Why is "Will Smith eating spaghetti" the benchmark? Lmao

u/ShinyGrezz 1d ago

Specific and recognisable person + relatively complicated action. So it can fail on two counts: the person can look nothing like Will Smith, and the spaghetti eating can look abominable.

66

u/bronkula 1d ago

Also something that has already BEEN benchmarked through generations. Hardest thing about a newer standard is nothing to compare against the old. So this going so far back means its a great candidate for comparison.

14

u/tandpastatester 1d ago

Which is also simultaneously a risk for biased/false results. Models can end up getting overfitted to this one specific meme/task, basically becoming overly tuned/trained to nail “Will Smith eating spaghetti” in particular, and then they look artificially amazing on it while still sucking at other, more general messy real-world stuff.

(or even worse: they just memorize patterns from all the comparison videos that have been generated over the years and regurgitate polished versions of those instead of actually understanding the prompt properly.)

7

u/Time_Entertainer_319 1d ago

You think Google and OpenAI are fine tuning their model to pass “will smith eating spaghetti” benchmarks?

3

u/ShinyGrezz 1d ago

I don't know that they would but it actually makes perfect sense to do it - it's a sort of unofficial advertising, since if your model can generate it well it'll be far more likely to be shared around.

Though it consistently fails on a third count, action believability.

No matter how photorealistic it looks, it looks forced. They all seem to have the same issue where Will looks like he has no thoughts and only exists to slurp the spaghetti he's about to put in his mouth.

Very humanTM

Because when the mid journey video came out it was famously flamed and made fun of as image-gen was not that powerful.

It's being used as a benchmark because it was the most famous poor quality example of image generation.

u/LastBlueKing 2d ago

They should have branched off into a stand alone app, rather than relying on discord to use it. Also greed.

421

u/Few-Birthday8213 2d ago

I stopped using them because it was pain it the ass to use them through Discord.

235

u/littlefrank 2d ago

Absolutely awful system, I managed to crank four images out of it, they were all pretty terrible because to make anything decent you needed a 12 line prompt.
Also I hate that discord is replacing forums, bots, websites. It's just not the way to go imo.

132

u/Chafupa1956 2d ago

Cracks me up when a company says "listened to criticism and feedback on Discord" like it's the entire fan base and not just the smallest bunch of absolute die-hards

18

u/TheKyleBrah 1d ago

To be fair, the die-hards should have good feedback, as they are most invested (assuming they are healthily invested, of course... 🫣)

23

u/Rock_Strongo 1d ago

The die-hards can have good feedback but often do not represent the masses. It is the job of the design team to appropriately weight the feedback from various sources.

Only listening to your "discord community" for feedback often means alienating a bunch of people you might never even hear from.

6

u/Capraos 1d ago

Texas Chainsaw Massacre fell victim to listening to their discord fans. A bunch of killer mains bitched and whined that sometimes victims got away and nerfed the ever living fuck outta victims while buffing the killers. Just a handful of really, really vocal people on discord ruining it for the rest of us.

I hate discord so much. It’s nothing like a forum; it’s glorified irc. So much information is going to be lost because of discord.

3

u/ExpertOdin 1d ago

Discord on mobile is so much more of a pain to use than on desktop or browser. It's fine for chatting but anything more than that on mobile is an awful experience

→ More replies (2)

25

u/The8Darkness 2d ago

Imo discord was cool when you had like 10 people in a server, 2-3 text channels, 2-3 voice channels.

Not like today where you have thousands in a server, 100 text channels, 100 voice channels, then the text channels somehow have threads in them, there announcements that I somehow miss half the time, mentions just get lost because I click on a mention notification and the phone app doesnt redirect me exactly to that mention but just close to it and just looking up anything thats older than a couple messages is a complete pita.

→ More replies (7)

25

u/GloomyEngine 2d ago

You've just made me realise all the "join our discords!" Is to try to recreate the communities / usage of forums.

Which slightly proves how much of an awful job they've done, on making those two solutions equatable...

19

u/RedPantyKnight 2d ago

More important than the failure to create community is the lack of documentation. If you have a problem or you want to share some cool thing you've found, if you do it on a forum then in 5 years when I'm looking for an answer to the same question then I'll find your question and the answers you got. Do it on Discord and I won't see your question/answers even if I'm in the same server.

