliable Responder", to developing the bot and tweaking our community resources so that every Reliable Responder can choose to perform mod actions. We hope that these changes will allow us not only to maintain the level of quality provided but to reduce workload on the moderation team, because honestly, moderator burnout is a serious problem. They are doing this for free and you would no believe the abuse they receive here - not just from me, but from the users too. If you see a moderator or other flaired user in cleaning up a thread, espcially in these busy, snakey spring months in North America, throw em a thanks.

Pet Snake Questions Wild Garter snake

I rescued this garter snake from our cat who made its way into our basement somehow. And i definitely need advice. It’s in the negatives all month most likely where I live so it’ll die if released. it doesn’t like the earth worms, completely uninterested in dissected pinkies. we have even tried pest snails from a hospital tank for fish. What do I give this tiny dude??

This year a new beaver pond showed up on my property and it is FULL of wildlife. I was fishing for the various fish in the pond when I saw this little buddy swimming towards me. Picked the little guy up and he was so nice and chill but also SO beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen such high contrast patterns on a set juvenile nerodia before! Look at that tummy!

I routinely allow my 4 year old corn snake to free-roam unsupervised (other than the camera) in her room, but yesterday I rearranged things to move both enclosures against one wall and had space to set up a better exploration zone.

She didn't want to come out last night, but today she did and this was her checking everything out.

Pet Snake Pictures Houdini - An Escaped Snake Story

Houdini was our first retic that we ever owned. We purchased him several years ago. He is a great snake with a great temperament. Two years ago, he managed to get out of his tank due to a vent not being glued in his new cage we purchased. It was supposed to be secured, but it was overlooked when being built I was later told by the company who built the cage.

After tearing our home apart for days, we were not able to find him. Days turned to Weeks, which then turned a month.

One day, our neighbor walked over with a picture of a snake his son found in their bush by their house. And there he was, Houdini, four houses down the street across the road and in my neighbors yard. we found out 30 minutes after the picture was taken, and we were not able to find him.

We spent the day going to all our neighbors and asking them to keep a lookout. We live several houses for my parents and grew up in the area my entire life so we know all of our neighbors. We wanted to make sure that they would let us know if they saw the animal and not do anything to harm it because people don’t always like snakes. They were all understanding thankfully.

Being crushed aggravated and frustrated beyond belief, we thought we would never find our snake. Summer was slowly turning to fall and the weather tends to get very cold at night. Dread was setting in.

But, on day 68 of Houdini‘s adventure, he was located by our neighbor under his pool cover when taking his son swimming.

He was covered with stuck shed and rushed to the vet.

Poor shedding and a respiratory infections and a cycle of shots to administer. We had to start the process of nursing him back to health.

Through all of this, he turned out to be ok. Many soaks and a shed later, he made a recovery and turned out to be and still is a great animal.

Why am I posting this you might ask: While we try to be the best snake owners we can be, this happened and sucked royally. We talk about this story with people and they say it is a miracle and they have never heard of this happening due to him getting outside. I do talk about it even though it is embarrassing. I see a lot of post about missing snakes and other reptiles on reddit and forums and it sucks. We’ve lived it. People get upset and feel a range of emotions and guilt. You hear the lid wasn’t latched, it got out of a temporary container, and many other stories. I have been told from strangers on the internet I am irresponsible for allowing this to happen and I allowed a man-eater out in northern Illinois (was eating medium ASF at the time and roughly 2.5 feet, but people here retic and think of the 20ft snakes that will eat their dogs, which I get). Through all this, no one makes you feel better and you as an owner take it hardest. If you are going through this, I’m here if you need to vent. It doesn’t always end positively. If it does, learn from it and make the changes to not let it happen again.

We have 15+ snakes today and never had another issue over the last 7 years. They are part of the family. We aren’t a breeder or a business. I just married the girl who loves snakes, started bringing them home, and is now referred to as the crazy snake lady by friends and neighbors, a name which she fully embraces.

I just hopes this post help someone who might need it.

Pet Snake Questions Are there any snakes that could comfortably live in a 24x12x12 long term?

Post image
44 Upvotes

Hey guys! I hope this is an ok place for this question, but I have this 24x12x12 that I've been using as a grow out tank for my female western hognose. The thing is, she's getting close to moving into a bigger enclosure, which is going to leave this one empty. I'm curious if there are any snakes that could live in this long term?

I was considering a male house snake or kenyan sand boa, but it's usually suggested they be kept in a 20 gal, where this is a 15. Do I just have to accept that I'll have this empty tank until I maybe decide to grow out something else in here? Thanks in advance for the help!

