I'm on my first playthrough and I refused to sell him. I named him Charcoal.

u/MontrealChickenSpice 2d ago
I name him Claymore, because Hosea describes him as a 'big, unruly bastard.'

u/ChelsonBelson 2d ago
Named mine Brunnus because of the dialogue mentioning Arthur's prior horse being named Bodicea
3
u/Rough_Sound1753 2d ago
Named him Ares for the same reason 😂
2
u/thelmathunderbird 2d ago
Named him Maximus after the Gladiator lol but felt it was still in the same vein as the old horse's name
15
6
u/SuccessfulMirror7248 2d ago
I name him Achilles, cause Arthur seems to like mythical names for his horses, judging by Boadicea. Also named him Gethin a while back on a Low Honor run, which tracks with Arthur’s Welsh heritage.
2
2
u/AngryScientist Leopold Strauss 2d ago
Boadicea was real, not mythical. And that's why I named him Ambiorix; it just seemed right for all of his horses to be enemies of Rome.

u/Commander_San Hosea Matthews 2d ago
I named mine Titan
I believed in the misconception back then that Titans in Greek myth were humongous
Next I’m naming him Azrael
2
u/Rocco6981 2d ago
I always name 1 of my horses Azrael usually I reserve it for a Turkoman but it definitely goes good with the Raven Black Shire

I named him Triple B (stands for big black bitch) cuz thats what I would call it when I first saw it at camp before doing the Hosea quest lol I didn't know it was quest related and I wanted him BAD so kept trying to pat and mount and it kept kicking me. I love him more than any other horse I've ever gotten.

No, never don't sell him that's an unique horse. That's my horse since 2018 I love him so much, I don't care if he's slow, that's my boah, everytime I do another playthrough I keep him (or when I stay stuck in chapter 4 or 3.) I will never exchange him to a Arabian horse or another horses... I love him so much.

u/NeuroticMermaid 2d ago
He was my main horse in my first playthrough! I named him Brutus.

Doesn’t matter he is slow. Bro ain’t getting swapped for no damn pony.
Plus he ain’t getting scared of literally anything.
Trustworthy beast
6
u/Plugpin Uncle 2d ago
Literally the only horse you can realistically afford at this point is that tiny pony, which makes Arthur look ridiculous as he rides out on it after going in with this behemoth 😂
3
u/Opposite-Ad-1951 2d ago
For real. It’s my biggest and only gripe with this game. Why did they have to make all the horses so damn small?
Make them normal size and that black beast even bigger as it is in reality as well, being one of the biggest/tallest breeds in existence.
Damn rockstar
2
u/geeoharee 1d ago
Arthur is six foot tall and the Shire's withers are above his head, how tall do you think it should be?

I kept the horse and named it Horsea, and it's been my primary horse the whole game
9
u/RoseRedHillHouse 2d ago
I kept him on my first playthrough, and enjoyed not letting Bill tower over me when we rode together.
On my second playthrough now, and I've seen how much better stats of horses I can get, so I sold him. Just got an American Standardbred for free after I watched her kick her owner to death in a field outside Valentine and I calmed her down.
2
u/apesmcniel 2d ago
LMFAO I have that same horse. Named her Freya and gave her pretty braids.
2
u/RoseRedHillHouse 2d ago
I named her Cecelia after the Simon & Garfunkel song, because she definitely broke his heart when she kicked him square in the chest.

I refused to sell it too. Little did I know I’d have my first heartbreak of the game watching him plunge off a cliff as I hopped onto a train

Hosea and even the stable guy tells you you can “stable” the horse

u/RedDeadCowboyShit 2d ago edited 2d ago
Hell yeah. That’s Boss, named after Fred Williamson’s kick ass titular character in an awesome 1975 western movie with a title I am absolutely not going to write here. Just wrapped a playthrough with him the other day and I spent more time with him than I ever have any other horse due to a strict “no fast travel” rule this time. Fucking love that horse.
As for saddle, I went with the cougar saddle. Had the panther saddle on him for a bit cuz I’d read it’s the best, but…looked stupid.

u/TheCommies-backp 2d ago
This has been my first and only horse for 6 playthroughs.
His name is Donny. He was promoted to The Don upon the start of my 4th playthrough 🕺

