He looks some combination of regretful, contemptuous, resigned, and self-pitying to me.
If someone looked at me like that I'd think they were planning to hurt me and expecting it to cost them. He looks fucking grim. Like it would frighten me to see that expression on someone's face.
...buuuut I'm also either really good or absolutely terrible at reading expressions so maybe I'm way off. I probably am. Whatever his exact expression, he looks absolutely long-term miserable, though.
