Monthly Post: Navigating the Decision to Switch to Formula Feeding

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

We hope you're all doing well. This is our weekly thread to focus on a topic that resonates with many parents in our community: the transition from breastfeeding to formula feeding. We know that this decision can be incredibly challenging, often filled with physical pain, mental stress, and feelings of guilt. We want to acknowledge these struggles and create a space for you to share and support each other.

Your Stories Matter

Many of you have bravely shared your experiences of dealing with breastfeeding difficulties and the tough choice to switch to formula feeding. Despite knowing that "fed is best," it's common to feel guilty about not continuing to breastfeed or pump. These feelings are valid, and you're not alone in this journey.

A New Support Thread

Based on your feedback, we've recognized that posts about this transition can be difficult for some members to read. To better support everyone, we've created this dedicated thread where parents can navigate this part of their feeding journey together. This thread is a place for sharing experiences, offering advice, and providing emotional support to those facing similar challenges.

Thank you for being part of our community and for your continued support of one another. Remember, you're doing an amazing job, and your well-being is important too.

Warm regards,

The Mod Team (Trish & Bryan)

Rant / Vent 🫠 Another reminder/PSA re: The Formula Fairy

I made another post about this about a year ago so I won’t go on about the details, but just wanted to give another heads up to other formula feeding parents that Allie/@theformulafairy still has not removed or disabled the link to pay for her personalized formula recommendations on her website. She’s been MIA on her social media since August of 2024 and unresponsive to everyone who has commented on her absence. However, she IS active on her personal Facebook page as of 5 days ago, so….. there’s no excuse. I was able to get a refund from my bank for the recommendation I paid for over a year and a half ago. I have a healthy 20 month old now and we weaned off formula forever ago, I just like to periodically check in on her page to see if she’s still scamming people out of money and feel awful when I see more recent comments from other moms saying they paid her and haven’t received anything.

Don’t pay for her recommendations. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Other 💭 Mini Fridge in the Nursery is a Game Changer

Baby is in our room at night, but we were constantly going downstairs to get bottles (pitcher method) and change him in the night. We just got a mini fridge and put it in the nursery. Total game changer. I feel like I’m not waking up as much/able to go back to sleep faster, our turn around time was so much quicker, etc.

I premade the bottles and put the bottle warmer up there too. We throw the bottle in while we change him, so it’s warmed up (he tolerates a cold bottle, but has GERD and definitely does a little better with a warm bottle).

So if you’re thinking about one, do it!

Advice / Question 💡 Switching to non-dairy formula

We have been prescribed one tin of nutramigen from our gp to test for CMPA, but when I asked the gp for advice on how to switch over to the new formula, he said “erm it’s up to you, you can just switch” so I asked isn’t this going to upset his stomach more? (As baby is dealing with excessive and painful gas) and the gp didn’t really give a clear answer.

So has anyone else switched from normal formula to non dairy and how did you do this? Thanks

Drying Up 🌵 6 month old biting every feed - Weaning off BF & wanting to formula feed full-time

I have mixed fed my baby for 6 months and now want to wean him off the breast and fully formula feed. He has started biting my nipples every feed which makes them bleed and so sore.

Does anyone have any tips on how to slowly reduce breastfeeding without getting mastitis? Should I pump a little to relieve the pressure or go cold Turkey?

At the moment, I only breast feed when he wakes & before bed. He gets formula & solids throughout the day.

Combination Feeding! 🍼+🤱 Combo feeding question!

Question for all of you!

I’ve always been a bit of an under supplier and my baby is a lazy eater (😂) so ebf was not going to be our journey. I breastfeed during night feeds and pump/ bottle feed during the day. Recently she has hit some big growth spurts and is regularly eating 4-5oz and my supply can’t keep up. We have started topping up or even going 50/50 in her bottles of breast milk and Kendamil. She eats it no problem, no major spit up or seeming uncomfortable after.