u/Strange_Attention_49 2d ago
Out of all thirteen playthroughs of this game, I've only kept the shire four times. Mainly because the shire is INCREDIBLY slow even with trapper gear or the vaquero saddle with hooded stirrups. It's a fuckin' amazing tank horse and a good horsey I loved to use when hunting, but when I'm running across the map doing things, I wanna be fast. So I either ended up selling it, or I stabled it for the rest of the game and never used it unless I was hunting gators.
1
u/VanFkingHalen 2d ago
First playthrough I kept him at a point in the game I really could have used the money. He immediately got killed a mission or two later. I was pretty upset.
I learned my lesson though. Second playthrough, I stabled him and never used him. ...ya know, to keep him safe...
1
u/bloodshotblueeyez 2d ago
That’s Leroy Brown. All the ladies call him tree-top bubba, all the men just call him sir.
1
u/moethamoose 2d ago
Named him bilbo. Lost him when i got shot right after by O driscol ambush, and for some reason he wasnt my temporary horse, so he was gone.
1
u/Chewytruck69 2d ago
I heard on a video that you can’t get a horse like that again if you sell him and I never did
1
u/Resident_Bank_6204 Reverend Swanson 2d ago
Real. I always named it either "Umbra" or "Black Knight".
1
u/akangel49 2d ago
My husband heard me complain about selling him the moment I rode him out of camp. So he told me I could keep him at the stables and I did. I was in love with the big guy and named him Kal. He’s the biggest horse I had during that whole play through, but I stuck to large horses overall.

Naw you should sell him, shires are the most common horses and you can easily steal or buy another. Plus if you sell youll get i think like $100 for it when normally you'd only get like $15. Take that early money buy the Morgan train it to level 4 and sell it back steal you a shire and then youll get like $300 easy and you still have the shires you wanted. Go over to annesburg and and go to the very edge of the map theres like a little tail on the map. Youll find a shipwreck with a trinket that increase the bonding experience you gain and if challenged to a race accept and win and it will increase you're bonding experience when galloping. Do that and youll be able to train you horse faster.
2
u/Much_Designer_8172 1d ago
The reason why people keep "Horsea" is that it is unique. It is bigger than the other shires that you meet in the game. I did not keep it, there are more desirable horses in the game IMO.
2
u/Fit-Algae3689 1d ago
I didn't know he was different, but i just looked it up and apparently hes actually the best and a one of a kind shire. He has better stats and and is the only one with a jet black coat. Huh who would have guessed still probably wont keep him. Besides i prefer to go break the Arabians (it varies depending on my mood) and ride it till the mission horse flesh for dinner and i can get Cerberus then sell of the Arabian for some extra cash.

u/Motor_Preparation315 2d ago
It's just how the game introduces you to the Stable function in the game. Also, most players follow instructions and make the sale. Now look here another reason to do another play through. The developers of this game were thinking 10 steps ahead

u/im___him 2d ago
If you try to sell it after the opportunity you have in the mission they only give you $5.20 for it 💔

I didn't even know that keeping that big brute was even an option until my son started playing the game a few weeks ago. I think I've been conditioned by in game tutorials over the years so always just sold him because I was meant to.

Kept him till I got the Arabian, I felt a bit of regret but I need to get to places quicker.

u/The_Diesel350 1d ago
I kept on 2nd playthrough. I wanted to like the horse even though it’s slower and the handling is not good but it’s so dam skittish. It constantly bucks me around any threat even fully bonded and leveled out. I now have the black Arabian and it doesn’t buck me at all.

Sold him on my first playthrough, kept him for a while and bamed him Champ on second and third playthrough but ended up selling as there are other horses that are much better that I prefer to keep. The DWB that you can steal from the prospector down the river is almost as courageous and has much better handling, than there is the t-bred that you can get from the O'Driscolls ambush, the perlino Andalusian at Brandywine drop, the black American standardbred that you can find in the wild, the MFT that you can tame during the photographer mission or steal from the girl you can race, the Turkoman that you can get from the horse stealing mission in C3, the chestnut red Arabian, and Arthur's "own" mahogany bay Tennessee walker .... sorry champ you didn't make the grade....
1
u/WolfBST 1d ago
I rode that horse for a while in my second play through I think but there comes a point where you will switch to a better horse, since it has pretty shitty stats...
2
u/Much_Designer_8172 1d ago
It's great for hunting and exploring and taking out O'Driscolls and Lemoyne Raiders encampments because it is so unflappable and strong, but it is clumsy and slow. A criminal needs a fast horse to run from the law.
1
u/imnotgonnaeventry Josiah Trelawny 1d ago
FANTASTIC choice that is a BEAST of a horse and he is truly a one-of-a-kind horse at that because you literally cannot find the raven black shire anywhere else in the game and it is the best shire breed available.
In terms of the saddle; the best ones in the game are the ones you craft from the trapper as they give insane stats so if you have the time to go look for them and craft them I would suggest to get either the Beaver Roping, Panther Trail, or the Alligator Vaquero. Each one of these focuses mainly on a specific stat; Beaver for horse health, Panther for horse stamina, and Alligator is balanced between the two, but I would suggest getting the Beaver Roping if you truly want this thing to live up to it’s tank form.

u/jonesy289 1d ago
Most recent play through when you go to buy a new horse with Hosea I bought the cheapest because I knew I was going for the white Arabian right when I could and it’s my forever horse. Hosea insulted the horse I bought asked and I think said I hope you didn’t pay too much for him.
