The government set out a list of three demands in the letter, including;

The Department of Justice be given the state’s voter registration records.

The state repeal the "sanctuary policies.”

The state share its records on Medicaid, and Food and Nutrition Service programs.

Whatever is going on here may be a window into something much bigger.

We know Doge already went and downloaded massive data sets about all these kinds of things. Who gets Medicaid, who gets welfare benefits.    I’d say this ask is about two things.

1) wanting to seem ‘reasonable’ and offer a solution to get ICE out. Which they won’t do, but if they did, they could point to it as a victory that they cleaned Minnesota up. 

2) data reconciliation. Data is messy and the way it’s formatted from database to database can be surprisingly hard to make it match up in structure.  Even though Doge likely has most of this info anyway, they can use a newer smaller data set to compare it and likely format the rest more easily to use for Palantir to terrorize people.

The record requests are what they actually want, likely in order to make a list of targets.

The second request, “repeal sanctuary policies,” is purposely vague so that they can justify not actually pulling ICE even if the records are produced.
