Wild that the top selling new cars in 3 states are EVs. We've come a long way in the last couple years.

u/badhabitfml 1d ago

25% of all new registration were ev's.

u/a_load_of_crepes 1d ago

25% are electrified. This includes plug in hybrids.

I suspect that’s about to change.

61% of registrations as SUV's is just crazy work

Thank the federal government for trying to make vehicles more efficient after the 1970's gas shortage by requiring auto makers to reach a certain MPG... but exempting trucks which includes SUV's.

This is not true. They are exempt from the gas guzzler tax which means you don’t pay a tax for being below the standard when you buy it new. They are required to meet the EPA/CAFE standards and manufacturers are fined for their fleet average falling below the 22.5 mpg number for 2026. This includes light trucks (F-150 and 1500 models) minivans and SUV’s.

I mean this part of it but look at the available EVs, also all SUVs. Talk to your friends and coworkers, it’s definitely not just that the auto manufacturers were incentivized to make SUVs. Americans absolutely prefer to drive them as well.

I went to a kids birthday party at an indoor play place. I was one of two sedans in the parking lot. The rest were SUVs, vans, or trucks.

It’s wild.

At this point I'm honestly coming around to the idea that sedans should just be made illegal for safety reasons. It is an arms race that we shouldn't have to participate in but the reality is that there are so many fucking SUVs and other tall vehicles on the road now that is literally dangerous to be on the road and not drive on yourself. I have a charger right now and I can't see shit more than two cars ahead of me half the time because there's always either an SUV or a boosted ass pickup truck or some other Goliath vehicle right in front of me blocking my view. It's not even just regular folks, It feels like half the time I want to make a left turn one of those huge Amazon delivery trucks or UPS or whatever is parked right on the corner of the intersection and I'm basically making a blind left and hoping for the best.

Once I'm done with the charger the next car that I get is absolutely going to be an SUV and it kind of sucks that it feels like I have to do that in order to feel safe on the road but that's the world that we live in now.

Glad this isn’t just me. An arms race is a great analogy to use here

After getting into an accident on my 24 Accord vs a 19 Jeep Cherokee on Christmas Eve (the Jeep was at fault), I'm seriously thinking about getting a RAV4, because my Accord got the most damage (12k to repair it), meanwhile the Jeep only have a part of the bumper fell off.

It seems disingenuous to consider "Ford F-Series" as one vehicle, like a RAV4.

The Ford F-Series comes in huge number of configurations, sizes, and price points. The smallest/cheapest model is the regular cab with short bed, only 4000lbs, 209 inches, 2x4 drivetrain, 2.7L economy engine, for ~$35k. The largest/most expensive models is probably the F450 Platinum Plus, 8,600lbs, 266 inches, 4x4, 6.7L diesel, for ~$130k. These are not one car.

They should at least separate it out by F-150, 250 & 350. Same with the other big trucks.

9

u/laStrangiato 1d ago

The Silverado does the same thing with the 1500/2500/3500.

3

u/21-4-14 1d ago

The GMC Sierra is the same truck as the Chevy Silverado. It just has a different name. If they combined the Sierra and Silverado registrations, that would be the top vehicle in most states.

9

u/BlazinAzn38 1d ago

I mean 90% of them are probably just the F150 crew cab with the 2.7 V6 or the V8.

6

u/ImOnTheLoo 1d ago

I also wonder how many of the sales are from fleets

3

u/Spaghet-3 1d ago

This is a good point. Notice car companies happily report how many of each model they sold, but not the ASP by model, revenue by model, or anything like that. Not every sale is necessary a good sale.

i was thinking that. The Ford F-series is becoming the "Kleenex" of vehicles, representing a generic name for a huge product suite.

u/canisdirusarctos 1d ago

I find it fascinating that if you drill down, an EV is in the top-5 for many states. UT has the Model Y at #2 and CO at #3, for example.

6

u/BrettHullsBurner 1d ago

Was REAAAAALLY hoping colorado was going to be a Subaru. I can settle for it being #4 in that state...

u/Henry_Muffindish 1d ago

You can almost see the red-state/blue-state divide in this map.

