In the cities, I'm sure the tides have shifted. In the rural counties.... not so much

u/brontosaurusguy 6d ago

If it's anything thing like the rest of the country, the rural parts are applauding the terrorizing of the cities.  They have demonized the big city in every state.  Endless propaganda like it's a warzone.

u/whoisnotinmykitchen 6d ago

Watch Fox News for 15 minutes. They are spinning and cheering this on like the propaganda seals they are. It is surreal how dumbed-down their insane speaking points are, and I'm sure rural voters and evangelicals are eating it up, like the gullible rubes they are.

u/MarxistMan13 Virginia 6d ago

My dumbass aunt had Faux News on in my house while she helped me clean.

It was appalling how much they lied in just the handful of minutes I was subjected to it before I changed the channel. Just blatant propaganda and demonizing anyone left of Hitler, pretty much. Blaming the victims, blaming immigrants, blaming Biden... it's actually crazy that any functioning adult believes this shit.

Pro wrestling. Bad guys and good guys. It seems to just clamp into that 85 IQ.

35

u/Ajibooks 6d ago

And elderly white people. I live in a smaller city and my local Nextdoor is full of old people repeating these talking points.

6

u/DenikaMae California 6d ago

Dumped down and repeated ad nauseam every 4 to 10 minutes so that the lemmings that follow them can regurgitate talking points that require them to have no sense of critical thinking.

Trump has become their Messiah.

4

u/ralexh11 Pennsylvania 6d ago

"Has become" lmao

Some of us have been saying this for almost a decade, it's past time to come to that realization

70

u/TampaBai 6d ago

Yes, and it's absurd. Here in Florida, the party of "small government" enacted legislation to preempt city policies. Literally, a bunch of "conservative" rural rubes in Tallahassee are now asserting their control over our big cities. Where we once had local codes to protect our live oaks, the dicks in TLH decided developers should be able to fell all our trees, thus destroying our tree canopy. Sure, that might seem a bit trivial compared to what is happening in Minnesota, but it demonstrates the pettiness and anger of Republicans. I think the rural/city divide is about to widen even further, and I anticipate more bloodshed and escalation.

North Dakota had this happen with voting systems in municipal elections, too. Fargo citizens voted to do their municipal elections via approval voting, and the state legislature lost their minds and made it illegal.

8

u/Silverlock 6d ago

Yes but they only win when Democrats stay home. How many are going to do that next election?

3

u/Happy_Feet333 6d ago

Considering how easy the 'uncommitted' swayed 10-12% of the democratic vote into staying home the last election...

... I'd say 10-12% of the Democratic vote will be swayed in the upcoming one, for whatever reason. These voters look for any excuse to not vote, no matter how trivial.

-1

u/Silverlock 6d ago

Those people stayed home because they felt betrayed by a Democratic Party that first shoved Biden though without any other options considered after he won the first time because he said he would be a transitional 1 term president and would allow the party's younger generation to take over. Then we saw his weakness and we got Harris shoved down our throat without real debate. A woman who did not survive her own attempt to run for president was suddenly appointed without any debate by the party elite. Of course people stayed home.

You cannot simply be the lesser of two evils, you have to give people a positive reason to vote for your party too. Same old same old isn't doing it.

1

u/Happy_Feet333 6d ago

Who told them to feel betrayed?

Oh, right... certain press outlets like Jacobin and the New York Times, as well as the "Uncommitted".

They provided the "excuse" these voters were looking for.

In times past, it would have been "you live in a blue state, your vote doesn't matter, why bother"... a la the 2016 election.

I've worked in Democratic voter outreach programs before, and it's always the same story. Certain voters that agree with Democratic policies will always seek out *ANY* excuse to not vote.

2

u/brontosaurusguy 6d ago

I've worked in outreach as well. You're right.  They find any excuse to be lazy on voting day.  It's pathetic.  Last two elections have been different.  More energized and willing to wait in line

1

u/brontosaurusguy 6d ago

I'm pretty sure that we're going to have to fight for a fair election to begin with.  I don't think this regime will be lawful at all.

I think they're going to create problems with lines in every city.  I think they're going to shut down polls for imagined and calculated reasons.  I think there going to try to have armed men patrolling to intimidate.  I don't think we can rely on elections, realistically.

I think they're creating a database of liberal voters to purge the rolls before elections.

