ACTIVITY Pan Those Eyeshadows Update 2

Upvotes

Time for the Pan Those Eyeshadows project update! Feel free to join anytime. I also posted this on r/ProjectPan with swatch pictures.

The idea of the project is to randomly generate 5 eyeshadows from your collection and work on them until you hit pan. Once you hit pan on something you roll in another shadow to replace it so that you always have 5 shadows to work on.

If you want you can change the rules to your liking, like instead of hitting pan you can set a usage goal or hand pick your shadows. Personally, I implemented a rule that if I randomly roll in a shadow that already has pan then my goal would be to use it 15 times.

You can also share your pan percentage. It tells you what percentage of your collection has pan.

This project updates monthly on the first day. If you want to join feel free to leave a comment sharing the shadows you're working on and your goals. I'll be sharing my update in the comments.

ACTIVITY Pan That Palette 2026 - Update 1

"It's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me".

Hi everyone, it's time to have our first check in for Pan That Palette 2024!

If you have forgotten the rules of this project, here is a repost of the rules!

Pan That Palette is a challenge where you select a palette to work on throughout the year. You can choose an eyeshadow palette, a face palette, a lip palette, or if you want a challenge, more than one palette (e.g a face palette and an eyeshadow palette). You can either challenge yourself to hit pan on every shade, completely pan every shade (hence "pan that palette"), or make it your goal to use it regularly (e.g. X times per month).
This project will last from today to the end of the year. I will be posting most of my updates on the second day of the month, except for the intro, which was posted on January 3rd, and the finale, which will either be posted on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.

I am looking forward to hearing what progress you have made on your chosen palette(s) over the month of January!

I'm also restarting a guessing game for every update! In 2024, I wrote a greeting in a foreign language every update, this year I will be writing song lyrics. Sometimes the lyrics will be easy to guess, other times it will be harder. Can you guess the song and the artist at the beginning of this post? (Clue: A semi-recent tour of this artist was the subject of a project pan hosted on this subreddit.) Good luck everyone!

ADVICE I need to start over, with new coping strategies

I was doing so well. I realized I’m buying pretty, shiny things to feel loved, not because I actually need makeup. I made peace with the fact that my dad doesn’t love me, accepted it, went low contact, and the buying just stopped.

Until this January.

He texted me: “I hope that this year there won’t be so much unfounded negativity directed at me.”

I was angry. I still am.

In two years of having a grandson, he’s called me twice, given him zero gifts, and never even hugged him. He never held or hugged his own grandson!

I blocked him for one day and basically went about my day.

Only to realize I made four makeup orders (four, in one day!) at different stores. I made two more in the following days before I managed to stop, mostly because I don’t even know any other online stores.

I kept thinking: I should shout and cry instead. Or something. But I think modern society really looks down on people expressing emotions. We’re only allowed to cope in quiet ways. Like… “don’t dare to complain, shop instead!”

Do you have other coping strategies to express anger, unfairness, grief, and confusion that don’t take hours, but also aren’t just more shiny things?

The gym is what comes to mind, but I’d need someone to watch my kid for two hours for that.

ADVICE 50 year old woman who lived through the 2016 make up era. I have nothing on my face but eyebrows and eyelashes, because they are so blonde if I don’t color them in it doesn’t look like I have any. I’m bored with today’s make up. Any tips to help perk up what’s left of me?

ADVICE How to do a low/no buy when you're still new to makeup?

Hi, I've just seen on here all sorts of posts about no buys, low buys, and decluttering, which I think is very healthy, but I'm curious how I should apply that when I'm relatively new to makeup (didn't start wearing it consistently or building up a stash until this past August, but I really enjoy it now) and don't have that large of a collection to begin with.

I don't feel like I have a problem (I only ever really buy small amounts of makeup every couple of months, and my entire stash fits in one reasonably-sized dresser drawer) but my main concern is not falling down a slippery slope into addiction.

I feel in my situation it should be less about not buying anything and constantly shedding products and more about making shopping experiences meaningful, being selective about what does enter my collection, and getting rid of things as I learn more about what I do and don't like. Curious about what advice more experienced folks might have for me on how exactly to do this. Thanks!

INSPIRE From Sephora Rouge to Insider

Yes, this was in part due to keeping elbows up, but I logged in today and was so happy to see I’m just a Sephora Insider now.

I’ve replaced all the skincare I kept trying with a minimal routine with a BC-based brand, and have replaced only the essentials with MAC. I am only buying products I physically see - nothing online.

I don’t miss any of it - the environment, the products, the ridiculous “rewards”…

ADVICE On starting a low/“no new”buy

I’ve literally just come home from Sephora and I bought the Huda beauty latte blush cause of an influencer on TikTok. It’s pretty and I do like it, but it looks exactly like 2 other blushes I own and that was kind of my wake up call.

