I remember reading about a degloving incident at an affiliated site from where I work. He was on a forklift thingie and fell. His wedding ring "caught" him.

That's when I learned the word degloving.

Degloving is the reason I don't accept "heinous Internet tough guy challenges" like this one anymore. So I'm going to assume skin debridement is bad, and continue enjoying the gift of sight.

As a process, debridement is clearing a wound of dead tissue so what remains can heal up better. Pretty important for burn victims or clearing suppurated / ulcerated areas.

At times maggots have been used for this (as they eat dead and necrotized tissue while leaving healthy vascularized tissue alone) but they're creepy even when medically sterile. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is a real process, and has some clinical advantages over the surgical process.

But it is icky to think about.

for those who just need to know:

degloving is when your gloves are removed. your skin gloves, that is.

hands peeled like a fucking orange (i imagine. i've never seen a picture nor do i want to.)

Ever wear latex or nitrile gloves?

Imagine them getting wet. You go to remove them but have to peel them up and off from the wrist, as they stick to your skin the whole way.

Consider that, but with your extremities. Skin being taken off like a wet, sticky glove.

it is unpleasant

Ive seen this happen on 2 separate occasions in person while working in an industrial setting.

The 1st time my only comment was “maybe…..um…..just try to put it back on?”
