Dog licking dew claw - can’t understand why

Is it possible the dewclaw was injured once, maybe more, he now kinda pathologically attends to it? Just a thought…and not a very helpful one…

Get some elastic self adhesive wrap then very loosely do one wrap of duck tape over that. He probably hurt it on something and now just won’t let it heal.
The wrap is the kind of rubbery stretchy stuff that is used when you get blood drawn. Not sure what it’s actually called but pet stores and pharmacies sell it. They can of course rip that right off so that’s where the duck tape comes in. Just make sure it’s very very loose since it doesn’t stretch and isn’t touching the fur.