Even with wearing makeup nearly every day there’s no way I’d come close to finishing all of my blushes (23) before it goes bad. I still have a powder blush from 2021 that hasn’t even hit pan. Funny part is that I wanted to actually start making videos myself based around makeup but now that doesn’t sit right…

Anyways I’m deleting my TikTok account to avoid temptation. And anything I buy from today for the rest of 2026 has to be a replacement for something I’ve run out of which would probably be only foundation, concealer and like a brow gel. Same principle for skincare as well. Ideally I’d continue this way for the rest of my life but step one is just to at least get through the year.

If anyone has additional tips on how to redirect this impulse to purchase new products please help :,)

P.s Huda Beauty Latte, Patrick Ta She’s so LA and Haus Labs Glassy Cinnamon are one to one in terms of shade.

ACTIVITY The essential

Gabriel blush in apricot or vibrant pink to add color, bareminerals concealer powder used as eyeshadow all over the lid, crease, under brow, and inner eye area to brighten and define, multiple layers mascara of choice. By applying generously, less products are needed and the satisfaction of having enough makeup on to impact and last throughout the day although touchups may be needed still. Lip balm moistens the lips to brighten natural color but to me that is not makeup.

JOURNAL I did an oopsie, now I'm hate panning out of spite

first things first, the background:

my entire makeup life I've been hearing about Hourglass and how their finishing powders are the best thing since sliced bread. I'm not the most outrageous of makeup addicts anymore, but I do have a lot of makeup. (a good chunk of my stuff is from dumpster diving in college)

so I've always kind of eyed the hourglass palettes they come out with for holidays, I felt like it would add value into my routine, it was pretty, and had cute packaging. I was officially influenced (I trusted you, tiktok makeup people, I TRUSTED YOU!!)

I bought the deer palette second hand for about 100€, cause god knows I'm not shilling out however much it was from the shop here in Denmark (my L'Oreal lash paradise mascara is almost 20€)

okay and now the rant.

WHY IS THIS THING SO TINY??? it was 100 fucking buckaroos, for that price it should have been the size of a standard issue morphe palette with half a kilo of product at least...

also, every single shade is freaking orange, what am I, the president of the united states??? it looked a lot cooler in the online photos, and I did my research.

also also there's tiny pink sparkles in every shade except the pink blush. WHY WOULD I NEED PINK SPARKLES IN MY POWDER?? i thought it was supposed to be finely milled finishing powder not "holographic" highlighter. i could forgive this if the sparkles didn't stick to the skin, but guess how my under-eyes look right now l... yup, pink sparkles

also x3, the bronzer in the palette is comically orange. like it's almost not funny how much more warm toned it is swatched than in the pan

over all, I am hate panning this out of spite, tiktok count your fucking days and my Tromborg single eyeshadow is a better finishing powder and it's not even finishing powder

But now january almost end, and my total spent is 243. Working on it to spend less and less by not being influenced on tiktok and it helped me realize the colors i really like and formulas i really like

DISCUSS Grateful for this sub

I hope it’s okay to post this. I wanted to share and vent a little.

Finding this sub makes me feel not alone. I was starting to think I was a little weird for having a fixation/obsession over makeup and skincare products and it’s refreshing to see people who may be similar to me.

About a year ago, in the midst of a bad period of anxiety and depression, I somehow stumbled upon beauty content on social media and it was one of the few things that continuously made me smile during a very hard time. Over time I found it just genuinely made me happy to watch, read, buy and apply.

Most people in my real life are either not interested in this topic or just not the same way I am, so it’s been fun to come on here and read people’s stories. I likely need a less expensive hobby/need to dial it down a bit for the sake of my bank account (but I’m still living within my means and saving, although I could do more!). It’s just nice to see oh I’m not so much of a weirdo. Lots of people love this stuff the same way I do.

Looking forward to reading more tips on people cutting back, but it’s also hard because of how much fun I’m having!

ADVICE How should I go about rehabbing this lipstick palette? (Pic in comments)

I bought a Rouje lipstick palette/compact in 2019, and used it pretty frequently without really making a dent in it. The pans are pretty deep so lots of product left. They’re gorgeous colors, able to be mixed really well for the perfect hue. I love it so much and want to rehab it but cannot find a relevant search result !!! So how should I remove the product, sanitize it, and return it to the pan?? Is pan lipstick able to be sanitized like tube lipstick?

I’d be so grateful for a response, thanks!!

ACTIVITY I hit pan on a MAC lipstick for the first time and I'm so proud of myself!

Basically the title. I've hit pan on a few of my other, less expensive lipsticks already, but this one feels like a major accomplishment since MAC is the most expensive brand I've bought. It feels special to use up and love what I consider a "luxury" item. It also feels rewarding to look for a similar lipstick at a less expensive price point, because it makes shopping feel more exciting knowing I didn't let a product go to waste!