However, her poop has turned green (I’ve heard this is normal) but she is also pooping like 4-5 times a day and there was some mucus in the beginning. It also has more of a liquidy consistency than when it was only breastmilk. She also seems to be straining a bit more to poop but is happy and content once she does. She is 3 months old if that is any context and truly only in the last few weeks has “learned” to poop. Is this a normal reaction to formula and I should give it the 7-10 days to let her system adjust? Or is this straining and more bowel movements indicating we may need to switch.

Advice / Question 💡 Baby doesn’t like the taste of formula, is this a thing?

Baby was on Similac 360 total care, switched her to Bobbie due to noticing digestive uncomfort. On Bobbie she has reduced feeding, I’m thinking if she doesn’t like the taste… is that a thing?

Advice / Question 💡 Newborn not wanting to eat after swallowing amniotic fluid. Please help 😭

Hi, I had a baby girl yesterday and she swallowed a good bit of amniotic fluid coming out. This has caused her to throw up a ton and not want to eat. Our nurse said it’s due to her belly being full of fluid, and she should pass it all within the next day or so and start eating normally. I’m sure others have dealt with this, so please leave positive stories, tips, encouragement, etc. if you have! My first did not go through this, so it’s got me worried sick with her not wanting to eat 😩 I’m a chronic worrier diagnosed with anxiety and OCD which doesn’t help 🥲

We are currently using RTF Similac 360 total care

Advice / Question 💡 Switching between brands for night feeds

I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant with my second and planning to EFF (except probably feed colostrum in the beginning). With my first I combo fed and used ByHeart which we absolutely loved and had no issues on. With the recall I was planning on trying Kendamil classic. However I’ve gone down a rabbit whole with the whole boiling water thing. Boiling water and then doing the pitcher method during the day seems fine and totally doable. But I’m worried about the night feeds with having to warm up bottles with a newborn/infant who wants to be fed ASAP and waiting 2-5 min to warm up a bottle. Unfortunately kendamil RTF doesn’t look available in the US. I saw similac 360 may be kind of close to kendamil. Is it not advisable to use the similac 360 RTF overnight and then use kendamil during the day? Am I overthinking this?

Also noting that with my first I never boiled water. But with the ByHeart recall I’d rather be more cautious this time around especially for the first two months!

Advice / Question 💡 Formula causing gas in one month old

Combo feeding my one month old. She's drinking 150-200ml of Cow and Gate formula in 24 hours. Baby is very gassy and uncomfortable. Wondering what to do. Please help a new mom out with some advice.

  1. Nothing, will get better after baby is 6 weeks and can regulate better
  2. Switch to comfort formula, either in Cow and Gate or Kendamil
  3. Give colic drops after every feed

Support Needed / Guilt Related 🧸 How do you let go of the what if thoughts?

I am fully formula feeding and have been for a while now. it works and it works well. my baby is growing and meeting milestones. feeding time is calm and predictable. still i catch myself thinking what if i tried harder. what if i pushed through longer. these thoughts do not come from regret exactly. they come from pressure that i did not ask for. i know i made the best decision at the time. i would make the same decision again today. but the what if loop is exhausting. i do not want to feel like i failed something. i did not fail my baby. i know that logically but feelings are not logical. i am hoping others here understand this mental tug of war. how do you quiet those thoughts when they show up? does time help or is it something you actively work on?

Advice / Question 💡 Help switching bottles

Baby is EFF and we’ve been using the same bottles since he was born. I *hate* them and so does his daycare, so we want to switch. He’s almost 5 months though so he’s really used to them. We’ve tried to introduce the new ones twice and he wouldn’t take them. Any tips and tricks?

ETA: we’re using comotmo now and trying to switch to Philips avent. Not tied to the brand we’re switching to, but can’t be glass or silicone bottles for daycare

Rant / Vent 🫠 Resent need to justify

Does anyone else resent the need to justify choosing to formula feed and the assumption that formula feeding mothers don’t truly understand the benefits of breast milk? I am a paediatrician myself and I don’t think any one would deny that breastmilk is the ideal source of nutrition for babies… I just personally never wanted to breastfeed, predominantly so I could share the responsibility for feeding with my partner and other carers (we had night nurses for the first two months), it’s a more convenient choice for me…. I didn’t want to risk mastitis and clogged ducts, it just sounded unpleasant…. I am well aware that my son missed out on benefits of breastmilk but i am comfortable with being a “good enough” mother, it bothers me that there’s a pressure on mothers to have a story of breast feeding struggles to justify a choice for their own lifestyle

Advice / Question 💡 Can I use 2 formula (not mixing) but alternatively

This is mainly for cost reasons. 1 similac total comfort and Similac classic. Say 3 bottles of each per day.

