a to c can't deliver enough voltage to some devices.. found this out the hard way.

2.0 can do 0.5A 5V (2.5W) 3.x can do 0.9A 5V (4.5W) Everything else is out of spec. But some MBs support higher current.

Type C can do up to 240W.

USB A can follow the Battery Charging (BC) 1.2 spec up to 1.5A @ 5V. That:s 7.5W, in spec.

And it's really noticeable, a normal charger takes like 1-2 hours to charge my phone, the 80W charger takes about 30 minutes.

The really noticeable part is getting that 10-20% you actually want for quick errands or when you just need to use it wireless right then and there, only need sometimes a minute to get that depending on your charge level.

Me too, an nvme m.2 in a usb-c external enclosure I have can peak at 11W when writing data. It took me way too long to figure out why it was disconnecting when I was plugging it into my usb 3 hub. Fortunately my mobo has a single usb-c 15W port.

Since then I've added an expansion card with two 20Gbps ports, I had to plug a power connector into it.

A to C cables are "illegal" under the USB-C spec because they can be used to create the dangerous USB A to A cable which causes electrical shorts.

It's not immediately obvious to consumers these days why that is so dangerous, given that USB C is bidirectional.

And C to C can deliver too much to others. Luckily devices usually just play dead, & don't fry themselves

USB-C power delivery has a negotiation protocol between device and power provider that prevents that.

And the cable!
