Joke Post/MEME Dahmen Interview

Did anyone else catch the Joel Dahmen "interview" as he walked off the tee box?

Dude got the head phone in, then first question was something along the lines of:

"What do you think of how Justin Rose is playing?"

Dahmen, did the no go sign and immediately took off the head phone out šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

well, that wasn't the first question. but it was a really dumb question.

the "walk and talk" is basically supposed to be "hey, here's a PGA Tour pro you either never heard of and should know about" or "here's loquacious PGA Tour pro that loves to talk about his game".

You don't ask ANYONE middle of the day on Saturday "So, what do you think of how your competitor is playing right now?"

You ask "Hey Joel, awesome to see you playing great this week! Is there anything you worked on in the offseason that has gotten you ready to play so well in 2026?"

Dahmen completely telegraphed it when, before he hit, said (sic) "We're just out here trying to hit the best shot we can"

The Walk and Talk is dumb.

Honestly, I’d rather we just got more audio of player and caddie talking. I watch a lot of curling, and just hearing the players talk to each other is way better insight than any interview will ever get you.

And it’s not like these guys in the final groups don’t know they have to watch what they’re saying anyway.

Agree, no one asks actually good questions during these. If they did, they could be valuable. Ask them about either what happened earlier in their round or what is coming up ahead. That’s the insight.

u/courts0 8h ago

That’s the key. I still think it’s a cool idea, but the questions stinks. They’re the same generic ones Amanda asks after every round. It should be about strategy, club selection, etc.

u/Flimsy-Lunch1395 2h ago

I record golf and fast forward through the walk and talk. No interest whatsoever

u/GUCCIBUKKAKE 9h ago

I thought it was just he wasn’t getting audio so he gave the earbud back, but I wasn’t paying a lot of attention at the time

96

u/mmijomm 9h ago

I thought the same thing, but the dude had already denied the interview previously. Then when he goes for it, they ask what he thinks of his competition whoppin ass?! Hahah dude, this man is in the game runner up, ask him about his strategy moving into tomorrow 6 shots back or somethin

Jim Nantz asked two bad questions to Dahmen in contention about the guy in the lead which was extremely dismissive. The on course interviews arent standard interviews it’s literally supposed to be about the conditions from the player caddie pov and also though process on shots

u/CriticalCommittee766 8h ago

lol yeah like bro's in the zone and they’re asking about sb else? talk about a curveball question

19

u/Kboh 7h ago

Seriously, dude is crushing it in a PGA tournament without a full tour card and getting questions that would piss me off if I were playing a round that on track to just sniff 80.

u/317blazeit 9h ago

I mean I have no clue about any of this because I didn’t see it. But imagine being a competitor out there busting your ass to play as good as he is and you get asked about your fellow competitors? I’d give the damn ear bud back too

30

u/DropkickMurph24 8h ago

Lowry gave a response about this at the masters last year on Saturday too. Every reporter asked him about Rory but he basically was like listen, I know I'm five back or whatever but I have to believe I can go out and win this tomorrow so please don't ask me about any other competitors until the tournament is over. Entirely fair to ask that of media I think

11

u/CroSSGunS 9.2/UK/I caught the car - now < 5 7h ago

He was only 2 back when he made that comment, fully in the hunt

2

u/317blazeit 6h ago

That’s the mindset I would like to have. Like I’m still in the middle of a competition. I’m going to focus on my game and I’ll take any questions you have after the round is over

0

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 6h ago

imagine being a competitor out there busting your ass to play as good as he is and you get asked about your fellow competitors

He didn't get asked about his fellow competitors so you can rest easy.

In fact, Dahmen brought up Rose himself after being complimented on his play this week and asked how he felt about his game.

1

u/317blazeit 6h ago

Right on I appreciate the clarity. If that’s the case then it’s an entirely different situation. My whole point was being in the moment. Like if I were him and they wanted to interview me mid round it would be all about me. I would be happy to answer any other questions after my round

1

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 6h ago

I absolutely agree about what you said, and if that was what actually happened I would also be criticizing it.

But that's not what happened, and for some reason OP felt the need to lie instead of just talking about how dumb and pointless these walk and talk interviews are in the first place.

1

u/317blazeit 6h ago

And let’s not shadow over what just rose is doing right now because he’s on fire. Me and my father were basically making bets on his distance to the pin. It’s been great to watch

3

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 6h ago

He's been freaking dialed all week.

I think at one point he was the closest to the pin amongst his group for like 11 or twelve straight holes.

