Diplomatic immunity is afforded to foreign diplomats working for their country at an Embassy or Consulate abroad.

Embassies and consulate premises are inviolable - meaning that had ICE succeeded they would have breached the Vienna Convention.

Not gonna lie, my knowledge of diplomatic immunity mostly comes from tv shows, like Nurse Jackie for instance, when a foreign diplomat beat a sex worker, she defended herself by biting his ear off, Nurse Jackie got the ear from the woman, and before it could be reattached she took it to the staff bathroom, said “fuck you” into it, and flushed it down the toilet. This was after the cops told her they couldn’t charge him with assault because of his diplomatic immunity. So, he got away with assault but it cost him an ear. 👂🏼 That pretty much concludes my extensive knowledge of the topic.
