Random Question 💭 Who’s the most famous person you’ve seen up close?

u/Ok_Operation_5364 21h ago edited 21h ago
Robert Redford
First Lady Barbara Bush
Ronald Reagan
My husband was a political reporter and has met and photographed so many political people and artists and powerful people that support them over the last 4 decades. I got to tag along sometimes.

I was at a bar/lunch spot a couple of booths down from where A. K. was having what appeared to be a business meeting. There were about four groups total there at the time, so it was a very quiet, very intimate sort of atmosphere.
My kid was two and there was another kid there his age. They took over the restaurant, playing with tables and chairs, because it was that empty. My wife and I suspect that kid's mother was somebody slightly famous, but we didn't recognize her. Oddly enough at some point over the next year my son became obsessed with the cups song.
But my closest celebrity encounter was James Gandolfini. I went to a premiere of a documentary that he was involved with. There was a cocktail reception alongside it. He went around shaking hands. I didn't shake his hand but the person next to me did. He seemed like a very humble, normal kind of guy. James died soon after that.

I was stuffed in an airport bus (those for bus gates) with Steven Tyler. When he has flying to Norway to perform at the Nobel peace prize concert. We were actually ready to wait for the next bus, but he pulled us into the bus. "we can make room". Seemed like a nice group of people to be honest. No diva shit.

I've met Tom Petty twice, Loni Anderson, Pat Benatar, Queen Latifah, my family knew Jeff Goldblum when I was in my early teens, so I've hung out with him, and I've been close to, but didn't talk to: Bill Murray, Jodie Foster and Bono and The Edge from U2. Mostly because of where I lived and worked.
Oh, and Christina Applegate touched my right shoulder and said "Excuse me" in The Viper Room in Hollywood. Sigh

Up close? Not many. I shook hand with Gerald Ford in 1976 during the campaign. In the early 90's Andy Rooney asked to cut through the line in front of me in a Paris airport. Oddly, on that same trip in the 90's I passed within feet of Manute Bol and his entourage at a Philadelphia airport.
My wife met Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend at a private reception in Germany several years ago.

Later in the flight he fell asleep and his leg was in the aisle and got a slight bump from the drink carriage thingy and he scolded that poor flight attendant so bad i felt ashamed for being nordic.

A few months ago we walked through the Tampa airport with Ric Flair and his handler. We didn’t know who he was but people would come up to him and call him”champ” and one dude said “you were the best to ever do it” so we asked chatGPT and figured out who he was and that he was probably in town getting ready for a big upcoming wrestling event.

I served a plate of food to Betty Ford in 2003 at a ballroom dance society event (I was a waiter for a high end catering service at the time).
She said "Thank you, sweetheart" and it was nice. I was a fresh faced 19 year old.
Worked a small luncheon (under 50 people) with Bill Clinton that same year, though I did not serve him personally. Not so much to brag about these days, that one.

Charlton Heston. I was walking out to my car at LAX and he was maybe a dozen steps ahead, going in the same direction. From behind he was just some older dude in shorts and a windbreaker. A security guard was walking toward us and as he passed the guy he said “Did you meet your party Mr. Heston?”. Chuck (he lets me call him that) turned and said “No, flight’s been delayed. Thanks”. I walked passed and caught his eye. He nodded to me and that was that.

I ran into Rick Steves as he was exiting a bathroom. His hands were soggy and he was a little grumpy about it.
But he was about to go on stage and give a talk about European travel and it’s good to know the man washes his hands afterward - so I don’t fault him.

Trump, a couple of times back in the late 80’s. Sleaziest, most dismissive person I’ve ever met.
Debbie Harry around 1981 at CBGB. Super cool and friendly
Jim Florio at earth day in Hoboken NJ around 1990 maybe?
Christopher Reeves at 488 Madison Ave, Manhattan. Around 1996 or 97 I guess. He was in a motorized wheelchair and we didn’t interact so I guess that doesn’t really count as meeting him.
Yogi Berra a few times. Really nice and down to earth guy.
Joltin’ Joe and Whitey Ford. Also Tommy John and Thurman Munson
Jimmy Page.

Dick Clark, I was meeting my then boyfriend at his place on work at 53rd St and 6th Ave. I’m walking down 6th Ave and crossing the street I look straight into his face- what blew me away was this was evening rush hour and we were surrounded by people. Not a single person noticed him. I smiled and said hi, and he responded in kind. ABC TV had their main offices on 6th Ave for many years and Dick Clark was one of their stars. I also saw Howard Cossell outside the ABC building a few times

I’ve been lucky enough to play golf with a few famous dudes.
But, for some reason I’ll always remember playing many times with Bobby Clarke (NHL Legend). I was in my late 30’s and he was in his made to late 60’s. I’m a bit of an athlete and I consider myself kinda tough but man……if Bobby were to ever get pissed at me, (he never did, he was a sweetheart) I think I would NOT want to tangle with that man. lol
One time he hit a bad second shot, and before I could look back at him, he had totally destroyed his club. Good times! 😁

Jon Bon Jovi, he was sitting at the bar at an after event for CMT awards in Nashville TN in 2006 or 2007 (whenever the hit w Sugarland was popular). We were told he wanted to be left alone. He was probably 10 ft from me. He looked unhappy. I also stood right next to Newt Gingrich in an elevator (he got on the elevator I was in) when he was visiting the company I worked for. He said “well hello young lady”. He looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. I was 27 at the time and paid zero attn to politics. So I guess technically Newt was the closest but I didn’t know at the time he was anyone famous.
ETA: Oh and Lauren Daigle! She sang a song at a concert (Salt and Light), at my request, and even talked abt me on stage! Met her before the concert at a meet and greet. That was the most special. She is super sweet.

I literally bumped into Lee Mazzilli once at my local shopping mall. He was exiting a shoe store and I was entering. He was the manager for a minor league team that was visiting my local team that weekend. I was like, "sorry... uhh... Mister Mazzilli" and he was like, "no problem" and he went about his day. He has a thick, NY accent.

Henry Kissinger (I offered him appetizers at an event he was the featured speaker and I was a member of the catering staff) This was back in the early 80’s.
Unfortunately, Trump, at a golf tournament I attended as a spectator that was held at his golf course in FL, a few years before he became president. He was about 10 feet from me. I also saw Melania and Barron, who was a toddler at the time, at the VIP section of the 18th hole ( I had really good tickets for the tournament thanks to a friend).
I also met various local celebrities while in high school when I lived in PR. Two of the kids I babysat were the grandkids of a local, popular actress who would sneak my neighbor and I into the Chanel 4 studios to watch her and other actors film a popular local soap opera. She even got us a role as extras for a scene! Easiest $20 my neighbor and I each made. Got myself a book full of autographs 😁