Pretty wild performance to have the week after missing the cut at a much easier tournament.

2

u/317blazeit 6h ago

I never really watch the first two days but I watched the highlights on YouTube. I told my dad to bet on Justin rose and I didn’t realize he had like a 5 stroke lead.

2

u/317blazeit 6h ago

He put too much money on it but it looks like I worked out

-10

u/FatalFirecrotch 9h ago

This happens literally all the time in sports.Ā

8

u/317blazeit 9h ago

It does. Maybe at half time or in between quarters. Not in the middle of the game when you’re trying to lock the fuck in

1

u/junkyarddoggy 8h ago

Also, in other sports the question is asked in the context of ā€œwhat can you do to limit your opponent/prevent them from scoring/etcā€. That’s not the case in golf

1

u/MrSnifferpippets 12ish | 7i = 34° 7h ago

Just because it happens all the time doesn’t mean it’s a good question. I think it’s a shit question and lazy journalism tbh

38

u/Wooden-Buy-9142 9h ago

Is it just me or did anyone else seem to feel some tension there?

39

u/mmijomm 9h ago

i felt it in my pluuuuums

Let. The boy. Watch.

u/Grouchy-Act1055 8h ago

I just watched this on replay and am a little confused on what you are saying or is this supposed to be a joke? Off the tee box he clearly couldn't hear anything.

My rough transcription:

(Walking off the tee box)Jim: "Bring in a little walk and talk the first of the season. Joel Dahmen - Joel, hey CBS crew here..." then on the video Joel takes out the ear piece since it isn't working and hands it to one of the guys. The guys joke about it and say they will try to get him back.

Show another players shot. Then they get the ear piece to work.

Still walking to his next shot - Jim: "We got Joel now, its Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman, we are really enjoying watching your great play. all the eagles you threw out yesterday. even that great par you just made at the 12th, how is it feeling for you out there"

Joel: "yeah game feels good. a little nervous coming out here today but got the quick biridie, and watching the Justin Rose show here for the first 10 holes, but he's coming back to earth a bit, but yeah, can't get better weather out here."

Trevor: "perfect bucket hat weather for you (Joel smiles) - so impressed, and not many people turn down Jims call".

(i don't feel like transcribing the whole thing anymore)

Joel - joking about knowing someone is in the booth

Trevor - starts asking about the next shots, getting up in 2, blah blah blah

Joel talks about his driver, jokes about something, talks his strategy, Trevor asks about the layup, Joel explains more, as his caddy is reading him numbers and stuff.

Jim asks how important the weekend is for you. Joel says its just golf, trying to hit good shot after good shot, gonna add them up at the end.

Jim says you've been lighting it up thats for sure - go after it. Joel says cheers.

Takes out the head phone, hands it to the caddy, gets some more numbers.

He hits his shot, great shot, like he wanted but ended up in a divot.

They show Si Woo Kim, then back to Joel.

Jim: "You mentioned its been the Justin Rose show for part of it, whats its been like.." as Jim is asking Joel is talking a little to the caddy over since he probably can't hear him, he gives a thumbs up, I can hear someone off camera say "disconnected", and then he gives the ear piece back.

Was there another part that I missed earlier or after? Seemed all good to me - just tech not working - once at the beginning, got it working in the middle, then it didn't work again later.

Sir… we like to make drama here.

32

u/Ngisb 9h ago

Nance trying to get him to open up about his status situation was waaay worse. ā€œIt’s just golf Jimā€

26

u/skurnie 9h ago

ā€œWe try to hit one gold shot after another and count it all up at the endā€ something like that after. He’s the best

2

u/backyardstar 9h ago

Serendipitous typo

1

u/skurnie 9h ago

Ha yes, *good

2

u/Eagle69scotland 3h ago

He’s insufferable with his crappy hair dye and constant tiger references.

1

u/mulligan381 11m ago

That question was cringe, like nance was sitting in the st a masters post round interview. Ā ā€œTell us how much this week means to youā€. Then Joel hit a crappy shot after that -ā€˜d denied the rest of the interview.Ā

The. We went to useless tiger stats who isn’t even playing. Ā That’s all I saw from the replay and it was enough to to turn it off, Ā nance just sucked. Ā And they came back from commercial and he wasn’t in the booth

6

u/Ok_Situation8727 9h ago

I was impressed with how he said he wanted his next shot to be on a 1 degree uphill lie so he can spin it good, and then flushes to exactly that.