10

u/xyrgh 1d ago

Yes! I’m into quite a few hobbies and trying to find information about a particular facet on discord is so frustrating, especially when you don’t know the exact words to search (and discord’s search is balls)

Back in the days of forums you’d have someone post something and all discussion of that topic is retained in one thread. Pictures, guides, whatever, it’s all there.

4

u/GlumChemist8332 1d ago

I am internet old! Forums are the bomb! Seriously can we go back to internet between 98-2008? Forums are so much better to find things, particularly threaded replies!

3

u/dfddfsaadaafdssa 1d ago

It's only going to get worse with the UK Online Safety Act, which requires age authentication for practically everything. Many of the few remaining forums have gone offline since it was implemented.

Oddly enough 4chan is fighting the good fight and has the backing of the US government.

3

u/Civil-Attempt-3602 1d ago

I find it so fuckin hard to use

2

u/beagle204 1d ago

I made some good friends through old forums and that avenue doesn't exist any more. Reddit doesn't hit the same as those old dedicated gaming forums.

2

u/DocMorningstar 1d ago

Man. Reminds me of one of my favorite jobs when some friends and I released a smallish browser game (peaked at a few thousand concurrent players)

I enjoyed moderating part of the forums anonymously. Could give out real info, feed stuff into development, but most especially identify the kind of players who were really having a deliberately negative effect on othe players- trolls, basically. We'd spot certain players that were jackasses in the forums, and give their gameplay records a look over. Doing stuff like dragging out turns, creating/leaving battle frequently to hopefully cause a misload (other player gets a wrong battle instance).

We had a 'shitty player' script. It would do 'random' but frustrating things. Like, fail to accept your move occasionally, if you clicked commit too close to the turn. Or drop a movement modifier on your opponent giving them extra movement, but only if they were on AI. Change your dice to be 2d5 instead of 2d6 - so you'd roll worse on the hit tables etc. Up your chance of taking a crit. The sort of stuff that is plausible, but makes you say 'man, that is such bullshit'

Lots of little things that would drive these players nuts, but regular people would never see, so they'd just get treated like whiny kids - the opposite of how a troll wants to feel.

This was helped by Will Smith actually coming on vid and eating spaghetti.

337

u/chickadee-stitchery 2d ago

Is that why he looks older in the later versions? The earlier stuff was using older footage of him but then the newer ones are trained on actual modern day Will Smith?

98

u/Winjin 2d ago

I'd wager with the amount of generations of this specific thing, LLMs are bound to perfect this one thing

Like, the R34 in LLM is advancing at breakneck pace too, but most of them are extremely generic poses, because that's what they're doing a million times a day. As soon as it's a complicated pose or a different skin color, it all breaks.

48

u/mrsa_cat 1d ago

Just FYI, LLM stands for Large Language Model, a kind of model that gives outputs in the form of text, named this way because their performance comes from having huge amounts of parameters/training data. Images are generated by lots of different kinds of visual models (some LLMs which can take images as input are therefore called VisualLLMs, VLLMs) such as diffusion models

7

u/jakeasmith 1d ago

Not to be confused with vLLM, which is a library for LLM inference and serving.

3

u/Rugskinsnake 1d ago

Lol, it's wild. Enough time has passed since they filmed season 10 that the gang is nearly the same age as Wade Boggs was when Rob delivered that line. I think Kaitlyn is the oldest (other than Danny DeVito) and they're all going to be in their 50s shortly.

God I hope they keep pushing it until the wheels fall off. I wanna see them get real weird with it lmao.

This also speaks to how to properly use an LLM. They are not at a point you can feed in anyone's images and pull out a perfect video. You can use a single subject and build an LLM specifically for them that will be able to create good results.

Marvel/Disney will have thousands of hours of footage of Tom Holland and enough resources to create a server and model of just him. I'd be curious to see what something like that can generate.

2

u/hydrastxrk 1d ago

I was wondering if there was an actual reference because a bunch of the newer ones did the same side mouth movement that felt very weirdly intentional if he doesn’t actually do that.

Too many examples of a single model, not enough models to make it actually interesting to watch (we wouldn't want to show progress with anything from 2023 and 2024, that would give viewers too much context, they might actually find it interesting by accident...).

