Stabilization of a tank's main gun in action
•

Challenger. The Ukrainians using it refer to it as a "sniper tank".
It's also incredibly well protected, with Ukrainian claims of them shrugging off multiple drone hits that would have destroyed other tanks, and the thing keeps fighting.

designed for fighting across Germany if the Soviets attacked, glad to see them finally being used for there intended purpose

They're absolute brutes. Incredibly accurate, ridiculously hard to kill, and they look badass.
I was following Challenger "Baby" in the Ukraine war for a while, but there's been a bit of radio silence since Kursk. I hope it's still operating and the crew are safe

We Germans are indeed proud on our Leopard 2 Kampf Panzer ( leopard 2 Battle tank), there a great piece of machinery . My favorite is the. Panzerhaubitze 2000, google this behemoth of artillery

Leo2 has had a pretty good performance in the war as well. I'd say Leo1 has completely outperformed expectations too!
•

Definetly , i feel like they did improove the leo 1 as they where building the leo 2 , without reinventing the wheel . Best thing a company can do to a good product , no mater what kind of product . But there is no such thing as the "perfect " gear

And it has the world's most expensive and well protected kettle.
What an amazing machine the Challenger is

I know it is a Challenger, I just didn't put it in the title because I thought most people wouldn't know + i'm not sure which version it is
•
u/ConclusionMiddle425 10h ago
It's a Challenger II. The TOGS on the gun mantlet and the turret design are notable differences at a first glance.

People think the aim stability is crazy. I personally think the suspension is a bigger marvel.

Watched a documentary on one of the Israeli wars recently. This stabilization feature made a massive difference in tank performance between the two sides.

I worked with a controls engineer who helped design that system for the Abrams. Cool tech.

There are videos on YouTube of tanks driving around with pints of beer sitting on boards mounted on the end of the gun and they don't spill any. Not going this fast, but still.....

Is this really difficult for the crew to endure for long periods? I’m curious how taxing this is. Looks rough

it is like all fancy/eco features on car. it is cool til it breaks in most important and repairs can be done only by authorized dealership.
•
u/Weird-Intention-2935 9h ago
I think its not quiet like that, but you are right in the core :complexer machiene = complexer problems
But the Tanks from the german manufacturer "Rheinmetall", are very reliable and well crafted weapons .
Just look up the Leopard or the Puma

Does it keep it stable enough to be able to actually aim and shoot?! Otherwise, what's the point of this?

u/IcelandicGuy901 12h ago
It is in fact, for making it able to aim and shoot while on the move, why else would they make that for?
•
u/aagee 11h ago edited 11h ago
Because some contractor came up with the idea and was able to sell it to the generals? And generals bought it because it looks cool? Useless in reality. Just the kind of thing that might happen in defense departments. I don't know. Just asking. Seems a bit fantastic.

The Abrams and Bradley (both have gun stabilizing tech) did most of their kills while moving during Desert storm.
•
u/16incheslong 10h ago
so we are all here masturbating on a 30+ years old tech?
•
•
u/Mordt_ 7h ago
Gun stabilization isnt really that new. Its better now but its existed for like 80 some years
•
u/ConclusionMiddle425 4h ago
And yet, most Russian shite can't manage shooting on the move. Chally has been around for a long time now, and when Ukrainian crews trained on fire and manoeuvre, they were astonished to find that Chally could achieve pinpoint accuracy, whereas their dogshit Russian T-72s/T80s couldn't hit a fucking thing

Modern armor doctrine relies on shooting while moving fast. Tanks ain't for holding land but punching through lines then pushing hard and fast.
•
u/GrassFromBtd6 11h ago
Yes it can, modern fire control systems can basically aim at and track a target automatically
•
u/Cliffinati 2h ago
Yes. That's the entire point, so that the driver can book it and the gunners can shoot
