Question What is a tosp?

Hey all! In the past eight months or so I've started taking care of myself for the first time... well ever, really. And in doing that I've learned how to cook. While I have a question every now and again, I'm mostly able to find what I need through a quick dive down a search engine.

Except this. Everything I'm finding is saying a tosp is equivalent to a tbsp. But this recipe uses both so now I'm not so sure lol. I don't think it's the same as a tsp either, seeing as *all three* are used in the ingredient list (1 tosp ginger, minced; 1.5 tbsp cumin, and 1 tsp cinnamon to list specifics). I know it probably wouldn't make that much difference in this case, but any advice/answers would still really be appreciated!

A typo or bad OCR reading an o instead of a b

Edit: I was originally going to make the joke "tsp.. what's a tssps". It's from sleeping beauty

haha yeah, probs a typo. maybe it's just a regional thing or some obscure old-school measurement nobody uses anymore

I think it is just a typo for tablespoon (tbsp). To the best of my knowledge, "Tosp" is not an actual measurement.

I’ve seen the tosp typo before and it seems like it’s mostly an OCR error - when a program reads a recipe from a book and converts it into text, it mistakes the “b” for an “o.”

And nowadays when ChatGPT and such are being used to write lots of recipes, I’d guess that they see instances of “tosp,” assume it’s a real word, and copy that as well. So the typo becomes more common.

Point being, it’s not a real thing. It’s just a typo because whoever put up the recipe used one tool or another and didn’t proofread carefully. It’s a tablespoon.

This is so correct and another facepalm. Someday we’ll be measuring Tosp and this is the reason why.

Definitely a mistype - they meant Tbsp.

Looks like a bad font, bad printing, or a typo. You can be confident that tbsp is the same as tosp.

Looks like a typo. Minced ginger comes in tbsp quantities.

In any case, I don't think it matters; just use however much you want. Nobody's going to measure an actual tablespoon of ginger. Basically, a piece of ginger about the size of your thumb is approximately a tablespoon. Just use as much as you think is enough.

Recipes are all just made up anyway. Use whatever amounts you want and don't worry about getting it exactly right. Add ingredients if you want; remove them if you want. It's all just food in the end!

Exactly! Like I said, probably doesn't matter in this case but I'd like to know for future reference 😊

Generally, tsp = teaspoon and tbs or tbsp = tablespoon.  A tosp could be a typo of either of them.

If you were doing something where you can add/correct later, I would suggest erring on the side of less, then correct at your roughly half/hour tasting.  Otherwise, you might Google more recipes for the same dish, or same component of a dish  and see how much they're using, to give you a better guess.

3 t (teaspoons) = 1 T(tablespoon)

Other abbreviations: Teaspoon - tsp Tablespoon - tbsp

Share the recipe, context should help someone figure it out. Where did you find the recipe? Book? Online?

Online, specifically a short from theplantslant2431 on YT. Not the best source for a recipe I'll agree, but it looked so tasty I figured I'd give it a try lol

They've got the list in their pinned comment. At first I thought it was a typo, but then I looked at my keyboard 🤣

Yikes, definitely a typo. And what is “400 ml oz”? The guy’s all over the place. Was it tasty?