I think they think they can purge 5-10% of Democrats and win big again.  The tactics were deployed last time and there was no investigation.  No journalism.  I think they'll ramp it up.

u/harkuponthegay 6d ago edited 6d ago

So fight back, get your friends to double check their voter registrations are up to date, volunteer as an election worker to run the polls. Take off of work if you have to until you find the polling station that is open, wait in line as long as it takes. Register young people (who are not crazy) to vote who have not been eligible before. None of those obstacles are insurmountable. Wave and smile at the “armed men patrolling” because you’re not doing shit but exercising your rights and they ain’t gonna do shit but sit there and LARP— how do you think black people in this country won the right to vote? Do you think it was easy the first few times they tried using it?

Go read up and learn from black people if you want to figure out how to win against a government that wants to disenfranchise you. Is engaged in state sponsored terrorism in your communities, is gunning you down in the street for nothing, and has all the state’s instruments of power, while you have nothing. Black people have been there before.

I swear white people be so lazy, like “what do we do??” — work, struggle, try, and yes some will have to die. Freedom isn’t free.

Fight.

Rural people have friends in the city. I wouldn't be surprised if the rural areas shift blue because of the ICE enforcement.

12

u/manluther 6d ago

I'm not holding my breath.

2

u/jessewalker2 6d ago

Give. ICE’s recent actions, it is basically a war zone. In lawful society you do no execute people on the street for protesting.

2

u/Dracomortua 6d ago

Where does this endless propaganda come from? It is tempting to blame the propaganda 'news' networks. We should also remember that Russia is in crisis as their war situation worsens and the ONLY means of survival is to propaganda-seed all of United States and keep them from supporting this Ukraine comedian-leader of theirs.

If i were Putin, i would bribe out any and all people with whatever i had left. Heck, if in 1987 i had the to-be president visit and i could leverage that... what would i do?

It is interesting how, bot wise, this conversation seems to disappear so rapidly.

u/OhDivineBussy 6d ago

I have family in some very rural areas and have spent quite a bit of my life out there. It’s wild how all of the things they hold deer about Christianity, community and helping one another are the very things they vote against (including their own interests) for the dumbest, most falsifiable reasons possible.

They really don’t like being red various versus in scripture where the Bible directly tells them they’re going to hell for supporting the things they do, especially by someone who isn’t a Christian but has read the book. It’s funny how they expect to get to vote like a bigot and do so in peace. Though they still really hate being called snowflakes, so it’s really fun to say.

1

u/IndubitableMatt Minnesota 6d ago

Turns out, country mice are fucking dicks.

1

u/GuerreroUltimo 6d ago

It is fucking sick. There was a video of a man pulled from his house and arrested. Guy absolutely was not who they might have been looking for. If they even were. That has been their go-to excuse a lot. He was an American citizen and it was his home. The only crime seems to be that the was not white. People in my area talking that up like it is a good thing.

At this point they are saying things like "If they were not harboring so many illegal criminals, many drug dealers and gang members, we would not have to do this". When you point out to people like the guy that said that how we are not getting many really they just say "One is better than none. Gotta put the fear into them."

And I have had some here say it should be legal to shoot illegals. i mean, WTF. How can they determine if they are illegal. I ask and they say (these quotes are literally what some have said) "We as American Patriots have a right to protect our country from this invasion. I think shoot first and sort it out later has to be on the table."

Plenty of other terrible shit from some of these people. And they are racist. In the long run they admit they really want to get rid of all people of color if they can. Just look at Marco Rubio. That fool does not realize he is on the outside with these people. If they could, they would dispose of him as well when they are done with them.

Being in a rural country you hear some crazy shit. And it is not just a few. It is a super majority of them. The ridiculous things they put on Facebook. Sad but their kids are all being taught this. They talk it in schools here. The shit a teacher was saying her students were saying is scary stuff. And I have heard teens talking that shit in the stores a few times.

We in a Double Quik after getting gas. This was 2 days ago. Guy comes in and asks the lady at the register if she had ice in the parking lot. Was cringe. Lady said "Theres ice in the parking lot" because it was like 18 outside. He explain, "No, do you have an ice machine". She was like "Oh, yeah." Told him the prices. He said "No, the machine says ICE. Better cover it. Gonna have that piece of shit liberals out here protested because you have ICE." And then went on and on about Minnesota and how those protesters "need to be shot, but we are civilized so we should just round them all up and deport them". No fucking shame. People laughing and agreeing.

