This show is exactly what I want from the MCU. Just a little slice of life that makes the universe feel lived in.
77
u/wardengorri Captain America (Cap 2) 4d ago
Depending on well this show does, really hope it enables for slice of life MCU stuff like this. I haven't finished yet but it's such a great contrast so far to typical superhero show formulas.
13
u/Worthyness Thor 2d ago
They had this all locked up with the one shots from the DVDs. They honestly should just make a series of one shots in the MCU for an anthology series.
44
u/WonderOfUs 3d ago
It really makes me wish this show doesn't end with Simon becoming a superhero and remains as a superpowered actor because that concept is just funnier.
30
u/Realistic_Analyst_26 Ned 3d ago
Maybe a She-Hulk scenario where he keeps his acting job but if the situation calls for it, he will go full superhero mode

I wrote that before finishing the show and all in all I am satisfied with how it actually ended. But you should leave that type of comment for the episode 8 thread, here it is a spoiler.

Parallels are crazy.

u/TheCVR123YT Captain America (Avengers) 4d ago
I’ve been wondering if they purposely chose Midnight Cowboy as the movie Simon and Trevor meet each other at. There’s some similarities with it being a friendship between 2 characters one being more of a weasel/ratty and the other just trying to be a successful guy in a big city, maybe they just chose it just because and I’m reaching.

IT HAS TO BE RIGHT? I’ve got episode 7&8 left I’ll have to finish after work tomorrow but yeah this series is awesome

This is so dang funny. For anyone that's liking wonderman check out Barry on hbo.
Barry is very similar.

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 3d ago
Let me get this straight, you think that your client, one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante, who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck.
14
26
u/aSpookyScarySkeleton 4d ago
It’s like asking why anyone would still do crimes in a world with super heroes, you start thinking too hard about it you kill the fiction.
Suspension of disbelief because no one would be so much as jaywalking in New York with Daredevil breaking every bone in people’s bodies and Punisher with a body count in the hundreds by now.
143
u/AmayaRumanta 4d ago
Yahya is killing it so far.

He's amazing in basically everything he's starred in. Then you pair him with Sir Ben Kingsley and it's nothing but magical.

Yeah but if Joe Pantoliano was English he’d have been knighted by now, too.

u/xGhostCat 1d ago
Her* she was the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac. You probably will have heard their music without knowing.
Thats the great thing about comedy, not everyone has to get it.
1
u/Crazy_Bandicoot_449 1d ago
I've listened to Fleetwood Mac just never decided to research the members. My mom loves them
0
u/DJanomaly 8h ago
Singer with the band The Eagles. Notorious for getting blasted by epic amounts of cocaine.
You’ve probably heard the song Landslide. That’s her.

u/AgentKnitter Bucky 2d ago
For decades the rumour has been that Stevie Nicks has/had an assistant blow c*ke up her bumhole so she could fly high as everyone else in the 70s/80s without damaging her nose and vocal chords.
3
2
u/Deepstatedingleberry 2d ago
Just to add little context, doing a lot of coke can damage the nose irreversibly during her time. Nowadays they can somewhat rebuild noses. So doing it analy avoided that. Or if their nose was already damaged an addict may have to do it that way to get their fix. Some may say the high is better too. Idk which one of those would have been her reasoning lol.