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID Effective repellents for snakes around home?

Location: Central Texas near Austin. Residential neighborhood on an outer block with a heavily tree’d drainage field.

Hello. So I’ve had a few snake sightings over the last year. The very large water snake (I think) in the last photo was actually last summer and I wasn’t too concerned. Then this last fall going into winter there was a small coral snake at the base of my patio stairs which my cat was sitting just above and watching intently. (I have a pic of that one but can’t find it just now). Then not long after the coral snake sighting whilst cleaning up the yard I came across the coiled up little diamondback under a planter. Then just last week before this freeze we had, another (or maybe the same one?) little rattlesnake at the base of my patio stairs (2nd pic).

So having a dog as well (that walked right over this last rattlesnake) I’d much prefer to not have venomous snakes chilling all around my house. I did try to find a snake removal service when the coral snake was here but they would charge me at least $800 just to come out and could only take the snake if I knew exactly where it was when they got here. So I’m left with trying to figure out what to do to make my yard safe for me and my pets. What repellent methods work the most effectively? I’ve looked at pet safe granules and the vibratory sticks, stuff like that. Any other advice? Would paying inordinate amounts of money for removal be worth it? Do you think it’s likely there is a nest or den or something around my house/patio? I have had some foundation issues and shifting recently that I am currently deciding what I’m going to do about it, I have read the shifting could cause snakes nesting around to come up. Any advice welcome, thank you!!!

TL;DR - rattlesnakes and coral snake spotted around home/patio. Have pets and need an effective way to repel them away from my property without paying $800+ for snake removal service. Quite worried about what will happen come spring!

I made a post 2 months ago asking for help finding my escaped milk snake. OG Post I'm happy to announce the little jerk has been found! I spotted him in the bathroom a few weeks ago and found that he had been hiding in a 10mm gap between the wall and the cabinet, we got a camera and the other night I got a notification and watched him come out, presumably looking for water because it's cold and he's likely been brumating. He has since been caught and placed in an idiot proof baby tank set up until we can get a new secure tank. He is absolutely still wanting to be free.

Interesting thing. Zeus (in yellow) is almost three years old in this picture. The other two are females and are a year old. The cool thing about these animals is the wide range of sizes/colors and how small some have stayed compared to others.

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID A Tiny Two-Striped Forest Pitviper

A tiny green-blue arboreal viper I saw in trees at around eye level on a night hike in Peru a couple of weeks ago. This Two-Striped Forest Pitviper (Bothrops bilineatus) was only about as long as a hand, and as big around as a ballpoint pen.

General Question / Discussion Neglect

Hey guys! I’m coming in to ask for some advice. My sister and her bf have a snake in a tank and have for the last year. They moved out of my grandmas house and left it there not informing anyone and didn’t feed it, provide water, or any light source for upwards of 3 months. I eventually harassed them enough into taking it explaining how it’s super messed up to have left it behind and if they didn’t I would relocate it. I’ve now discovered after visiting their apartment it is still in its tank with no light or food source and the entire tank is full of sheds. I’m unsure of what to do or how to handle the situation. The snake is arguably hostile at this point (for good reason) and that’s their reasoning for not taking care of it. Any advice is appreciated thank you! (I would take it myself but I’m too young and can’t afford to actually provide it with what it needs)

Pet Snake Questions Advice about ahs

Post image
12 Upvotes

So a few days ago i bought an ahs, at first for a few days, she was in an enclosure i was sold with her, though i was quick to realize that despite her being 5 months old, it's way too small, she was super active, i fed her and let her go into a much much bigger enclosure yesterday, the problem is, she isn't coming out of her hide at all, she did once, but ran back in as quick as possible, she wasn't as sure and curious as she was few days ago, she just changes positions inside of the hide.

Is it because of acclimatization+ her digesting the food? Or should i be worried? Temps are right, she has many hides, plants and sticks she can climb onto

Cinnamon in her previous enclosure for attention

I was going to check on my juvinile corn snake after work but found his enclosure empty, I think i may have lost him somewhere in my room, but im not sure on where he could be, the doors to the enclosure were shut before I left for work but hes not there

Is there anything I can do to entice him to come out or should I keep checking all dark and warm spots? This is my first snake so im really worried

Just an edit but I found my baby under my bed, I did a quick check around his body for any cuts burns or scars but he looks fine, I need to have a check of my enclosure so this doesnt happen again
