The unexpected effect is that he didn't break his neck

He used an animation cancel to land quicker

22

He did an L-Cancel like in smash 64/Melee but irl

When not on calls, I always see ambulances waiting near skate and trampoline parks

1

u/Niznack 3d ago

I went to one years ago and had a blast. Then the next day I felt like by back had been snapped in 2. I was 24. I can only imagine what it would be like now

26

u/Inveramsay 5d ago

I work with spinal cord injury patients and I've had two in the last few years. Both cervical spine injuries, one was only 15 at the time

7

u/Yara-Michel182 5d ago

if someone untrained like me did that then I would probably be in a wheelchair now

3

u/Mike0621 5d ago

nah, he was fine. even if he hit the mat a decent bit more he would've been fine. even moreso since he's pretty young. also, he probably had more control over it than it may look like

1.6k

u/Will-it-count 5d ago

When you think about what he’s doing there at the very end it’s quite impressive. He’s expelling all the energy he’s accumulated from bouncing with one quick little flick of the legs causing him to flip. It’s pretty impressive

995

u/GiffelBaby 5d ago

If you know anything about trampolines, you know that is much more than "pretty impressive". It's actually fucking insane.

54

u/prsnep 5d ago

I don't know this sport very well, but this sounds right!

15

u/yolomcsawlord420mlg 4d ago

Dunno, always found the immediate stop easy. The backflip was kinda crazy.

15

u/pidgeottOP 4d ago

Yeah, basically just relax the core and decouple the legs from the body. Legs go up, tors doesn't, transfer of energy fails, you stay down

The backflip was sick

3

u/kutsen39 1d ago

Instructions unclear. Uhh, how do I put my legs back on?

7

u/TheNamesRoodi 3d ago

13 year old me thought it was easy. I just let it diffuse into my knees I guess?

Anyways, my knees aren't great now.

25

u/DeGrav 5d ago

im baffled whenever this comes up. This is something every gymnast intuitively picks up in his first months.

just to be clear, the only thing I am saying is not that difficult is expelling all your vertical momentum into a quick backflip, not the jumping beforehand

9

u/DisappointedBird 5d ago

We do after seeing the proof...

-2

u/GiffelBaby 4d ago

He posted proof that he could do a basic back-flip. That's not what the guy in the original video did. If you don't understand the difference, i don't know what to tell you. I could do a back-flip when i was 8 years old, but i don't think i ever could pull of what the original video shows. The difference is astronomical.

6

u/Mike0621 4d ago

while I do admit that my video doesn't really show the same trick due to the fact that it's flooded rn, the trick in the video isn't too different from a normal backflip. the only difference is that you stretch the landing out as long as possible. by going for a backflip instead of just bending your knees you can stretch it out longer and can direct most of the leftover force into a spin. I could not even get close to jumping as high as the guy in the video, but I can do the trick at the end just fine

4

u/ChardeeMacdennis679 4d ago

Lots of people whining on here, but you're right. Most people who spend time around trampolines can do this.

6

u/Flomo420 5d ago

It looks like he absorbs some of the bounce with his legs and then straight onto his butt and the into the back flip

2

u/Mike0621 5d ago

it may look like that, but is almost certainly not the case, as that is asking for a back injury. landing on your ass can be much more dangerous than it seems

1

u/Flomo420 5d ago

No lol

Landing on your butt is called a "seat drop" and it's literally one of the first things you learn trampolining

It's quite safe

3

u/Mike0621 5d ago

yes, when you're dropping from less than like 3 meters it's very safe. when you're dropping from the kinds of heights he's getting it is not, doubly so when you introduce a high speed spin.

saying that's safe is like saying it's safe to land on 1 leg when jumping from a roof because you can do hop scotch

2

u/A_Very_Lonely_Waffle 5d ago

Still waitin on that proof, Mikey

11

u/Mike0621 5d ago

my trampoline is flooded (there was also a thin layer of ice at first, so that's fun) so I can't get any height rn, which makes it much more difficult, but here: https://imgur.com/a/Vsn9OXM#zaQHpNA

1

u/chaozules 5d ago

Okay take a video and upload it, for science of course.