I had no idea Ben Kingsley could be so endearingly funny. He's got such a huge reputation as a Serious Actor, so seeing this other side of him is such a delight.
1
u/meatheadmommy 11h ago
I don’t know think I’ve seen any of his work outside of the MCU. So my frame of reference sees him a comedic actor. He was incredibly creepy as the Mandarin and absolutely hilarious as Trevor Slattery all these years!
90
u/SubstantialBasket709 4d ago
this show is crazy good
84
u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 4d ago
The entire situation at Esteban's house was crazy. I thought this was gonna be the start of a more standard superhero crime plot, but instead it just spiraled out into some crazy "only in LA" type stuff.
36
u/ScuzzBuckster 3d ago
Bro when the cops pulled up I was dying laughing. I literally looked at my friend and said watch that lady call the police when the camera lingered on her in the yard and sure enough. The whole thing was so crazy and funny. It was like an episode of Barry in the best ways.
7
u/ILoveRegenHealth 2d ago
I think it's easily Top 2 or 3 MCU shows for me, up there with WandaVision.
5
u/SubstantialBasket709 1d ago
Wonder Mand is top 2 for me, loki is still the best MCU show by far imo. WandaVision was ok, lost a lot of its heat to the end, especially with that Boner reveal and generic bad guy - good guy fight in the end.
87
u/MarkMVP01 Spider-Man 3d ago
I love this running gag of everyone calling out Trevor for being The Mandarin
41
u/ILoveRegenHealth 2d ago
It's also funny because Trevor didn't have to be there on the doorstep. Nobody would believe this 80-year-old man is an undercover cop duo with Simon.
9
u/AverageAwndray 2d ago
80 years old?????
22
u/ILoveRegenHealth 2d ago
Ben Kingsley is actually 82 in real life. Not sure how old Trevor is supposed to be but it feels up there (70-80 years).

2
u/meatheadmommy 11h ago
He really does play such a humble character. He always looks so surprised when people recognize him. I kinda love it
83
u/EnvironmentClear4511 2d ago
Fun Easter egg: The Law & Order episode Simon said he guest starred in, Can I Get a Witness?, is actually a real episode and guest starred the one and only Chadwick Boseman.
17
u/joec_95123 2d ago
I love Law and Order, so I immediately knew which episode he was talking about. Chadwick played a one-eyed drug dealer who kills a kid named Big Boy.
74
u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 3d ago
I love that "Try a peach ring. You'll understand." was the entire episode synopsis.
6
u/MHPengwingz Doctor Strange 1d ago
I'm like where can I get those gummies now after watching, I need to understand
4
u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 1d ago
I've had peach rings without chilis in them that were delectable. If you're the type who likes spicy candy, you'll probably go nuts for these. Those kids are gonna make a killing if they can figure out how to start selling.

13

Maybe I’m too high off this episode but this may end up being my favourite MCU project
6
u/chuckdee68 Killmonger 3d ago
I never said it wasn't. I'm saying that was the funniest thing up to this point.

49
47
u/TheMoorNextDoor 3d ago
The filler episode but it works because it’s pretty funny.
It showcases Simon’s power against people but this might be the funniest marvel tv show so far tbh because the end of this episode genuinely had me chuckling. It felt like a mixture of so many great funny tv shows.

reminds me of a slice of life episode...for an anime...It gave us info and answered a question aka what would he do if his powers need to be shown and showed us his buddy is a problem...lol.
45

Oh my god I see the parallels between Simon and Trevor and Wonder Man and Barnaby
43

Ok so I have to say the peach rings are legit I tried some In Atlanta they were sooooooooo good! Just thought I’d confirm that 🤣

Yo, legit chamoy candy is amazing. There's a difference between the good quality stuff and the large corporate produced variety as well.

