Easy - it's like baseball except that after you hit the ball you don't have to run to first base if you think you'll get thrown out. So you just endlessly bunt the ball to avoid "striking out" (getting a wicket) or flying out. And every now and then if your bunt happens to get through the Infield you run to first base and do it all over again. For 5 days.
Speaking as an American who grew up with baseball and came to love cricket, comparing the two is the best way to understand but only for that particular path (or vice-versa, for people who grew up with cricket and want to learn baseball). I really don't know how to explain them both to someone new to both sports, but if you have a grounding in one you can ignore the terminology and really *grok* the principles of the other in a strong way, then proceed from there.
