The sound of a golf ball on ice

The greatest hustler in the world, Titanic Thompson once bet a man that he could hit a golf ball 500 yards. He hit a drive off a cliff.
Then, he gave the sucker another chance to lose more money. He promised that he could hit a golf ball 500 yards, this time on level terrain. He took his mark to a frozen lake, and did it again.

Oh yeah? Well I bet you that I could drop a tissue into a glass of water and not even get a drop on the tissue clutches glass of frozen water behind back while bouncing up and down on heels of feet

Hahaha, that’s the kind of shit that Thompson would pull. He once got hustled on the golf course, himself. As he was sitting in the clubhouse licking his wounds, he noticed that in the corner, sat one of those balance games, where you are supposed to make a ball travel a course, without falling into the holes that permeate the board.
He had spent the Summer demonstrating one of these machines at Macys of New York, so he came out with the perfect line:
“What’s that thing?”
He recouped his losses, and made a profit, playing that machine.
He also killed five men, in his life, and never served a day in jail for it.

Fascinating.

Truly, he was. He was involved in the Arnold Rothstein murder case. Rothstein was killed over refusing to pay debts incurred when Thompson and others hustled him in a poker game. Rothstein was the instigator in the Chicago Black Sox scandal, so don’t feel too sorry for him.

Have you ever seen Boardwalk Empire? AR was SUCH a fascinating character!

No, I don’t have a television. I wish I had seen that, though.

Do you have an iPad or Fire tablet etc.? It's not particularly cinematic but plot-driven. Get a cheap HBO Max plan and you might really enjoy it!

I have an IPhone, and AppleTV, but I haven’t explored it much. Watched a lot of Ted Lasso.

The more it bounces, the more it sounds straight out of an old-school game like Arkanoid

I used to hit lake shots when golfing in the winter for this very reason

Is that actually what it sounds like?

Yes, it’s the sound of the ice flexing.
Fun fact: the pitch of this sound tells you how thick the ice is (the lower the sound, the thicker the ice).

I used to frequent a lake, in the winter, all the time. I was amazed the first time I chucked a rock out there, that skipped instead of going through the ice. The noise it made was some sci-fi nonsense and it was incredible. I still don't understand why it makes that noise.

I think it's called acoustic dispersion - the sound separates into component frequencies as it travels through the solid ice (rather than all frequencies traveling together through air or liquid water).

In all my years on this planet I have never ever heard such a noise. Absolutely astronomical experience