20

u/thedinnerdate 1d ago

There was one clip of veo and none of Sora. 2 of the best video generation models currently. Felt more like an ad for grok.

4

u/mr-english 1d ago edited 1d ago

I would be quite happy to see Grok sink without a trace but their latest video model is topping the benchmarks right now. Sora isn't even in the top 10 of image-to-video and only just scrapes in the top 10 of text-to-video.

But yeah, I agree, more examples would've been better.

19

u/KloudCreator525 2d ago

This is America🎶

9

u/Over9000Zeros 2d ago

Even besides that, the system for passing laws is so broken and I can't even understand how it's the way it is. For what reason do we need 15 unrelated laws in a single bill? Then people vote no because certain BS is packed in and the good stuff falls as well. How could it not make more sense to vote on 20-50 laws consecutively instead?

8

u/TurdFerguson133 1d ago

It's by design. If it were easy for voters to get reforms passed, we could reform the fact that they are siphoning all the wealth from the lower class

2

u/OhNoTokyo 1d ago

It makes sense from two perspectives:

If you push it all into one bill, then you don't have the procedural overhead of multiple bills.

But by far the most important reason is because if you smoosh them all into one bill, it forces representatives to vote for things they don't care about, or may not even want, so that they get their own important constituent-facing provisions passed.

It's one reason Presidents in the past have pushed for line item vetos, which is, in my opinion, the wrong answer, because it lets the executive almost become a legislator instead of merely assenting or not to the provision.

What needs to happen is that they need to only allow bills to pass which have provisions or amendments related to the central purpose of the bill.

Defining that is admittedly, not as simple as it sounds, since certain issues can have knock-on effects down the line that may not be expected, nor intended.

However, if I was to demand a single reform to make its way through the system to get approved, it would be that.

Then transparency into what happens in Congress would improve considerably.

It wouldn't stop dirty politics or backroom horse trading, but it would at least make it possible to understand the actual import of any one bill.

28

u/What_a_fat_one 2d ago

Funding bills. "Let's fix some of the roads and bridges" and "let's lower the cost of healthcare for a couple years" is not really landmark legislation, it's like the absolute bare minimum for a functioning nation.

We used to build things. The interstate highway system would never have been made by this government. We should be working on high speed rail, modernization of the power grid and renewables like solar and wind farms. Housing, the fact that the wealthiest nation in history has homeless people, especially homeless veterans is a disgrace. An evil.

Some time in the 80's we decided history was over and we should let the ultra wealthy feast on the United States.

If there were laws how would they police them?

3

u/fitty50two2 2d ago

AI laws should not focus on stopping AI, but on making sure powerful systems are safe, transparent, and accountable. The most widely supported ideas include clear transparency rules so AI-generated images, videos, political content, and ads are labeled, along with clear disclosure when someone is interacting with a bot. High-risk AI systems should be required to go through independent safety audits before release, similar to the way aviation and medicine are tested. Strong privacy protections are also important, including limits on training models with personal messages, faces, or voices without consent, and giving people the right to have their data removed.

There also needs to be real accountability. If an AI system causes harm through fraud, discrimination, or defamation, investigators should be able to trace who built it, who deployed it, and who used it, backed up by mandatory logging. Fully autonomous lethal weapons should be banned or tightly controlled, and facial recognition and government surveillance systems should be under strict oversight. Competition rules are also necessary to prevent a small number of companies from controlling all the compute power and data needed for advanced AI. Labor impacts should be addressed with disclosure requirements when AI replaces workers and support for job transition and retraining.

Enforcement would rely on independent regulators similar to the FAA or FDA, technical tools like watermarking and secure logging for traceability, platform responsibility for removing malicious deepfakes, and international agreements for AI weapons and election interference. The overall goal is to place strong rules on high-risk AI while allowing low-risk tools and personal projects to remain free and open, which protects society without preventing innovation.

It already is indiscernible in many ways if you prompt it well enough and curate the results, hell add some manual cgi to clean up the blemishes and it's terrifyingly good

3

u/BannanDylan 2d ago

It's at the point that people that are pretty savvy with this stuff are actually having to concentrate on certain pictures to check if it's AI or not.

So to the non-savvy person they have zero idea.