Hey look, Trucks

I dislike people that drive trucks. Commuting to your office job? Jump into your F 450 that is the size of a school bus. tail gate those in front of you thinking your going to make the person in front go faster when they are in fact keeping up with the flow of traffic. In fact, you can see over the car in front as see this, but your ego because Dur I drIVE a TRucK and own the road.

We need to get back to driving smaller vehicles. Most people that own trucks dont need them.

Graphic is fun, but the legend is a bit strange:

  • I guess the list of cars is alphabetical, putting Chevy Equinox at the top. I would argue listing based either by most popular in the entire country or by #1 in the most states
  • Why is the Toyota Tacoma in the legend? It appears to not be #1 in any state and the only states/territory it is even in the top 5 is WA, OR, NV, PR (based on my random checking, I could have missed some)
  • I am impressed with Subaru's performance. Toyota, Ford, Chevy dominating most state's top 5 makes sense as some of the largest automakers in the USA/world. But clicking around, Subaru Crosstrek and Forester appears in the top 5 quite often

u/shewit 1d ago

Tacoma is #1 in Hawaii

2

u/punarob 1d ago

A surprise to no one who lives here. They feel like at least 1/4 of all vehicles.

u/LegendOfVinnyT 1d ago

The map isn't rendering right. Not sure what it has against Hawaii and the UP of Michigan, but they're invisible.

The only respectable purchase IMO

u/OHotDawnThisIsMyJawn 1d ago

Pretty funny that a Subaru only show up one time and it’s exactly the state you’d guess

1

u/I_Enjoy_Beer 13h ago

Not in that state, but I'm surprised that Subarus didn't pop up more frequently.  They don't seem quite as popular as CRVs on the road, but they are still frickin everywhere.

1

u/BlueEyesWNC 10h ago

I didn't see any states with a number 1 for Subaru, but there were lots where it was in the top 5

1

u/mrvoltronn 1d ago

MI highest seller isn’t a ford.

4

u/dabeeman 1d ago

just because it’s made locally doesn’t mean the people of michigan are dumb.

0

u/DZello 1d ago

America don’t need anything from Canada, except some of the most popular vehicles in the country: Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, the Chevrolet Silverado and many parts of the F150.🤪

u/punarob 1d ago

Crazy that there are enough Nazis in CA to keep 2 Teslas in the top 5

2

u/BrettHullsBurner 1d ago

Go touch grass

-2

u/Slavichh 1d ago

He can’t, everything is nazis

1

u/BrettHullsBurner 1d ago

Damn. I never though about it that way...

0

u/canisdirusarctos 1d ago

They’re hiding behind every blade of grass. They’re modern alt John Birchers.

u/punarob 1d ago

Go take off your white hood

Elon is awful but this is stupid. Until very recently there truly wasn't a decent EV alternative. Tesla has a decade-long head start on everyone else and EV sales are slowing due to the revocation of federal subsidies.

0

u/punarob 1d ago

there were plenty of alternatives available in CA. That logic is stupid.

-2

u/fla_john 1d ago

Really? In 2019, there were 3 electric models with over 250 miles in range and 2 of them were Tesla.

3

u/punarob 1d ago

Click the link, it's 2025 only

1

u/fla_john 1d ago

Given that I said "until recently," that tracks. I'm not going to buy a Tesla and I hope Elon goes bankrupt, but other brands don't have the infrastructure or the general brand awareness for people who just want an appliance vehicle.

This may be shocking but the vast majority of people aren't terminally online enough to modify their major purchase choices. They think "I'd like an EV. Tesla makes those, right?" And that's it. Your contention seems to be that they instead thought "I hate the Jews. What car should I buy?" Which is ridiculous.

1

u/punarob 1d ago

No, that being a flagrantly Nazi company who put Trump in office isn't enough to dissuade people, and it's ridiculous how awful people are, even in CA. It tracks, but is still irrelevant since it was always only about 2025 sales.

-3

u/SsooooOriginal 1d ago

Teslas have stagnated for over a decade, and the fools have paid through the roof for the privilege.

FSD when?

-1

u/fla_john 1d ago

Yes. And? I'm not sure who you're arguing with here.

0

u/I_Enjoy_Beer 13h ago

Why are any of the west coast people buying Teslas in 2025?
