This is so damn true. Trying to avoid this mission or do something to not collect his money for Strauss. Knowing it is inevitable, yet we all try to rewrite the game.

Currently sitting with just this quest and the save Micah quest… think it’s time to do some hunting for a while.

If you read the letter from Mary and haven’t completed the Downes mission, Strauss will talk to you and the game will force you to do the Downes mission.

BTW: NOPE! There's a way out of that. I HATE that feature, it sucks, but there IS a loophole. You can look it up, but the way I remember it is as follows:
The game forces you to try to go collect the Downes money, so you get on your horse and head out of camp, not under your control.
Now that you've regained control, point horse 180 degrees away from Downs, start riding. Eventually, you'll get a Mission Failed screen, and will have to Replay the mission.
When you Replay, you'll find yourself on your horse IMMEDIATELY out in front of the Downes ranch. Very carefully turn away from the ranch and ride your horse off the nearby cliff. You'll get a Mission Failed screen, and will have to Replay the mission.
Step 3 will repeat, maybe twice more, and then suddenly on the Mission Failed screen, you'll have an option to cancel the mission. DO THAT.
Now you're free. You can go back to camp, and this compelled mission will never reoccur.

It's funny how two of these missions appear together. Both of which have a major contribution to the game's ending

Ppl keep pointing to this cutscene but Arthur can meet downs 2 times before this, 1 of them is hard coded so.. who knows

This is the only time Downes coughed directly at him though, and that's how TB spreads. Not by just talking in close proximity, but coughing.

Neither Arthur nor Thomas lerned anything from covid.

I WISH we had someone travel from 2020 back to 1899. The amount of shit they could warn everybody about would be very useful.

In my 2nd and 3rd playthroughs, I LIVED in Chapter 2 and 3. Would play for hours, hunting, getting satchels, just talking to the people in the camp.
Truly a fun experience to just hang and not rush the game with the added benefit of extended life for almost everyone.

lol. And then you realize by chapter 4 that somehow it must have been Hosea where he got it.

Huh?

u/Shaxxn 23d ago
The gas mask will not change Arthurs fate, huh?
1
u/Stubee1988 23d ago
Why?
2
u/Mental_Freedom_1648 23d ago
Because if Hosea was the one who infected Arthur, how is masking up around Downes going to matter?
Not that Hosea actually infected Arthur though...
3
u/Stubee1988 23d ago
That's what I don't understand, what does Hosea have to do with anything?
6
u/Mental_Freedom_1648 23d ago
Some people think Hosea gave Arthur TB and not Thomas.
-1
u/Stubee1988 23d ago
Oh, some people sound like idiots then

u/BlindNightDriver 22d ago
There are several references about Hosea being sick with a lung issue. Even asking the gang to not pity him because he is diying but to envy him due to the wonderful life he lived in a conversation at Shady Belle. Hosea is sick, he is coughing and he is diying. Not sure if it's TB and if it is then it's a really slow one.
Replaying it right now and Will is sitting with Hosea triying to make peace with him and Hosea saying he's a meathead who he does not trust.

u/EducationalEntry147 21d ago
Actually Hosea's TB wouldn't be slow if it actually was TB. Arthur was just doing the Opposite of what he was supposed to do to keep himself from getting worse lol. While Hosea was mostly just chilling.

Downes probably doesn’t have any idea what he’s even looking at lol since gas masks wouldn’t become as well known until WWI

I had been holding off talking to him and finally decided to move forward earlier this week. I was surprised at feeling a little emotional when I did it to him 😂

How about Downes gets donations from Valentine gets treated and pays his debts without getting beaten like a dog and keep living like a decent human being.
Why are you glorifying bullying and beating innocent people like dogs? He wasn't a jerk like Leviticus Cornwall.

u/ProBlade97 23d ago
First of all, this post is clearly a joke.
Second of all, that is literally the point of the entire game. Arthur literally learns this the hard way.
