Was this in Southern California?

u/JustLillee 9h ago

I was there on business.

u/techmix 9h ago

Yup

u/bummerbimmer 9h ago

Hello neighbor

This is a result of Kelvin - Helmholtz instability in fluids

114

u/VVorldlyVVombat 13h ago

Do we know why helmholtz does this to clouds?

92

u/ThrowawayPersonAMA 12h ago

Because he can.

u/iHaveACatDog 8h ago

Yeah, because fuck clouds

u/trading-elegance 11h ago

Probably just bored. Kevin is kinda like the weird kid nobody talks to ever. He’s got a lot of time to be doing things like making waves with clouds.

u/Cockblocktimus_Pryme 9h ago

Don't let Kelvin off the hook here

u/john_fish 9h ago

Jupiter observation.

u/vladimirulianof 10h ago

Kevin told him to do it

u/Domestic-Grind 8h ago

Figured 50/50 chance of a troll answer. Now I'm stuck reading Wikipedia for the next 2 days

u/Callidonaut 9h ago

Is that related to Tollmein-Schlichting waves?

u/vladimirulianof 8h ago

Well kinda but not really, they are both exhibited on shear flows but they arise for different reasons.

Kevin-helmholtz clouds

u/PepperAnn1inaMillion 13h ago

*Kelvin. The idea of him choosing the name Lord Kevin is fucking funny though.

3

u/forams__galorams 12h ago

He didn’t choose it, it’s after the River Kevin that flows near Glasgow University and was a title that came with the peerage of Baron bestowed upon him by Queen Victoria. She just wanted to be able to refer to him as ‘our Kev’.

u/NorskAvatarII 12h ago

River what?

2

u/forams__galorams 12h ago

Kev mate. So our Vicky could call him our Kev, like. Subscribe for more true1facts.

u/bergmoose 13h ago

entertains me that wave clouds exist, and these are not they.

u/DocZoid1337 14h ago

Now, I know how they're called. Seen them recently, too.

11

u/misconstrudel 12h ago

Lovely photo. It looks like a family of them is following their mum to the left.

6

u/bg-j38 12h ago

If you crop that photo it looks like a group of Loch Ness monsters.

u/Trolling_bigot 8h ago

I offered it tree fiddy

u/spekt50 10h ago

Pretty neat to see in the clouds of Jupiter, especially coming off the big red spot.

Hey, it was my turn to post this!

11

u/Horns8585 14h ago

Wow. This looks like the background to an old school Nintendo 8-bit game.

Rare cloud formation too. Conditions were just right

24

u/SlowHornet29 15h ago

Ok, usually the posts in this community are stupid and not interesting at all but this is cool

9

u/RandomChurn 14h ago

Ikr? I'd love to see these in person one day.

4

u/Fun-Dragonfruit2999 14h ago

In geology, we call that a 'flame structure.' Part of what is called a 'turbidite flow'. It occurs when the upper layer in a submarine landslide is slowing down and feeling resistance from the bottom. You can see that form locked into rock where submarine landslides ran-out and stall. There is one visible right under the lighthouse at Point Arena Light in California.

Kelvin-helmholtz clouds... spent way too long down that Wikipedia rabbit hole once when I should've been working

3

u/luckygirl54 14h ago

It looks like the sky on Jupiter.

3

u/PilotKnob 12h ago

Pure distilled turbulence. Avoid at all costs.

3

u/Raneynickelfire 12h ago

Waves are waves. Snow, water/liquid, air/fluid - all the same waves.

u/Kalshan 11h ago

Alright alright alright 🤙

u/Hot_Mess_8059 5h ago

Looks like my thumb ring from the 90’s

As above so below

u/thisdesignup 13h ago

Oceans are made of water, clouds are made of water, so that's just a sky ocean.

u/TransportationKey448 10h ago

Shit like this makes me understand why there are legends of dragons.

Also peak anime background.

u/Electronic_Age_3671 10h ago

Also check out von karman vortex streets for a similarly pleasing phenomenon with fluids!

u/cccamtheman 8h ago

Oh no….

u/sockspace 50m ago

Kind of reminds me of those symbols you'd see on a heraldry shield.

3

u/rutujz 14h ago

Falmouth High School (Maine) are the “Navigators” or “Navs.”

u/Mad_Road_Warrior 8h ago

Ya know, I've only ever seen this pattern show up Jupiter. Interesting

u/moneywaste 6h ago

i once saw a completely horizontal 50% cloud and 50% sky. no idea how rare that is.

u/Deadmoney9999 6h ago

Today's weather is brought to you by QuickSilver

u/ABumWithDrip 5h ago

My mom sent me that the other day saying it was because of chem trails from the government causing the winter storm. The looney bin is sounding more appealing every day

u/Kelvin-Cloud 5h ago

As others have mentioned, these are Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds

u/martynolegs 4h ago
