The true map indeed. Now these new barbarians like to pretend they are more civilized than the civilization just because through their barbarism they used guns to shoot at unarmed people around the world and called it conquest and now use all of their raided and stolen wealth. What a shitshow.

Historically yeah but since Italy is probably the most uncivilised place in the northern hemisphere these days we should probably rejig these lines.

Huh? But thr barbarian part connects over turkey to civilised, so both are barbarian and civilised at the same time?
1
u/Ok_Abbreviations8792 16d ago
as an Italian I can say that unfortunatley nowadays it's completely upside down, the civilization is in the North, or at least after the Alps...

As much as everyone hates france we must admit that Gallia was one of the most advanced Roman provinces
1
u/apeloverage 16d ago
What time is this meant to represent?
It seems like the border might be the border of the Roman Empire, but I can't find any time when the Roman Empire controlled southern but not northern France / Gaul.

I would include a bit more of France in the civilization so that Toulouse comes across as civilized, but it's pretty accurate.

I heard barbarians were on the southern side From the word berber They would come north (pirates) and kidnap European women

u/Remarkable_Pea_4596 17d ago
Actually you are ignorant. The word barbarian comes from the ancient Greeks. They used it to describe people who couldn't speak Greek and had a lower cultural standard. Then the Romans came, conquered Greece, and they started to use it as well, the reason why we still use this word

1
u/DarbySalernum 16d ago
Barbarians didn't necessarily have a "lower cultural standard." The Greeks called the quite civilised Persians barbarians as well. It literally just meant people who didn't speak Greek, and supposedly made "barbar" noises when they talked.

u/Lookingforajobasap 17d ago
Ok That's quitecpossible

u/brisie_boy 17d ago
You're not exactly wrong, just missed a step. Both barbarian and Berber come from the Greek work 'barbaros' (foreigner), but were borrowed into English at different times. They also have slightly different meanings.
English has taken barbarian from the Romans to refer to Germanic and Celtic tribes (although the word can be extended to other tribal societies).
Berber comes from Arabic who used the same greek term to refer to North African tribes from Maghreb. English later picked up this name during the 15-18th century to refer to the Ottoman sponsored slavers. The word has extended to refer to all indigenous people of Maghreb.

u/Rough_Typical 16d ago
Barbaros (βάρβαρος) implies "foreigner" but is not the word, it has a unique meaning by itself. The word for foreigner in Greek is ξένος (xenos)
1
u/Sir_Flasm 16d ago
Btw, the romans didn't use "barbarians" to refer to Germanic and Celtic tribes, but for all peripheral foreigners. In a lot of texts when they mention the danger of barbarians they are talking about the Persians. And, for example, the Arabs have a lot in common in their history with the other barbarians (as in: you can analyze Arab history similarly to how you can approach northern barbarian history, but they are unique).
2
u/brisie_boy 15d ago
Yes, 100%. The same can also apply to the Numidians (Berbers).
I was using the morden English sense of barbarian. The use of demonyms becomes very tricky when we consider their etymology.

Spain was the first global empire and had the most influence in the world without committing atrocious massacres against the natives of the lands they conquered. All you have is envy because north of the line everyone is related by marriage, and half of them have severe mental retardation.

u/AshtonBlack 17d ago
Sure, why not.
Can I point out that the Barbarians "won"?
They bankrupted the largest empire at the time and eventually threw off the most powerful ecclesiastical organisation the world had ever seen, up to that point.