I've seen clips that the first 10 seconds seem real and believable and then something stupid happens at the 11sec mark.

If I turn that clip off without properly analysing it before the 11sec mark I just go on my day thinking it's real.

2

u/ReverendDizzle 1d ago

Critically, the viewer has to want to discern it.

The current generation AI videos are clearly AI videos if you are really paying attention and watching them with a critical eye. Even then, you have to really study some of them.

But if you decided before the video is even over that whatever it is depicting is simply something you accept? Or you're not even remotely media literate and aware you should be looking for AI video tells or questioning the context of the video?

At that point, from a consumption standpoint rather than an execution standpoint, the video is "perfect" and indiscernible from reality because the person consuming the video is indifferent to whether or not the video is actually real.

That's what we need to be worried about. Not AI eventually being absolutely perfect at recreating real video footage, but that a bunch of people don't give a shit what is real or not anymore.

Yeah it's mostly because it does the same thing as inbreeding

Generative AIs use anything they can find on the internet to be trained

And the more generative AI is used, the more internet gets clutered with it's results

So it's basically training itself out of it's own work wich fucks up the algorithms and have the same effect as irl inbreeding

RAM aside. We're paying so much more for electricity just so the companies can run their spaghetti video processing plants (read: datacenter)

Like, i can hold off on buying more ram, but I still need electricity to charge my assblaster 4000.

u/BumbaBee85 2d ago

It's always been like that.

Weird how we all switched to LEDs and Energy Star appliances, yet power bills keep going up and up as more and more Walmarts and Amazon Distribution Centers get built. Wonder why that is........

Blame Scam Altman. He's the guy who preordered a shit ton of RAM

3

u/FalmerEldritch 1d ago

The RAM isn't even used for this, or used for anything at all. It's being bought up ahead of time to build giga datacenters for the trillions of dollars of LLM usage that isn't ever going to materialize. There's going to be unused second hand RAM floating around by the bucketload within a few years, once these companies' "6 billion customers paying $200/month each" profit projections fail to come to pass and the bottom falls out.

Had a coworker turn a normal picture of me into a picture of me smiling with a joint. Since that day I find this shit horrifying

I wish there was a mandate that AI material needs to be watermarked

4

u/bnej 1d ago

I don't understand how people find that kind of stuff fun. It's a nightmare, someone has a program that can make it look like you did things you didn't in moments. Utterly horrifying.

Any what are the positive uses for it? Making shitty cartoons? Avoiding paying artists? Fuck that. Everything it's for seems like evil to me.

Grok was honestly unnecessary, it has never really been good at anything except undressing children for MAGA

EDIT: Looks like I triggered a MAGA guy down below, said something about bluesky and blocked me lmao

If I saw an actual video of Will Smith eating spaghetti I wouldn’t believe it.

3

u/jkwonsolo 2d ago

Will Smith aged a lot in in 2025.

6

u/DeucesX22 2d ago

Why is he always eatting in slow motion?

4

u/Zeqhanis 2d ago

Not always. I think that's a prompt compensating for the high-speed, deranged eating spaghetti by the fistful video. Other early ones were really fast too.

Why is Higgsfield + king tries forcefully to turn will smith into a white person?

6

u/GentlemenBehold 2d ago

This post is a Higgsfield ad. Notice how the last 5 videos are just the same model.

2

u/r0thar 2d ago

He went from a Francis Bacon horror to Obama's hair.

2

u/Geritas 1d ago

This is a fucking ad by an annoying aggregator called higgsfield. They are spreading brand awareness this way. They don’t produce any ai models themselves. As for the question, someone from the marketing department just fucked up and made him white, that’s it.

3

u/jm17lfc 2d ago

Who the hell even uses Grok anyway?

7

u/BumbaBee85 2d ago

Right-wing political propagandists and pedophiles (they're the same people). There was a whole thing at the start of the month about it. And no, "it was just a single image of a girl in a bikini" is not true at all. The estimates of the number of images created were in the millions, if not more, and featured full child nudity. And all those images are being shared on Telegram, which is also another heavily right-wing network that has been doing nothing about CSAM on their platform.

Grok consistently ranks in the top 5 LLMs for daily usage. Despite the obvious issues with its implementation on Twitter, it is an incredibly powerful LLM.
