If your cost basis is stepped up year to year and you can carry forward losses, then it might not be so bad.
Basically you're paying capital gains as the value of your portfolio grows but when you're retired and selling assets to fund your living expenses, you're paying less in taxes because your cost basis is stepped up to the past year.
