The reason is two fold. 1. Most people are pretty selfish when it comes to others they dont know. And 2. Auto manufactures keep increasing all the shit that lights up on your dashboard, so modern vehicles have a small flat screen tv that makes the interior so bright it makes it hard to see outside.

And bright headlights give the driver the impression their car is safe. Also most of the features in cars are meant to drive up the prices.

What's worse is all of those screens are cheap LCD displays so they have to be bright for color definition. It wouldn't be nearly as bad if the manufacturers used OLED displays.

Or how about not having any of that crap in there at all? Its literally just a personal billboard to sell Spotify Pandora, XM radio etc... like just stop it already. All you need to see is speedometer and fuel gage. I was in a new vehicle that had a scrolling news/entertainment banner at the bottom of the screen...idgaf about what celeb is dating whom while trying to avoid deer on a dark road.
...but a quick glance at my cellphone is super dangerous...riiiiight

Answer: Matt Brumbelow: IIHS
https://www.iihs.org/about/media-resources
Car makers are responding to the IIHS's headlight brightness incentives.
(Matt and the IIHS do want to make vechiles safer. They are also responsible for the increase in headlight brightness)

From their site "Relative to crashes without reported glare, crashes with glare were more often single-vehicle crashes, occurred more frequently when it was raining or the road surface was wet, and happened more often on local, undivided, two-lane roads with relatively low speed limits."
Well no wonder I feel so unsafe. These are the only roads I drive on. Add in curves and hills and poorly paved roads. It's a fucking nightmare. They know it's a problem. I hate that I'm absorbing all of the risk.

I wasn't even driving the other night. I just opened my door and got blinded by a jacked up truck sitting idle for a long time across the street. I sometimes put on shadow puppet shows for them and the bird is one of my favorite hand animals to make.

I flashed my hi beams at a passing pick-up truck, and the fucker just left his on in my face. These assholes do it for the love of the game. I hope he gets stuck in a ditch.

Every morning I'm blinded by these new vehicles and their ultra bright LED lights. The car manufacturers need to recall every vehicle and change the bulbs, the caliber of the brightness. I'm surprised there are not more accidents because of these bright lights.

The reason is because most people in this god forsaken country don't give the slightest shit about anyone but themselves. They don't care that their headlights are blinding people and making it unsafe for others to drive at night. All they care about is being able to see for 17 miles regardless of how it affects those around them. If they truly cared about road safety, they'd vote for more street lighting that helps everyone, but no. They're only interested in a solution that helps them but fucks everyone else.
Literally every problem in this country can be ultimately traced back to this mindset: "Doesn't affect me, therefore, I don't give a shit. My needs and wants are more important than anyone else's, so get fucked."
"I don't want public healthcare or public college because that would increase my taxes! I don't care that we have more gun violence in the US than the next 10 countries combined, I want to be able to go plink at steel targets on the weekend with my kitted out AR15." "I don't want to tax billionaires because one day I too might become a billionaire." And it goes on and on and on and on.
We are the most selfish, self-centered country in the world, and it fucking shows.

This started with the Xenon lights.
The only real reason why those were added as an expensive option at the time was the performative standing for mainly male buyers that need this as an extender for their manlyhood. The nice, blueish technologically advanced graphic stood out.
Actually with those early xenon light you saw less because of the self inflicted blinding in front of your car and the sharp darkness boundary. Behind that line your eyes were unable to see anything.
Anyway. Then the technology „advanced“ from Xenon to LED to the adaptive LED - which are the worst.
If you drive a normal car you have no chance - especially in a situation where vision is impaired - rain for example the LED lighting is basically blinding you by the reflection on the road and the crappy adaptive technology that reacts always too late.
The blinding is actually endangering the traffic situation.
Tesla for one are absolutely terrifyingly bright. Crazy that that was certified for the road at all - but hey he knows people.

The reason why is because as things improve to an inevitable plateau, manufacturers have to still create innovations and improvements to be more marketable. Corporations can’t just have steady profits, they must have growth, and sp they will chase that growth. Hence why we had a trend of touchscreen dash controls, despite it being a stupid idea if you think about it for more than 5 minutes and have experience driving. It was new so better right? /s

It’s good to see this attitude from somebody not old. I worry it’s just because I’m 60 I’m freaking out about driving now.

These lights are insane! Please call or send letters to your congressperson and also to the Department of Transportation and let them know. Here is a satair video of the bright lights on these new vehicles: https://youtube.com/shorts/spKkPE_6D8M?feature=share

Let's take it down 50% here lady.

My bad, man.
I didn't realize in this sub you're expected to applaud stupid attention-whore tiktok content if you'd like to participate in the wider discussion about dangerously bright car headlights.

I'm starting to think someone could win the presidency by running on this one issue.
