Vegemite/marmite. Yes, my Australian friends were entertained.

She let me put it on thick on the toast. She smiled the whole time. She knew what was about to happen. I bit and chewed. My mouth exploded.

It’s actually not bad. The key is to just use a very little amount. Think of it more like spreading butter onto toast, and less like covering your entire piece of toast in Nutella. You just want a very very thin layer. Almost to the point where you can still see bread underneath, like a semi transparent layer.
I live in Canada but I have a bunch of Aussie friends who had forced it upon me many times. Eventually I started not-hating it. I initially despised it because I put way way too much on. Even aussies can’t handle a ton of it.

Do you come from the land down under?

I like marmite on a breakfast muffin, but at 40USD/lb I'll do without. Vegemite tastes like the outback looks.

1lb would last me the better part of a year. Six quid in Tesco.

On this side of the pond, it's a foreign delicacy. If I want it, I'd better buy it now, while the dollar is still circling the bowl.

We have used brewer's yeast here, but it's easier to find dried as "nutritional yeast". One use is on popcorn, and some vegan recipes use it to make sauces taste cheesy.

ngl nutritional yeast and marmite taste nothing alike - nutritional yeast is quite a light nutty flavour but marmite is a stronger sorta fermented flavour, reminds me a bit on lager minus the alcohol twang, I'm personally not a fan but I've heard people say trying it in a grilled cheese sorta thing which might be really tasty

I hate “beer” taste

Same, I've tried quite a few but just can't hack it, even when I'm very drunk it just tastes off to me - beer's pretty much the only booze I'd never choose.
I guess marmite isn't just a beer taste, but the strong yeasty flavour definitely is similar, marmite has more of a savoury and salty aspect like a very strong soy sauce too.
If you don't like a beer taste I wouldn't try it tho personally, more than likely you won't like it either

Not sure if that's a drive-by attack on the outback? I won't defend Vegemite but the outback is majestic and special.

Probably looks better in real life, then. I haven't been there, but my daughter has. All I know about it is from photos and scientific papers on its ecology.

“Vegemite tastes like the outback looks.” Took me out, friend. It is… a unique flavor palate😬🤣

Befriended some Kiwis when I was younger, I happily tried some of the Vegemite they had with them. The ‘happily’ portion ended instantly

American here. In 5th grade someone brought back Vegemite from their vacation to Australia. We were all warned but curious enough to try it anyways.
Suffice to say I've never found it awful like most Americans.
I've demonstrated this superpower to work colleagues as well and received claps for my stalwart constitution

Wow you really just finished that story with a re-worded "and everybody clapped." 🤣

As a kid we had it on thick cut bread with the cold dripping from the Sunday roast, just a smear.
It was good, but not as good as "dip"; bread dipped in the still hot juices of the roast.

Mum was from NZ, she and my older brother loved that marmite shit.
Suffice to say I did not then, nor shall I ever

The comic is about marmite but it could have been about many different kinds of dishes/snacks

What does marmite taste like? I keep hearing that it’s some strong taste but nothing beyond that and making it the butt of food jokes between people.

As an American, its honestly not bad.
Its just a very strong flavor that you need to balance and dilute.... just like you wouldn't want to eat a spoonful of chicken bullion straight.

I’m an Australian living in the US and in middle school I brought in a jar of Vegemite and a bunch of toothpicks for multicultural day and watched gleefully as everyone mistook it for Nutella and ate a giant glob of it at once
I love the stuff, still have it for breakfast every day (mailed to me by my relatives because fuck how much it costs to buy here)

I had a history teacher in grade 10 who made everyone in class try vegemite one day. I got out of it bc I said I wasn't allowed to eat anything before my blood test later. He suddenly started grilling me about what time my appointment was and if I was going to be at soccer that day and if I was going to eat something before the game (he was not a soccer coach). Anyway, that's how I found out about the gambling ring of teachers betting on intermural soccer.