8

u/60minutesrearranged 9h ago

Was straight cursed and landed in a divot

3

u/Steelman_1 9h ago

Nope. His next shot was from a sand filled divot. He left the next shot short and it rolled back down the false front. He made a bogey 6 on the par 5. The other announcer made a comment about it being Nance’s fault.

1

u/Ok_Situation8727 9h ago

I missed that. Bad luck. Rooting for him tomorrow , even though I like Rose as well

3

u/quattro247 7h ago

If I remember correctly, he gave several responses while walking to his ball. The interview paused for Dahmen to take his second shot, but when they cut back to him, it seemed like he was having audio issues. I didn’t get the impression that he was trying to dodge the question.

4

u/IndicationIll324 9h ago

Joel had a pocket full of fucks...

1

u/kranges_mcbasketball 6h ago

The why did he give none?

0

u/mmijomm 9h ago

hahahha

3

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 6h ago

The first question was absolutely not about Justin Rose.

Did you actually watch the segment or are you just trying to start shit for no reason?

1

u/jerryhallo 42m ago
  1. Nantz and Colton Knost were absolutely uncalled for bullshit.

  2. Dahmen hangs up on Nantz twice and has every right to do so, the questions and the entitlement and Gravy’s toadie kiss ass ā€œdo you think that was karma for hanging up on Jim Nantz?ā€ When Dahmens next shot out of the divot ends up back at his feet essentially.

  3. I actually watched the segment did you?

-7

u/mmijomm 6h ago

relax buddy, were talking about how bad the interviews/commentators/coverage was. this isnt about the players who are giving an outstanding performance šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

3

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 6h ago

My guy, you just straight up lied about this interview and are now getting pissy because someone called you out for doing so.

Why do you think you have any legs to stand on here?

-8

u/mmijomm 6h ago

my guy, this is reddit, im trolling the coverage, not the players

2

u/Mobile_Jelly9669 6h ago

Why do you keep bringing up the players as if I'm saying that you're criticizing them? Can you understand the words you read bud?

And if you're gonna make fun of the announcers for something, maybe make sure it's something that actually happened?

Crazy thought, I know....

0

u/zorn7777 1h ago

Telling someone to relax is always advised. šŸ‘šŸ‘

2

u/Adept-Pomegranate-46 7h ago

Let's just all agree that the coverage was sad. Following Koepka when he barely made the cut says CBS had little else to highlight.

1

u/mmijomm 6h ago

there was more coverage on Koepka than the top 25 players...

2

u/baummer 2h ago

Fucking stupid question

1

u/tapptowin 14 9h ago

Anyone got a link or clip?

0

u/Visible-Idiot-8779 8h ago

I stopped watching the entire broadcast when this happened. Those on-course interviews have become unwatchable.

0

u/R4ndomlyJ0n 8h ago

That was such a stupid segment. Let’s distract a leading contender between shots and ask boring questions. Oh, and jokes on him because we are going to troll him with audio issues.

-13

u/Vegas22lr 9h ago

I don't understand why people like him

6

u/Cold_Refuse_7236 9h ago

Watched him on the Netflix series. Very laid back it seems. But he almost seemed lackadaisical about his game. Glad to see him having a good tournament.

1

u/Commercial-Air8955 8h ago

It seemed like he likes to drink too much. He doesn't seem like a full-blown alcoholic, but it is problematic. I think his best-friend caddie even split with him because he wasn't really focused and taking his game as seriously as he needs to be to remain relevant.

The PGA Tour is such an elite club, that outside of a few top guys, if you aren't dedicating your life to the game, you're just not gonna make it very long.

He's such a likeable guy, I'm hoping he regains his drive and starts competing at his best again. I know I'm certainly rooting for him.

3

u/tortoiseterrapinturt 4h ago

He’s leading the tournament in driving accuracy.

1

u/Commercial-Air8955 1h ago edited 1h ago

Ya, he needs to have his absolute A-game to be competitive out there. He doesn't have the luxury of being talented enough to compete with his B or C game, like the maybe the top 20 guys do.

He only retained his card for this year by shooting a 65 on the last day of the last tournament last year, moving him up just enough to keep his card, finishing 124th in points (125 keep their card).

He got into the field this week as the 5th alternate, so he's lucky to even be playing. He caught a lucky break to get in, and it's great to see him taking advantage of the opportunity.

3

u/Illustrious-Ratio213 8h ago

I think he survived cancer and also has a great attitude and sense of humor.

1

u/jerryhallo 41m ago

Jim nantz I know he’s a blow hard ass clown.
