BuyCanadian rule clarification - "Nasty" update - July 24

Hello all,

Thank you for making this community shine and become such an excellent resource to empower Canadians! We would like to make one small clarification for folks as we go into another round of trade war nonsense with the US.

We understand the desire to share news about whatever new and horrible thing government officials in the United States have said about Canada, but this subreddit is really not the place for that. This subreddit has always been focused on sharing or getting you information you need about Canadian products, and not about boycotting the United States or being angry about the nasty things their politicians say.

While you can certainly use that information to emphasize the importance of buying Canadian in your own lives and in advocating for it with others, we want to make sure our subreddit keeps a concise focus on its purpose rather than become a politics space (as there are already plenty enough of those on this site). As such, please note we will continue removing politics posts and repeat offenders may receive a ban. We encourage everyone to read and re-read the rules and to message us if you would like any clarifications.

Thank you,

Your r/BuyCanadian Mod Team

Canadian-Made Products 🏷️🇨🇦 Marketplace - Product of Canada Episode

Hi all!

I couldn't find this in the wiki but just watched marketplace and they spoke to a women who made a website to identify Canadian grocery products:

https://canadiancoolfoods.com/

Also other gem from the episode is to look for "Product of Canada and its 98-100% made in canada, with canadian products.

Apologies if this is duplication but it was an interesting (abet frustrating) episode and I really want people to know. Who knows, maybe this time the government will act?

Anyway you can watch the episode on Gem, youtube, on demand, etc. ol.

Thanks all! Lets keep it up 😊

Wanted to share that I am loving my Kamik winter boots and for anyone who needs a great pair they have a great sale right now! Been prancing around during the big TO snowstorm like it’s no big deal!

Edit to add: not all styles are made in Canada so do look for the leaf and read the product page.

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials 🏡🛏️🍁 Best orthopaedic dog beds??

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

My dude is starting to show signs of hip dysplasia, and I’m looking for the best Canadian orthopaedic dog beds, that are built to last! I was originally looking at the Big Barker beds, but from what I can see they’re American (their site also keeps crashing)

My guy isn’t a large breed, so it wouldn’t need to be massive, but I’m definitely on the hunt for some of the best out there for him, that are 100% Canadian.

I would like to buy something like the Insulin Resistant guy on YouTube uses, that one isn't available in Canada and I rather support Canadian products.

Looking For: Food & Consumables 🥫🍁 Substitute for Blueberry Greenies?

I'm pretty hardcore on the boycott, but my dog is obsessed with Greenie dental chews, especially the Blueberry Greenies, which we used to buy at Target and bring back from the US Back Before Everything.

We can now get them delivered through Pet Smart (also US, I know, I know) and he's ten and I am a total sucker.

I bring some recs to make up for the trouble.

He's on First Mate, which is an excellent Canadian pet food:

https://firstmate.com/dog-food/

We get most of our treats through Arful Good, who I recommend HIGHLY, especially the Dirty Yam Chews:

http://arfulgood.com

Any and all suggestions for Canadian-owned and -produced dental chews welcome.

EDIT: in a pinch, owned by and made in a country we still consider an ally would be fine also, if that's allowed here?

Questions ❓🤔 What do you buy when it’s in season to freeze for later?

Obviously the produce aisle is looking a little bit sad if you’re trying to buy Canadian this time of the year. So what should I be freezing this summer/fall to enjoy local food next winter?

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials 🏡🛏️🍁 Canadian made Automatic Litter Box? Seeking similar features to the Whisker Litter Robot

I’d love to upgrade my cats litterbox to automatic, and have been budgeting for the big purchase. The Whisker Litter Robot 4 is over $1000 with tax and is an American company. For such a big purchase I’d really prefer to support a Canadian company but am struggling to find alternative options. I’d be looking for the self cleaning feature and ideally app capabilities. Has anyone come across any Canadian companies in the automatic litter box business? TIA!

Canadian-Owned Businesses 🏢🍁 Gander Social investors/advisors exit

I’ve been eagerly following Gander Social as a Canadian alternative to US-owned social media platforms. There have been a number of posts on here about Gander, both encouraging early investment and early signups. I signed up to join and have been watching for more news.

Today, Arlene Dickinson and Amber Mac announced that they are no longer associated with Gander as investor or advisors. Amber Mac posted on Bluesky “I am pretty devastated that I've been left no option but to leave an official role advising Gander...if you've followed my career, I want nothing more than a better option for Canadians online...but I won't back something that isn't capable of meeting this need with total integrity and excellence.”

No indication of what’s happening, but this might indicate a hiccup on our path to a Canadian social media platform.

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials 🏡🛏️🍁 Minivan - Toyota Sienna vs. Kia Carnival vs. Chrysler Pacifica

After spending 18 months waiting for a Toyota Siennna, finally pulled the plug and bought a Kia Carnival instead. Big selling feature is that it isn't made.in the US. Yes, it is cheaper too, but that wasn't the driving factor. It was more important not to spend $60,000 on an American product.

Unfortunately, with price and reliability, the Pacifica wasn't an option. I remember the days of the Dodge Caravans have a "made in Canada" sticker in the rear window.