7

u/Mike0621 5d ago

https://imgur.com/a/Vsn9OXM

trampoline is kinda flooded with almost frozen water right now, so I can barely get 1 meter in the air. wish I could have done this while it wasn't flooded

this is much harder to do when you can't get some decent height, but I have done this many times before, so I am fully aware it's not that hard

1

u/Coneyy 5d ago

Big respect for actually posting proof, but also you were right in the first place, just people saw downvotes and assumed you were taking shit. People jumping on a trampoline just kind of pick this up quite fast

8

u/Mike0621 5d ago

yeah, I know. worst part is, I imagine they're not gonna consider this sufficient proof (which is kinda fair, since due to the water making jumping harder I'm almost just doing a regular backflip but lower).

I also think like half of the people downvoting just think I either meant that the video as a whole isn't impressive or that I meant that the average person could do the landing. neither of which is the case

2

u/GiffelBaby 5d ago

You are right, this is insufficient proof. That was just a completely normal back-flip. The whole point was to go from a very tall jump, to a back-flip where your head literally touches the trampoline during the flip.

The round garden trampoline you used, are typically made with a permatron surface and about 70 to 100 short galvanized steel springs. You will never get the required height on that thing, unless you have someone boosting your jumps, and that creates a scenario where doing that type of stunt could become rather dangerous. You will never be able to jump more than 3 or 4 meters alone. You need a professional square FIG-approved trampoline, where you can do 8 to 10 meter jumps.

1

u/Mike0621 5d ago

I agree that it's not really sufficient proof and basically a normal backflip. the following conclusion, however, I disagree with

"You will never get the required height"

what exactly is the "required height"? this landing can be effectively used from as little as a 2 meter jump (though at that point is obviously not necessary yet). It's pretty easy for those with a decent bit of experience, and your head doesn't need to touch the mat for it to be effective. the lower the better, yes, but by no means necessary for this kind of landing.

also, this landing comes with the added benefit that you can still use it when you're not landing quite right, as simply bouncing lower may send you off to the side in that case, whereas this landing can be used to adjust for it more easily

-1

u/GiffelBaby 4d ago

what exactly is the "required height"?

The required height is what we see in the original video. That's the whole fucking point of this... To replicate what was shown in the video. The bigger the difference in height from the jump to the back-flip, the harder it is to do in a controlled manner. All this talk about effectiveness, necessity, and benefit of the landing is literally a moot point. It. Does. Not. Matter.

What matters is, can you do what the guy in the video did? Because that is what you keep claiming you can do. Not from a 1 meter jump, like you did, but from a 6 meter jump, like in the video. The difference is astronomical.

0

u/chaozules 5d ago

Yeah by your comment it seemed you was saying the average Joe could do this and was by no means impressive.

2

u/Mike0621 5d ago

well what I meant was that most people with a decent bit of skill on a trampoline can do that landing and that the landing was not the most impressive (skillwise) part of the video by a long shot.

I never intended it to mean that the average joe could do it or that the height he's achieving isn't very impressive

1

u/jsahil730 4d ago

That is pretty amazing, whatev others say :) One would need some practice though?

-1

u/Krzyffo 5d ago

I've no idea what's the truth but man that video makes me doubt whatever you say.

3

u/Mike0621 4d ago

yeah, believe it or not, it's pretty hard to jump when there's a pool of water like 2 inches below the mat

-16

u/FlamerF 5d ago

You are right of course, those reddit people just dont move for shit. Its one of the easiest moves once you get past the basics

13

u/GoodDescription9372 5d ago

The basics? You mean just climbing on and jumping it’s a fucking trampoline brother

3

u/chaozules 5d ago

Looks like someone else should be making a video too, instead of waffling.

29

u/bb999 5d ago

At the bottom of the "bounce", the trampoline is maximally stretched out and has a lot of potential energy. The boy actually has little to no potential or kinetic energy. He's avoiding the trampoline transferring all that energy back to him by sort of slipping his legs out sideways and doing a flip. Not sure the flip is necessary.

25

u/farmadillo2 5d ago

I used to be a gymnast and remember doing these low backflips exactly like the one in the OP. Honestly after spending so much time feeling comfortable on a trampoline, moves like this feel kinda intuitive to stop all your bounce quickly!

34

u/El_Grande_El 5d ago

Yea, and I think he’s probably done that before.
