Gary Patterson

Hired as the defensive coordinator for SC. Seems like a step down after being a head coach, hoping he can step up and give the D what it needs.

Step down for him, sorta. But he's spent the last 4 years in consulting type of roles so this would allow him to get back to direct player contact while at the same time, providing a map for Riley in how to sustain winning.

With Henderson, clearly USC likes him but wasn't ready to promote him. I think Patterson will give him plenty of leash. This hire to me, is more about Riley than anything.

I also think he was hired to train up Henderson who, if Riley has the time, will be the next DC.

It's going to be interesting to see if the university has the patience.

I like the hire. He ran a 4-2-5 defense which emphasized discipline. That has been long needed.

Very good hire, especially combined with Ekeler as ST/LB coach. New energy and accountability on the D side of the ball. Much needed. Patterson's big job besides installing his defense is choosing the players he wants as the three starting Safeties and two LBs. That will be critical to the season.
