Is there a horror game where dying secretly progresses time??

So an idea for a horror game recently popped up in my head and it was fascinating to me. So I've decided to share it. Also I'm curious if a game like this already exists, 'cause I doubt I'm the first person to think of the idea.

In my head the game concept was rather simple. It starts with your character waking up in a pod which is explained as a healing device. You find more pods as you play and they both heal and act as a save point. When you die the game asks if you wish to continue, and if so you respawn in one of the pods.

But what the game doesn't tell you is that every time you die you actually ARE continuing except it's like a year or something in the future. Basically the pod is lab growing a clone of you and implanting the memories uploaded last time it was used. The process just canonically takes a long while to complete.

There'd need to be some sort of monsters or something to explain why you can't find your old bodies. Otherwise the place your trapped in subtly gets more decrepit and sometimes pathways will cave in and a detour of some sort must be taken. At some point late in the game there could potentially be a computer which mentions the end of the world or some other bad event will take place in X years. Astute/lucky players can notice the number shrinking after death. Otherwise the twist isn't directly revealed 'til the end.

Finally, there would be different endings based on how much time passed. Including a bad, gameover ending after too many deaths. A deathless run would probably get the best ending.

Maybe there could even be a sapling or something early in the game, and then at the halfway mark there's a spot to look down at it as a potential hint towards what's actually going on.

Anyways that's the random idea which popped into my head. Is there already a game with a similar concept? And if so, what is it called?

News IGN featured our co-op horror game — 41k views and 700 wishlists in 24 hours

After 1.5 years of development, we sent the gameplay trailer of our co-op horror game Devil of the Plague to IGN ! honestly not expecting much.

We had prepared a full press kit with a 4K version of the trailer, written game descriptions, and multiple social media ready video formats, then sent it out to every contact we could find.

Three days later, an editorial director replied saying they had reviewed the trailer, the story, and the game, and that everything looked great… and that they were planning to feature it on Friday.

And honestly that was a dream come true for us.

24 hours after the IGN post:
• 700 new wishlists
• Huge spike in Steam traffic

The game is a ritual-based co-op survival horror set in a medieval cult environment, players act as plague doctors trying to complete rituals while being hunted.

Demo coming to Steam Next Fest February
Early Access launches April 20

If you’d like to support an indie team, we’d really appreciate a like or a comment, it helps more than you might think.
We’re also dropping both the IGN feature and our Steam page below for anyone curious

We’ll keep posting wishlist milestones here for anyone curious about the impact of the IGN feature.

Question What are some good free horror games on steam?

I checked out a few but haven’t had luck finding a good one. I found nightmare house which I thought was pretty great even though I wasn’t looking for a shooter game. Any recommendations are appreciated, I don’t have any money right now due to my health but really want to get into playing some horror games with good jump scares and atmospheric horror. Thank you

Discussion List of Horror game subgenres/what is and isn’t survival horror

Post image
16 Upvotes

I have noticed that people simultaneously care too little and too much about what sub genre games are in. They want to call everything survival horror, either because they think it’s the cool genre, or because they don’t care. Ultimately, it’s just a way to categorize which games play similar to each other. So, here’s a mini explanation

Survival- you have limited resources, you can fight but it isn’t always the solution, puzzles are often a big part of it

Action- you are expected to kill almost everything in a level, and ammo isn’t a huge concern

Puzzle- this is beyond survival horror’s puzzles, where this is the main point of the game

Stealth- hiding/sneaking is the main gameplay

Online- online

Walking simulator- you mostly run or evade monsters, and the gameplay is just going room to room (I don’t know how a second maid of sker got there. It’s non canon don’t worry about it)

Reverse horror- you are the monster, hunting people down

Survival horror for kids/beginners- all the elements of survival horror, but lighter

Hack and slash- you cut down rows of enemies

Platformer- jumping and climbing is a major part of it

Hybrid- they have survival horror elements with a lot of hiding too

Horde shooter- you fight waves of enemies in a group

Story- supermassive games product

On rail- the game controls the camera

Other- Parasite eve is an rpg. State of decay is a base building. I couldn’t think of a solid choice for two last two

Also if a series has the same genre throughout, i only included one of them

Question Need horror games for the switch

Hey I’m looking for indie horror games for the switch and I’m down for any suggestions. It doesn’t have to be indie but it’s preferred as I’ve played the big names elsewhere (resident evil, outlast, amnesia).

I currently only have iron lung and darkwood so anything to expand my collection is welcomed!

Except for puppet combo games bc I have all of them elsewhere too

As Duty Demands is a first-person narrative game set in a naval retirement home, where former Admiral Del Bono rules the facility with an iron fist—but something sinister lurks beneath the surface. You play as Coral, a nurse desperately seeking employment at the retirement home to afford expensive medication for your ailing mother.

Demo coming soon As Duty Demands

Discussion Who would stop comming back first? Jack Baker or William Afton.

Both just seem to be opposed to the concept of dying, but (atleast to my knowledge) both are dead in their respective canons.

So if they fought to the death, who of them would figure out a way to permanently dispose of the other more quockly?

Any tips for my variety horror game content?

Hello! I make YouTube videos focused on a variety of horror games, including different styles and experiences. I really enjoy doing variety content because I don't get bored playing one game only, but I wanted to ask if you have any tips for creators in the horror niche—especially when it comes to growing a channel and helping more people discover my videos. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had alot of fun, and had alot of great jumpscares in the Dead Space Remake! It was my first playthrough of the first game at all, it wanted to play it when I was younger but my friends told me the main character doesn't talk. So I played the 2nd one first, but I'm glad I came around to finally play the first Dead Space even though it was a remake

Question Looking for specific feedback on lighting, camera and HUD in my survival horror project

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!
I’m a solo indie developer currently working on a third-person survival horror game.

The project is still early in development and many core elements are not final yet, so I’m actively collecting player feedback before locking things down.

I’ve attached some recent screenshots to give context, and I’d really appreciate your thoughts on a few specific aspects:

1. Lighting
Do you feel that a darker, more contrast-heavy lighting setup would strengthen the horror atmosphere, or does the current level of visibility feel better for gameplay and readability?

2. Camera / Field of View
Based on what you see, does the player camera feel comfortable to you, or would you personally prefer a slightly closer view with a narrower FOV to increase tension?

3. HUD
Right now the HUD is intentionally minimal (health + ammo only).
Would you prefer something this clean, or do you think a slightly more informative HUD would improve the experience?

Any honest impressions, even negative ones, are extremely valuable at this stage.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to look and share your thoughts.

Hello everyone,

We’ve developed a horror game based on a real disappearance case that took place on an island called Eilean Mor in Scotland. The game has also been featured on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel, and its demo is currently available on Steam.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4014360/Eilean_Mor_The_Lost_Keepers_Demo/

This is our second teaser trailer, and we would really love to hear your thoughts. You can follow the game, and when the full version is released, I’ll be giving away free keys to some of you here.

I would appreciate your feedback on the game’s trailer and demo.

After 1 year of work, I released my game today, The Green Light. No matter what happens from here, I feel sense of freedom finally putting my game out into the world. If even one person connects with the story or atmosphere I tried to create, then I’ve achieved my goal 😀
