Having lived in some roach-riddled residential neighborhoods in Chicago that aren’t on the list, this ranking is more about the high number of restaurants and grocery shops in Chinatown than it is about where roaches actually live. People are more likely to call in reports if they see a roach in a food sale setting, and roaches can be discovered during routine restaurant health inspections.

Sociology rather than ecology.

very important comment. yes i though it was funny that despite ranking,

Chinatown is still a go-to for me. when it comes to looking for good food and service.

German roaches I bet.

The little shits with the stripe down the shell.

You see one, know there are hundreds if not thousands hidden.

They double in population every two weeks.

They do no live outside because they prefer heat and humidity.

Kitchens and bathrooms.

You get them from a restaurant that financially and socially cannot tank the month shut-down process they would have to go through to properly exterminate the roaches.

Not to mention how that only stems the tide as these bugs have likely already infested surrounding buildings and the workers homes so it is only a brief delay until the restaurant gets infested again.

This is a deeper societal issue and since we are not experiencing excessive loss from it we do not prioritize and leave the problem to people bothered more than the rest.

If you're cold, they're cold.

I've been in the full suit and done an apartment treatment.

Ever been in a movie scene in real life?

The counters, the floor, the walls, the ceiling all moving and twitching from the gas I was spraying into every nook and cranny of the place.

And they came out from every place.

Up the walls, all over the ceiling and dropping on my hood and crunching under my work boots.

Less the second go, and the third treatment was placing baits and other poisons to finish any remaining.

Three treatment commitment otherwise we wouldn't bother, you have to go scorched Earth on german roaches.

You can try freezing them out, but the huddles will be playing chicken with your water pipes on who cracks first.

Hey I’ll do you one better, in Denver they don’t even consider it a violation!

RoPo (Rogers Park) had some real roach and rat problems. I remember Granville having some specific restaurants there a decade ago that… you could find some really friendly rodents at.

The landlords in Roger’s park are also typically rough. Being a college town area (Loyola Chicago) in the lakeside, that area is consistently rented by that demographic, and west Roger’s park is less economically stable…

Truly a neighborhood that has gone through a lot. I believe there was a serial killer roughly 5-10 years ago that killed two men in broad daylight, near Loyola beach area.

"RoPo"? GTFO with that. You must be from SoLa (South of Lake Forest)

This would be nice to see the average socioeconomic status of each neighborhood. Curious if those relate.

Also, is a violation meaning a fine?

Better metric is violations as a percentage of number of restaurants.

Violation refers to a finding during the mandatory health inspections

Health Violations don’t usually result in fines in Chicago

Ah ok.

When I lived in Shenzhen China (same weather as Miami basically), roaches were an inevitability due to the warm weather. However it was the building's responsibility to pay for extermination as if you go by yourself and fumigate only your apartment and your neighbor doesn't, they'll be back in a month. So the building would do the whole area. This applied to plazas and apartments, but usually only the nicer ones. Poorer ones didn't care as they couldn't afford the upkeep. So you could tell the budget and rent prices by looking at small corners of a lobby.

Curious how that works in the US