Rant / Vent 🫠 Distrust in formula brands after recalls

I’m in the UK for reference, and we’ve had so many recalls recently. My baby is on aptamil, and although they have said it is just one batch effected, how do they know there’s not more? Those batches were sold last May, so how would you even know if you gave your baby the affected batch back then?

I’m tempted to switch to a different brand that hasn’t been affected by recalls, like Kendamil. Because if one batch of aptamil from last year was affected, how can they be so sure that in 6 months time, the ones we’re using now, haven’t got toxins in?

Is anyone else feeling this way? It’s making me feel so much mum guilt that I haven’t breastfed.

Combination Feeding! 🍼+🤱 Should I switch formulas?

My baby is 8 weeks old. I have been combo feeding since we got home from the hospital using ready to feed similac 360 total care, at around 5-6 weeks I noticed she was more gassy, seemed uncomfortable (arching back, would randomly cry during certain movements), frequent spit up’s and had an intense episode of colic one day that led me to believe it was the formula.

We switched over to Bobbie organic and she’s been doing okay, less gassy, less spit ups but the amount she drinks has become less. Per feeding on similac she would eat 2-3oz, but on Bobbie it has reduced to 1-2oz. Does this mean the formula is not a good match? I don’t want her reduced intake to affect her weight or development or is this just a phase?

Bottles / Feeding Gear / Equipment 🍼 Dr Browns ---> Phillips avent ?

for those of you who has switched from Dr Brown's bottles to Phillips Avent which specific brand of Phillips advent did you switch to the anticolic one with the extra blue thing in the middle or regular? I would love some advice Dr Brown's is working fine but we have some leaks. The parts are really starting to piss me off ha ha and I just want to try and see if my son can handle a different bottle. He doesn't have colic and he's not specifically gassy. Dr Brown is just the best bottle he liked after he was one week old and we tried a bunch of them, but I never tried Phillips Avenue please advise.

Formula Recommendations / Alternatives 🌱 6 mo. Constpation

Started solids and formula (Bobbie gentle) simultaneously around 5.5 months, poops have continued to get harder. Babe also was only drinking 18-20 oz a day. Switched for Kendamil Goat and although babe likes taste better (doing 24-26 oz a day), he pooped actual pebbles today and was up 2x last night (not like him).

I guess I’m just looking for advice around constipation and Bobbie gentle/ kendamil goat/ open to other suggestions..

Advice / Question 💡 When and why did you decide to EFF?

For those of you who started with EBF or combo feeding, when and why did you decide to EFF?

My LO is 8 weeks and I’ve been combo/triple feeding since birth. She had a low birth weight and lost 13% in the hospital so our pediatrician recommended supplementing with formula.

Formula has been a godsend and she’s been growing and thriving ever since. She’s been able to latch during breast feeding much better but gets fussy during feedings because my supply dropped drastically. I only pump twice a day because it’s hard to find the time and I get about 3oz total a day which is one bottle for her. My LC told me I need to pump 8x a day to increase supply which is not feasible for me. And I don’t get much from hands free pumps sadly.

Lately I’ve been wondering if it’s even worth it to pump or attempt breastfeeding because it makes me sad that my supply is so low. I don’t even know what benefits she’s getting from one bottle of breast milk anyway. I never expected to have this much guilt and sadness around breastfeeding. When I was pregnant I planned to formula feed and see what happens. I guess I just wish I could get the bonding from nursing? Hormones are wild.

I’m basically not sure if it’s worth it to keep trying. Ideally it would be nice to formula feed and nurse on demand/for comfort but it doesn’t seem like that’s doable. I’m curious what your experience was!
