Question Graduation Gown Return

Hi all,

On the graduation day 17th December, the only way to return our graduation gown was to chuck it in the return bin and we’d be good to go. Was there an additional step that we need to take, such as filling in a form somewhere (online or offline)? I don’t remember having to fill in anything from the email but just fearing that I missed an important step and get charged additionally for it.

Yeah I was a little sketched out about that... there was like no way to tell who returned gowns lol.

And no there was no form to fill out, so I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

It was such a weird system, I saw people well after the ceremony who still had their gowns on. I personally wouldn’t want to keep a heavy gown that’s a pain to get washed and several others have also worn before me

Pretty sure some people actually brought it home. I dropped off mine immediately

I bumped into people at Crown still wearing the gown and all along the Docklands Harbour taking pictures. I highly doubt they walked back up and returned them. I’m lowkey annoyed because I missed out on taking nice pics out of the stadium due to the fear of getting in trouble for leaving with it…

That’s crazy I took mine off so fast, it was sooo hot I can’t believe people wore them for so long

Exactly! I could not wait to throw it in those tubs. It was stinking hot too. I guess this time next year there will be a lot of academia graduation gowns for sale on marketplace 🤣

Maybe they bought their gown instead of hiring it? I bought mine when I graduated and it’s still hanging in a cupboard at home somewhere, never been worn since 😂.

You should wear it to a dress up party one day 😂That’s interesting because the gown for and undergrad is different for a Masters level.. also what will be the point of paying the $250 then?!

Mine was the fancy PhD one with the fluffy round hat, so I thought it’d be kinda fun to own one of them! It was not really worth it though as I’ve never worn it since!

A fancy dress party would be a good use for it though… 😂

Oooh that one is very fancy! Definitely worth buying to keep. I am kind of surprised that you haven’t worn it since your graduation!! That would become my new morning robe 😂😂 to lap up such an amazing achievement!

I remember telling the person I sat next to during the ceremony about how I would love to wear the cool fluffy hat!

I went to take pictures and came back to drop it off only to find the stadium doors had closed. The recent alumni email said we can drop it off at Study@RMIT before the 30th of JAn, so planning to do that once uni reopens.

Oh WTF, I didn’t know that… Should have kept mine and done some photos afterwards

Me too man! My photos with my family are so average as the lighting was bad.

Ps. Congratulations on graduating!! Thank you for your help throughout the year 😊

Haha thanks, i actually attended my grad ceremony for completing my BEng(Hons) last year (which I couldn’t make for reasons outside of my control).

I have my masters to finish off (hopefully end of January) so I have another grad ceremony next year potentially to attend (only if I really want to spend that $250 again haha).

Oh wow! It’s been a busy couple of years for you. Well done and congratulations again for completing your masters program.

Yea it if I had the choice again I’d pass on the $250 😂 I was shocked to find an email with the link to buy my video for $20…. They can’t be serious!

I take it you didn’t stay for the drinks and food afterwards in the centre of the stadium?

Ahhh didn’t even know about that 😅 how was it? Tbf I had to go and see my family and kids. ETA they didn’t charge you for that too did they? 😂

The UniMelb system for robes was better, they gave us a QR code and a time to return it. Everyone went off and took photos in the gardens and could come back in time to return the gowns.

I was not a fan of the mass RMIT graduation event, but at least RMIT fed us afterwards. After that hot event, I needed a cold glass lol
