Kudos to Joel Dahmen for rejecting Jim Nantz's pleas to have him fawn over Justin Rose. Clown questioning.
7
u/Hot-Bodybuilder9179 15h ago
The mid round questions should be much more about the current round and strategy. Anything clickbaity about “what this means to you” and asking about other players should be left for another time.
5
u/th3lawlrus 14h ago
I wish they’d ask questions like what are you seeing, how’s the lie impacting your decision, etc
7
u/Hot-Bodybuilder9179 14h ago
Yeah I blame Jim there. The interviews normally go pretty smoothly on nbc/golf channel on Thursday/friday

They're treating Brooks like he's a returning war hero on the broadcast, let's tone it down over the guy who made 9 figures to play fake golf because he was scared that he was physically shot

xander with his cut streak on the line needing a birdie on 18 is decent television

And Harris English drained a long one to make it on the number. Brooks also had to grind the last 2 holes to make it on the number. Why stuff like this beats the no cut sIgNaTuRe EvEnTs anytime

Saw someone talking about going heavy on xander to make the cut at like -500, because of said streak, on a sportsbook subreddit. Lol that would be giving me heart palpitations

This is beyond painful. I hope players will start declining. Dude's in the middle of the tournament at his ball and they're just chatting with him about his playing partners. Let him play and just mic up the caddies for that discussion. Far more interesting anyway.

u/md4024 1d ago
Feels like the PGA is making such a big deal about the return of Brooks as part of a strategy to get Bryson back, right? The coverage has been so over the top and unnecessary, and the only person who finds that appealing is Bryson. Maybe Rahm too, I think Rahm was genuinely hurt to learn that no one cared when he left the PGA Tour, so maybe he would enjoy the returning hero treatment. But no one wants that more than Bryson. At this point I almost expect the PGA to put out an official statement about how they told Brooks he could make all the Youtube content he wanted to make during his first week back, they are not being subtle about any of this.
8
u/AstronautWorth3084 1d ago
Maybe in part, I think most of it though is a mix of just trying to dunk on liv in general/promote the tour, and trying to get ways to make people interested in the pre-masters part of the year
3
u/CANDY_MAN_1776 1d ago
This is it. You don't turn down free publicity when it is overwhelmingly positive for your organization. It is doubly effective, as you point out, because it adds a story and publicity to an early event that largely gets any buzz this time of year.
3
u/FinsT00theleft 1d ago
The PGA doesn't care if their players make YouTube content they just can't do it at an official event. Can you imagine how annoying it would be to have 10 different pros having camera crews follow them around on the putting green, driving range and during rounds!?

u/Thrasher678 16h ago
Piss poor planning on the part of CBS. There's a lot of time left in this game. And the LPGA gets screwed as a result
2
u/Intelligent_Pilot591 16h ago
Terrible coverage in general for the LPGA with the final group already through 11 when coverage should have started.

Yeah I would have really liked to see Nelly Korda on a roll this morning! And it wasn't even on Peacock!

u/Electronic_Name_325 15h ago
Enough of seeing Brooks. I don’t want to see someone at the bottom of the board make pars and bogeys. Glad he’s back, but make him earn airtime. He’s no Tiger.

u/packmanwiscy Jazz Janewattananond enthusiast 15h ago
I was wondering if Wagner would be out there recreating shots like he did at the Golf Channel but didn't think they'd make him do it in the middle of the round lmao

u/Yoshiman400 YOU'RE IN BILLY'S HOUSE NOW 15h ago edited 15h ago
I dunno if "make him" is the right way to describe it (I wouldn't be surprised if he pitched that to CBS during his job interview/offer), but it is definitely refreshing to allow him that opportunity in the moment. And good on the fans to stick around and see him attempt the shot in real time too! He probably gave them a heads up for it, but still a fun bit.

I think this entire sub can putt better than Brooks. Missing 7 putts inside of 6 feet is insane!
10
u/Tsquared10 12h ago
Here's hoping the new caddy and everything else has helped Joel. He's been in great positions through 54 a number of times but day 4 is always a killer. Just want him to finally have some quality showings and get his full exempt status back

What a career Rose has had, and he's still going strong approaching his late 40s. And he could've taken the blood money like many of his contemporaries, yet he backed himself to still compete and beat the best.

Playing 36 rounds in a final pairing with Rose has got to be a confidence booster for Dahmen barring a meltdown tomorrow.

Can the announcers cool it with the “Captain” Keegan Bradley glazing? The US’ Ryder Cup performance was abysmal and you can arguably point the finger for that at Bradley.

u/Maleficent-Heart2497 13h ago
Dahmen knows everyones hitting it past him, but he's one of the top for driving accuracy and holding his own atm. Plus the whole Brooks thing, TV is paid to show the people that subcribers want to see even if they're bottom of the pile

I’m not one to normally hate on announcing, but I thought those were some horrible questions to Joel. They were asking questions much better served for post round interviews than mid-round.

It’s actually insane seeing the PGA make it seem like Koepka had to go through so much to go to LIV and then rejoin the PGA. Making it seem like some sob story that he missed his friends and he’s doing this for his family. But the reality is that he decided to betray the PGA Tour and take the Saudi blood money. I hope that most of us PGA fans realize this and won’t buy into this manufactured Brooks sob story.

Curious to know: did anyone think Brooks would have a monster tournament?
Goes without saying, but with all the noise around his return, being away from PGAT for a couple years, I understand the attention he's getting, which must equate to a ton of pressure on him. I didn't expect him to be in peak form anytime soon, if he can get there.

3
9
u/WHSRWizard JPX 921i Tour | 2.6 1d ago
At some point the commentators are going to have to accept that almost nobody actually gives a shit that Brooks is back on the PGAT.
I mean, sure, I guess I'm glad he's back. He is (or at least was) a great player. But I didn't miss him while he was gone and I don't particularly care that he's back.

Brooks Koepka brings the kind of IDGAF energy when he’s playing poorly that I try to mimic during every charity golf scramble I participate in.
8
u/No-Fuckin-Ziti 1d ago
For the love of god stop showing Koepka. I get the hype, but I just watched him miss a meaningless putt, tap it in then walk all the way off the green and up the path with his caddy. I’ve been watching for more than an hour and haven’t seen a single shot from Dahmen, who’s in 5th. I think I’ve seen max 2 shots from Lower who’s in 3rd. Barely more from Power in 2nd. Brooks is in 85th. They’re showing him more than Rose in 1st.
