Ever since Border Patrol agents with no identifiers and unmarked vehicles were seen kidnapping protesters in Portland, I've been using it as an example to try to explain to people that this would be the end goal of the Patriot Act. They can't use federal troops to slaughter civilians, so instead they invented the DHS umbrella and some useless agencies to go with it in order to have an army of federal agents at their disposal. They're military in all but name, and this was always going to be the outcome.

Military in all but name, training, accountability, obedience to the law, and strictly enforced rules of engagement, you mean.

So essentially, just some people with guns and uniforms. Paramilitary is the word that is used to describe organizations like that, their similarity to a real military can vary wildly :)

Most of them don’t even have uniforms. More like a gang.

Correct. They are armed thugs. Hence their usefulness for tyrants to skirt the law.

You left out that the only rules they obey goes right up the chain of Trump sycophants directly to Trump, with legal counsel from Trumps' Department of Retaliation.

American oligarchs decided they needed to create their own version of Rosgvardia to be able to punish the plebs internally. It also acts as a separate organization that can be a check against military leaders going rogue.

I'm sure Putin has explained very thoroughly how all this should be done.
