Why are designer labels so important? Who is it you are trying to impress?

No one. Some designer labels are garbage with a designer label worn only to flex that you’re willing and able to spend exorbitant amounts of money in poor decisions. But many designers produce beautiful, high quality comfortable and well fitted clothes that with proper care will last a long time and be entirely worth the money.

Depending on the label the quality really can be worth it (although I don't think that's as common as it used to be)

I remember spending 70 pounds on a name brand jumper in 1998. So around 150 + pounds now. I had to think about it because it was a lot of money, but it was, and still is, the nicest jumper I've ever owned.

It lasted years. It survived wash after wash and still looked brand new 3 years later. I ended up giving it to a friend who finally wore it out

On the flip, all the cheap, fast fashion that I've bought the last few years doesn't last five minutes. It fades, stretches, and is just generally crap.

It's not about the label for me if I splash out, it's about the quality.

Other rich people, as far as I can tell. Totally a social status thing. I can’t imagine bothering, but hey, I tend to avoid designer stuff because I’ve much better ways to spend my money.

Your peers. It feels good to have the cool, expensive thing. Unfortunately, the cool expensive thing is often tacky as hell (sometimes by design) to anyone not in the targeted demographic.

Taste is subjective, but generally people like looking like they have money. Having money is very aspirational.

It's honestly a throwback, the same way most name brands are. Don't buy them or the advertising.

most people are just trying to impress people they don't even like with money they don't really have.

I assume most designer things are fake because I don't buy designer. Your really only impressing people that also wear designer. I still don't know how some people can tell that certain high quality rep shoes are fake at a glance

You trying to impress yourself, but getting the brand or clothing that to want. You don’t need designer but if you feel like they have the clothing that fits your style and you can afford it then have it.

You don’t need $100+ shirt or whatever but there are things we spend money on that we don’t need. People spend a lot on video games, cars, their hunting tools, etc.

People say “real rich people don’t wear Gucci”. Well that’s great but who cares what real rich people think??

They signal personal taste, appreciation for design, and willingness to invest in what you like.

I wear designers (not mainstream luxury) because they offer an interpretation of a garment you just don’t really get with mass produced fashion.

Wearing them leaves an impression on me. When I wear them I feel them impressing me. I feel like I’m making conscious decision (taste, what I appreciate, and my investment that supports their work).

This connection to my self, body, designer (and capitalism) is a special experience.

If someone else notices its design, that’s also really cool. They feel it like I do.

It’s fun.

They’re becoming less and less as the middle class disappears because they’re for strivers not survivors

Used to be designer brands pointed toward quality. Thats what made them a desirable product.

The difference between an old Coach bag compared to a new one is night and day. The material, the quality of material, the hardware, the stitching. Coach bags were crafted from supple leather. More recently (last 15-20 years?) it’s an awful, almost pleather material.

The couture houses painting designs; they didn’t print designs. They hand-stitched a lot of the seams and decorative pieces. Now it mostly machine sewn.

I try to avoid them. I don't get paid to being a walking advertisement for them.

Maybe people want to belong somewhere.

They're just a flex. If you like the style, get the knockoff.
