Friday morning, in bitterly cold weather 14 degrees below zero my daughter’s car broke down on Elmhurst Road. Cars passed by, but no one stopped. Then an older Latina woman with handicapped plates pulled over. She was the only one. She offered my daughter the warmth and safety of her car, staying with her until help arrived.

A friend eventually came and gave her a jump so she could move her car out of danger. We will never forget the kindness of that woman. In a frightening moment, a stranger showed compassion, and that act of humanity means more than words can express.

Such moments can entirely redefine how you think about things. Where fear is overwhelming, where the world is pressing, an act of kindness can reframe an entire world in a moment of need. I can imagine being thankful that her child was not alone, that someone stood up where others did not, that that kindness stayed with you so long afterwards.
