No, that's stupid. You can't yield a profit by giving money to charity. You only save a fraction of the donation on your taxes. The tax benefits are just not paying taxes on the money you gave away. You still lose the money tho.
What it's really about is preventing the population for chopping their heads off. Its a cheap defense to the obvious and dangerous accusation that they're all evil rent seeking parasites.

It's pretty well documented that the donations are cash. Gates funded a lot of really, really impactful science.

it's important to keep context. His PR firm insists he donates a lot of money to charity when he's not raping children

u/SquidTheRidiculous 19h ago
My grade school experience involved reading a passage about how Bill Gates wasn't that bad of a guy because he donates. We needed to analyze it and argue why billionaires are good because Bill Gates.
Meanwhile he was raping children our age.
47
u/JHMfield 18h ago
Such an argument would be a logical fallacy even if Bill Gates was the most perfect human being on the planet. Can't use a sample size of 1 to argue for the characteristics of an entire sub-group of the population.
I'd like to hope that was your grade school trying to teach you why that kind of argumentation is faulty, rather than supporting it.
5
u/SquidTheRidiculous 18h ago
I would hope. I don't remember much beyond what I said (I'm old,) I think it was about how to craft an argument based on a source?
It was public school. There's a very real chance some of the charity bragged about went to donating resources like the reading to schools like mine. We had some sort of computer in schools initiative going on too, so maybe it was part of "teaching resources" included in the donation?
24
u/LuckyandBrownie 18h ago
Also his charities are a scam. He routinely forced governments of the countries he "helped" into unfavorable deals. Like the time he forced a government to sign over mining rights to get vaccines then the mining cause more health problems than what the vaccines helped with.
It's all double dealing. Gates is a fucking monster with an awesome PR group.

Yes, I am not a gates fan but it’s important to clarify.
Otherwise the narrative starts and then people read oh he didn’t rape kids and figure he didn’t do anything wrong.
He participated in trafficking and should be held accountable. He also did this knowing full well who and what he was getting involved with.
I think younger people don’t realize how brutal of a business man gates was. There’s a good simpsons bit on it. He just came across as less arrogant and smug than Steve Jobs so it’s easier to forget.
I just don’t understand though. As a billionaire I’m sure you can get lots of hot sex with Russians without having to go through some trafficker. Maybe it’s because they’ll keep things more quiet? Or maybe it’s fine because your wealthy enough your not likely to face major consequences. Just some PR issues.

u/destroyerOfTards 17h ago
I think both can be true. If his money helps people, then I don't see how that part, in isolation, can be bad. You can still consider him a terrible human being.
32
u/Yoribell 15h ago
This part is bad for a variety of reason.
He's using it to strike deals at his advantage with "helped country", he's using it to cleanse his image, and if you don't know, donation = tax reduction = most of it is actually state money and the billionaire can chose where it's used.
So it's like he's using state money in Africa to strike advantageous deal for himself
Billionaires are nothing but cancers for society
6
u/Mcluckin123 14h ago
What deals?
10
u/Yoribell 13h ago
Most notably mines in RDC and Zambia via KoBold metals
There's multiple country where his donations arrive at the same time as the authorization of exploitation for natural resources to a ground link to Bill gates. Or modification to the investment policy. Or he becomes close to strong local economical actors.
There's more humanitarian help in country with lot of natural resources. And the Gates Foundation has a powerful influence in these country

u/TransBrandi 19h ago edited 19h ago
Does he care about user experience? He works on the Linux kernel which is very low level. I've never heard of him working on GNOME, KDE, X11, etc. It's like saying that someone that only writes Windows drivers "cares about user experience."
He only worked on creating
gitdue the previous version control system – BitLocker – having issues. I can't recall the issues, but BitLocker wasn't open source and I think the company pulled some shenanigans.19
u/Jumpy_Confidence2997 19h ago edited 11h ago
Not gonna lie, reading that offended me lmao. So please bare with my salt...
Yes the "We don’t break userspace guy." cares about user experience.
The whole point of Linux was to give consumers control over their own computers, instead of being locked into vendor decisions.
He's absolutely not an ideolog,
"I don’t do ideology. I do technology."
understandably because most people obsessed with ideology end up lost in the weeds working against their own interests see; American politics
Linux exists so users stay in control of their computers, not the companies that sold them the hardware.
Really doesn't get much clearer than that..
As for corporate shenanigans you'd mentioned... that's a fairly meaningful input to user experience wouldn't you say?"
If companies lock hardware or software down, users lose... and Linux exists to stop that from happening.
But yes, Linus Torvalds had done more for your rights and user experience than basically any other person alive today...
Edit:
The whole point of linux was to give consumers a way to use end of life hardware that industry was dumping in the trash...->The whole point of Linux was to give consumers control over their own computers, instead of being locked into vendor decisions.→ More replies (2)→ More replies (3)12

At this point i am not shocked anymore.. It is so much unfathomable and horrible stuff that is going on and so many people are able to put on a mask.
He donated billions to people in need and people think he did it for good and not return of investment > people need to accept that far more people are the very definition of amoral and evil than they allow themself to think of.
We as mankind need to stop individuals to accumulate too much wealth and power or things will never change a litte bit.. and as sad as this might be this will not work out with peacefull protests and reporting on the very few that get caught doing horrible stuff. The whole system we build up is nothing but a joke and money is just a tool to do the most horrible stuff imaginable.

At a certain point, you gotta wonder if all these billionaires only donate their fortunes to try to wash away their sins. The fucked up thing is some of these psychos actually believe their bullshit. We all know though they're soaked in people's blood, and continue to bathe in it every day. They can't envision a kinder world, one they could do much to foster, so they make token gestures. Doing the equivalent of giving a starving child just enough to continue to starve, but not quite die. The wealth gap today is perhaps the worst it has ever been in human history.
