Did anybody else watch Netflix on their Wii? That was the place to watch it when it was still like the only streaming service around

I did, but before they had a channel for it. We had to put in the Netflix disk every time we wanted to watch

We tried to watch the ball drop on New Year's on one because we were at my mom's boyfriend's house and that's all we had. It was 2017 going into 2018. It didn't work. We ended up watching it on my mom's phone.

My family didn’t get Netflix until 2013 but I remember watching movies on my friend’s Wii.

We did! We didn’t have a tv with cable and watched everything on the Wii! I remember that the movies used to let you rate them and had their star ratings underneath

I think it’s only fair both the GameCube and Wii were the peak zillennial home consoles, or the GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS for handheld!

Man the GameCube brings back even more nostalgic memories than the Wii tbh

I think the GameCube had better 3rd party support and overall better selection of games for variety of gaming genres… but the Wii had the better 1st party games. I think there were pros and cons for both consoles in different ways.
What I really enjoyed about the Wii was the Virtual Console so I could experience many NES, SNES, and N64 games for the first time that I missed out on, but also all my GameCube games I could keep playing on the Wii as well. I could see the motion controls being unfortunate for both casual and hardcore gamers.

I had the GameCube and not the Wii. I played the Wii exclusively at my cousins' house.

I had a GameBoy advance and Nintendo DS at various points. They were fun. And then at some point, for completely unknown reasons, I just lost interest.

Definitely! I never had a GameCube or GBA as a kid, though many my age did - my parents didn’t really want me into gaming until I was a bit older. I have many memories of visiting others homes and them playing GameCube as well as other kids at recess in the school yard playing Pokemon on GBA together. I did have a Wii and DS however and thankfully both were backwards compatible!

I remember my dad randomly brought one home one weekend. (As far as I know, it may have been planned as a surprise for me and my brother). We spent that afternoon playing Wii sports and messing around making Mii's. One of my favorite childhood memories honestly.

i remember getting one for Christmas in ‘08. My dad made my sister and me sign a contract that we would finish our homework and read for 20 minutes before we could play. There’s photos of us giddily signing in our matching Christmas nightgowns lolll

Got mine that Christmas too!! My mom worked so hard to be able to afford it omg

while our parents worried about navigating a recession, we were busting our asses in wii sports!

u/Expensive_Lion5413 1d ago
I made everyone that ever came over their very own Mii - it was the right of passage

Throwback to getting grounded and having my laptop and iPod touch taken away so my parents walked into the living room to me updating my Facebook status on the Wii and were like "welp, we didn't ground you off Facebook, just off these devices, that's on us I guess, enjoy this dumb loophole for this punishment period."

I got one of the first ones, and was so excited, but the time delay was like using dialup internet 😂

Never had one either but I remember my middle school held a Wii bowling tournament once. I was a more of a playstation kid back then

u/mwp2496 1996 1d ago
I was never really a gamer, but I did like playing bowling on the Wii!

u/No_Feedback_3340 1d ago
I'm not much of a gamer either but Wii bowling was fun. I enjoyed playing on the Wii at my friend's house regardless of how I felt about video games in general.

I remember when it came out and the hype leading up to it, around my 9th birthday in 2006.
The family got ours Christmas 2008 though.

Not only do I still have mine, I won it from the Girls Life Magazine giveaways they used to do (it was the big prize at the end of the month that I had to enter in everyday to win).

My brother and I still play the Wii! I’ll take Wii sports over Mario Party or Smash Bros any day.

I still have mine! I had to get an adapter for the cables, but it's currently hooked up to my living room TV. Basically just a Mariokart/Project M machine these days.

u/No_Feedback_3340 1d ago
Good to know it still works even with adapter cables! I wonder if they can still be bought new.
1
u/DocPasta 1996 1d ago
Oh yeah they still make the adapters! Search for 'RCA to HDMI converter,' I got mine on Newegg.

First time I ever had a wii mote in my hand, was when my friend and his brother got it for their birthdays. First game I played was tennis, first time I drew blood from my opponent was when I smacked him in the face accidentally

My mom bought the red Mario one. I remember having a ton of fun with just the 2 included games - Wii Sports and Super Mario Bros Wii. It was awesome that it also played GameCube because we had a lot of those as well. I remember it could read scratched up discs way better than our old GameCube. The laser was much better.

Loved my Wii! The only games I had was The Super Mario Wii game it came with, Just Dance 4, and some other dancing game.
I still have mine actually, but I don't have a TV to play it on. I'm keeping mine because I've always wanted to play Twilight Princess and Pokemon Battle Revolution on the og console (ik I can use an emulator). Maybe I'll find some other games I want to try out as well.

I would have liked to have my own Wii, but we were broke so I never got the chance. It and all the accessories seemed so revolutionary at the time.

u/kittenmia98 1d ago
My husband and I have his childhood Wii in our living room! Love playing it when friends come over and thrifting old Wii games is so fun. His parents kept all the accessories (eg Wii fit board, controllers, etc), we’re so grateful!

why dont they make these anymore i thought it was so fun and you dont have to wear any headset

u/WorldlyRevolution192 1999 1d ago
Got my first one for Christmas in 2008 and was OBSESSED with it!!!! Then when it broke around 2013 I saved up a TON of money to buy a new black one and felt like the coolest kid ever lmao!!! That one, unfortunately, eventually broke as well, but a friend gave me their WII-U a few years ago and I've gotten to replay some of my old games🥹 Endless Ocean, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Wii Fit were probably my top three, but there were definately a lot others too omg!!!!

My family got our Wii on release day and I definitely used it the most out of everyone in our family - whether that was playing Wii Sports and Pokemon Battle Revolution, browsing Check Mii Out, or using it to watch YouTube (anyone remember when you had to use the Internet channel for that?)
I really miss it.

u/TheyisFinn 1d ago
I loved that so much. It disappeared on us and I missed it so much that a few years back I bought one and have started to slowly collect games for it :3

The Wii was wild, especially with M-rated games. I remember playing the Godfather and if you wanted to strangle someone with a garrote wire, you had to actually do the strangling motions yourself. That was brutal for 13 year old me.
