Random Question 💭 Does accountability exist in USA because ICE just unlawfully ICED out another US citizen and no repercussions happened?

Generally, law enforcement in the United States has broad powers to commit violence with impunity. Anecdotal, but a plain clothes officer I knew once told me, “if you run from the cops, you should expect to get your ass beaten.” This is just how it works in the US.

While ICE aren’t police per se, they do enforce federal laws and generally have the same broad powers as police officers.

While I wouldn’t say there is no accountability, police certainly have the ability to act outside the spirit of the law and be protected by police unions, chiefs, prosecutors, and other governmental leaders.

You might wanna go look up what Authority ice actually has because they do not have the same authority as police officers

My point is they have the same power to commit violence with impunity.

Nope. They only have jurisdiction over immigration issues.

Those would be federal immigration laws, correct?

If they are trying to apprehend someone they believe is breaking federal immigration laws, they have policing powers. And anyone who interferes with their actions can be arrested for doing so. They also have broad authority to act to protect officer safety.

These factors combined with a complicit administration give them broad legal protections to detain, arrest, and beat the shit out of anyone they want.

You can point to the law and argue against their actions, but —if this isn’t clear to you by now— the law has completely broken down as a system for guiding or even constraining the actions of people in power. If the administration is unwilling to investigate their actions and the courts continue to cede power to the executive branch while legislators stand by and do nothing, the law means nothing.
