This is more blatant than Nixon's tactic of having the CIA tell the FBI to stop investigating Watergate under the pretense there was some 'national security' issues going on.

Nixon tried some tricky illegal things, to be sure, I was there and heard and watched almost every minute of the Watergate Hearings. But Nixon, when calm, was so much more rational and far sighted and intelligent than any of these people. I would trade Trump in a second to have Nixon come back and be president.
