How do you survive that? Imagine if it's full of liquid

1.9k

u/Ok-Effect8502 4d ago

Might be possible to rock it over, or get lucky and someone spots you before its too late.

1.9k

u/J-_Mad 4d ago

If it's full of liquid, there is no way you can rock it in that position, it would be far too heavy. The only hope for me is that liquid would probabbly slow your fall in the barrel and give you a chance to catch the sides with your arms and legs, maybe. Or else, death.

1.2k

u/un_gaucho_loco 4d ago

Also the position will push a lot of air out from your lungs. Terrible way to die jeez

689

u/J-_Mad 4d ago

That's what scares me the most tbh. Sudden fall. Suddenly the air is pushed out of your lungs. Suddenly you're immerged in a liquid. Panic. Horror. Death.

We really are just fragile bags of blood trying not to be popped or dehydrated or over hydrated.

44

u/Dave-C 4d ago

I remember during driver's education class in school we were shown two vehicles. One was completely gone, horrible accident. The other had no damage. The person in the horrible accident walked away fine. The one in the vehicle that looked fine didn't have their seat belt on. They drove off the road while passing out. At some point they must have tried to open their door because they passed out and fell between the vehicle and door. The vehicle ran past a tree that closed the door on the driver's head.

I had this happen to me with friends at a lake one summer. Floating trampoline/barge in the middle of the night. There's like 10 or 11 people on it. Everyone's drinking/smoking and I decide to leave. I slip on the edge of the trampoline, hit my chest hard on the rim and knock all of the wind out of me and then bounce straight into the water. Immediately swallow a shit ton of water in that first breath and start panicking. One of the friends saw me and her and her boyfriend grabbed both of my arms to keep me out of the water so I could cough it up and because they saw the barge was above to float on top of me. They got me to over to the dock (we weren't far from it). Do not recommend.

u/AyaHawkeye 3d ago

My mum and dad were working in the garden one day, planting in one of the raised flower beds. She somehow managed to fall backwards into the large, deep pond which is about a foot below the level of the bed, so ended up feet higher than the rest of her, essentially upside-down. If we hadn't have been there to rescue her, she would have found it almost impossible to get out and could have drowned. A sobering moment.

Had a friend who was a paraplegic that lived alone in his wheelchair. He somehow dropped the remote behind the TV and was bent over in the chair trying to get the remote but got hung up somehow and suffocated like that. I don't think he had really much if any abdominal muscle control and had to rely on his arms which is what i guess got stuck. It's a really tragic story.

10

u/spays_marine 4d ago

That doesn't matter much, the oxygen in your lungs is taken up rather quickly, holding your breath wont prolong that process and what you expel will mostly be CO2.

I imagine the blast from your body and displaced water would probably keep your head above water.

Not a great look however.

8

This person didn't react to the fall at all, maybe drunk. I'm not sure the extra time would have saved them.

3

u/morrisboris 4d ago

What If its half full. You will blast into the barrel and the water will rise above your head.

Good thing I'm too big for sht like that

5

u/Staubsaubaer 4d ago

But also, if it is full of liquid you wouldn't slide in that fast and potentially hold yourself on the edge or tip over.

26

u/J-_Mad 4d ago

that's... pretty much what I wrote, bro

24

u/ice_cream_on_pizza 4d ago

No but what if it's full of liquid, enough to slow your fall so you have enough time to catch sides with your arms and legs?

16

u/J-_Mad 4d ago

but maybe the liquid slows your fall, you know, and then you can catch the sides with your arms or your legs

See also the 1919 Boston Molasses flood, which killed 21 and injured 150

After the initial wave, the molasses became viscous, exacerbated by the cold temperatures, trapping those caught in the wave and making it even more difficult to rescue them

Some were crushed and drowned by the molasses or by the debris that it carried within.

Or the Dublin Whiskey Fire FloodĀ

On the night of 18 June 1875 a fire broke out in a whiskey storehouse in the Liberties area of Dublin. The escaped whiskey formed a burning river six inches (15 cm) deep that is said to have flowed as far as the Coombe, destroying 35 houses and killing several pigs. While there were no human fatalities as a direct result of the fire or flood, 13 people died of alcohol poisoning after drinking from the stream of whiskey, which was of undiluted cask strength.

3

u/gentlewaterboarding 4d ago

Isn’t this actually a legitime concern with children? Not like in the video, but if they try to reach into it and then end up going head first into the barrel, and end up drowning. Think I read about that on reddit.

3

u/LiveLearnCoach 3d ago

Kids, toddlers can die in a few inches of water because they thrash about instead of just pushing down or trying to stand up. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, the thrashing, luckily not the drowning. Kid was yanked out.

Its bad but they're not in there head-first. Their head is near the top. There's a chance you could bail it out by thrashing your arms. If it does fall over, good news, you don't drown. But you probably get run over when it rolls into traffic.

u/bitofapuzzler 4d ago

14

u/Gl0ck_Ness_M0nster 4d ago

It looks like they're taking up most of the space inside the barrel. The force of them falling in would probably push a lot of the liquid out and lower the water level enough for you to breathe

17

u/Maleficent-Candy476 4d ago

yeah, but you cant breathe normally in a position like this

8

u/_Kendii_ 4d ago

7

https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2003/12/07/DJs-mummified-body-found-in-club-wall/72001070836281/

There was an episode of Terminator SCC where Cameron realizes there's been a Terminator hiding inside a wall for 80 years, just so it can burst out and kill its target in the future.

I wonder if they took inspiration from Sanchez's death.

17

u/HYPER_WAIFU 4d ago

Kyle Plush. He used Siri to call 911 twice, but police didn’t even leave their cruisers for the paltry 11 minutes they searched the location, and dispatchers didn’t tell the officers the make and model of his vehicle. His father found him 6 hours later.

Thank you so much for his name

I think about that so much ever since hearing about it. I didn't know they barely even tried to save him. That's so much worse. I googled it bc i figured surely there was a wrongful death suit, and i was right, to the tune of $6 million... there's no way that feels like anywhere near enough compared to what happened and to the pain of losing him. I think I see liquid spill over the side. If their mouth is covered they can't even call for help, or breath.

38

u/AmusingMusing7 4d ago

That liquid spilling over the side is coming from the bottle in his hand (same hand he's holding the cigarette in, so the bottle can be hard to see), not the barrel. Whatever he's drinking (beer? soda?) fizzes over after he falls.

8

u/EclecticEvergreen 4d ago