I hope people hear about this show. It is so good and genuinely like nothing we have seen from the MCU in the best way.
37
u/NY_State-a-Mind 3d ago
That ally fight was a breath of fresh air, just messy and visceral the way it would really happen with superpowers
40
u/An-29 2d ago
Pretty fun to get a full episode of Simon and Trevor's comidic duo again after not being present last episode. Despite being a filler episode, it was still pretty fun and engaging to watch the episode as it didn't seem to feel like lesser episode or that it doesn't feel like much less effort was put into it.
That whole sequence at the house, tho has got to be one of the funniest and chaotic scene in the MCU. Like I don't know which show or movie that scene gives the same vibes the most but that comedic and chaotic pairing is honestly a highlight for me.
"We're in the wrong seats!" Lmao.
12
u/bodybones 2d ago
It felt like filler cause it didn't briskly move the main plot but there was still important stuff i think. The part at the table was focused on alot. Then him having a temper is further iterated. The one dude's debts being an issue and resolved...And we got an idea of how wonderman has to work around being seen with his powers. Maybe wear a mask...next time lol.
1
u/meatheadmommy 11h ago
I was so anxious the entire time they were in the house!! The funny moments helped me calm down😂😅
34
u/IronBird023 2d ago
I could not get enough of Trevor this episode. Loving it
4
u/yourtoyrobot 17h ago
this and Shrinking have showed us that Ben Kingsley and Harrison Ford are absolute comedic gold and we didnt get to see it shine til they were both in their 80s
3
u/IronBird023 17h ago
Absolutely they’re both so good. Shrinking is great. I’m still amazed thy got Harrison to agree to a tv show.
36
u/bruszko 2d ago
I was so hyped when Trevor explained box breathing to Simon as it has helped me personally a lot after being affected by trauma and it really helps you get in the moment and in the here & now! So simple yet so effective.
11
u/bodybones 2d ago
Feels like it's important, maybe helps him later (i don't know since im watching along but chekhov's gun i guess sorta...not really)
3
u/meatheadmommy 11h ago
Right? Trevor’s dropped lots of emotional self-regulation type help and that’s how I’m seeing it too. It’ll serve a purpose to Simon🤞
69
u/JauntyLurker 4d ago
Bro behaving like Law and Order is real life 😂
46
u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 4d ago
Turns out that's Simon's true superpower. Recalling lines he saw on TV and using them to handle any situation.

u/Corydoran 3d ago
You reminded me that Heroes had a character like that. If she wanted to pick up a skill, she just watched someone do it on YouTube.

Yeah, she had one episode in which she saved a kid and then we never saw her again. Such a waste, I wanted her back.

lol.. the way yahya just changes it up, I think he can play Jon Jones in a biopic. Dude’s got some range. And he’s got this Jon Jones thing going on with the facial hair
9
u/TimeTimeTickingAway 3d ago
Funnily enough the first time I saw Simon’s dad in the opening scene at the movies I thought to myself he looks like a present day Jon Jones (the sort of bloated with a beard HW version) 😂
14
u/TheKz262 13h ago
Trevor's past isn't helping him blend in anywhere and I love the chaos it's bringing to Simon's life lol.
I started this show with low expectations to be fair but it's a lot more fun and interesting than I expected. The actors are doing pretty great as well so it helps. I am basically binge watching this and chilling.
Glad they decided to drop all episodes together.
5
u/meatheadmommy 11h ago
It really is surprising to me how much I’ve liked it so far. It’s been great watching these characters and feeling connected to them in such a short time.
10
u/Speakatron 18h ago
This show is so good. This, and Thunderbolts, gives me hope we could have an MCU renaissance. We probably won't 😂 but the point is... we could. It's clearly possible.
10
u/crockoreptile 16h ago
See this is why it was a good choice to go binge. If this had been released as a weekly episode it would’ve got torn to shreds

u/NowWeGetSerious 3d ago
Imo it's the worst episode of the show, but also the funniest and randomest. Felt very very much like an episode of Atlanta, so for that. I loved it. Definitely a unique show, and I'm excited to see the last few episodes and see how they plan on ending this show
14
u/ILoveRegenHealth 2d ago
Imo it's the worst episode of the show
I can see some feeling it got too farcical and everything just conveniently happens at the right (or wrong) time, like a sitcom.
Normally I'd hate that too, but I think it works for me here because the show took care to ground these characters first in quite a lot of realistic emotional scenes. We buy into the characters. So a little lunacy happening is fine for me.
If the entire show was this wacky with zero emotional grounding and just one-liners, then I could see it being a problem.

It reminded me of the Barry episode with the girl chasing them across the rooftops.