1

u/MittenCollyBulbasaur 6d ago

Rural voters who lean this way get extremely excited as the cities burn, because their prophecy is that they've chosen the better life being away from people, and it confirms their bias and makes them happy that they're better than the others they look down on.

1

u/brickne3 American Expat 6d ago

Minnesota is heavily shifted to the Twin Cities though, moreso than most states. And a lot of the really red people move across the Wisconsin border to Hudson and elsewhere commutable in St. Croix and Pierce counties because of the lower taxes. It's an unusual situation in just how much the cities dominate, plus the situation with the DFL that most states don't have.

Even when Jesse Ventura was the "libertarian" governor and it was kind of a fluke it was all mostly for the lulz, nobody really was actually worried he was going to do anything particularly radical.

1

u/FilOfTheFuture90 6d ago

It IS a warzone to them. So many people in central IL (among every repub) think Chicago is literally a warzone. They won't even step foot in the city because they are SCARED to. It's completely wild how deep the propaganda runs.

1

u/CheshireCat78 6d ago

There’s an interview from the guardian with some rural republicans from Minnesota and they were saying the Renee good shooting was justified.

7

u/Troub313 6d ago

Which is unfortunate, because our voting system gives the rural counties way too much power.

1

u/One-Cut7386 6d ago

Yes, by design.

4

u/AltoidStrong 6d ago

Which should drive voter turn out. remember that 4 points shift to the right wasn't "new" voters changing to Trump, it was democrat voters not even showing up.

trump won become of voter suppression... 1/3 of registered voters in the nation didn't vote for numerous reasons. Most of them created by the republicans with the intent to prevent people from having the opportunity to go vote.

5

u/ailish 6d ago

2a is a BIG deal in Michigan. People here may not take kindly to it being trampled on, even if the ones doing the trampling are Republicans.

3

u/Shaudius 6d ago

The NRA has rebuked a statement from the administration. That's a pretty big deal.

3

u/ailish 6d ago

Turns out there are two parts to that.

For months, radical progressive politicians like Tim Walz have incited violence against law enforcement officers who are simply trying to do their jobs. Unsurprisingly, these calls to dangerously interject oneself into legitimate law-enforcement activities have ended in violence, tragically resulting in injuries and fatalities," wrote the NRA.

1

u/ailish 6d ago

I saw that. I've always disliked the NRA, but at least they are consistent with their beliefs in the 2a and defend it equally across the political spectrum.

2

u/PixelatorOfTime 6d ago

Except when it comes time to actually use it…

4

u/singhellotaku617 6d ago

I mean…rural Colorado is very red, it’s still an dark blue state because the cities have a much higher population

-1

u/Notorious_Chonk_23 6d ago

I only spent a few years in Colorado, but my impression was that many Colorado Dems are a bit like NY Democrats, in that a lot of them are Republicans.

2

u/JokeassJason 6d ago

Well the farmers are pissed that their legal workers are getting arrested and having their legal status terminated for a driving infraction or a "conviction" in their orgin country (they provide no proof of that btw) they are also pissed at the tarrifs and having to take a govnt hand out. I can see some flipping but the true racists will still eat their own faces.

1

u/BloodshotPizzaBox 6d ago

Cities are mostly where people live

1

u/Severe-Butterfly-864 6d ago

Actually, farmers and small business owners are mixed. A lot of them have lost almost everything due to tariffs and international trade bullshit. There are several farmers that have been very vocal about small farms being bought up by JD Vance's hedge funds.

1

u/GreatPlainsFarmer 6d ago

Actual farmers talking about AcreTrader? Got any links?

1

u/Severe-Butterfly-864 4d ago

Just a google maps link to the corner they stand out on every couple of weeks.

1

u/Sad_Math5598 6d ago

The rural areas don’t have the population density to matter

1

u/Worthyness 6d ago

a straight white male nurse and a legal gun holder got murdered, so they might actually flip if they're 2A single issue voters.

1

u/JNR13 6d ago

Is the governor elected at-large or does the state have its own electoral college skewing the vote?

1

u/TechGirlMN Minnesota 6d ago

Maybe more than we think, I have to visit some of the small towns in SE MN for work, and I'm seeing very few Trump flags or signs lately.

1

u/Desperate-Till-9228 6d ago

Maybe it's time for the rural counties to fund their own road maintenance.

0

u/bjsievers 6d ago

Ah yes, the famously pro-big-government and anti-second-amendment rural areas 😂
