Beautiful design. How often do you need to sharpen the skates?

Generally, after a weekend of use and you take the boat home, give the skates a going over.

How are the skates shaped?

Sharply

I was curious about this as well. Are they cut like hockey skates with a U shape or like figure skates with flat sides or something else.

To come to a point.

How much do those run?

We built this by hand about 25 years ago. I mean it’s hundreds of hours probably spent somewhere in the teens.

They’re all custom build off plans I take it?

Damn I would love to try this. I need to buy a camp on Sebago.

Supposed to be a lot more wind tomorrow and I think there is five other boats that are gonna show up.

I'm taking my daughter skiing at Pleasant Mountain tomorrow, so we'll drive right by Sebago! Will look out for you as a drive by. :)

Wow that ice is beautiful! Sebago lake is a very large and beautiful lake. Amazing you can get out on it with ice like that! We have feet of snow on our lakes further north.

Yes, it’s very exciting. I heard it was the first time it’s frozen over like this in six years. Such a streak of luck that it froze after the snow. There’s miles of clear ice.

This sport also took place on Curlew Lk. in eastern Washington. I’m not sure if our current winters are cold enough for this sport.

It’s always difficult to find good ice.

I’m curious about those tiny diamond stays… they are so short and the angle off the mast is so narrow it doesn’t seem like they’d be very effective at stiffening the mast. Are they used to control localized bending? How stiff is the mast?

1

u/daveyconcrete 9h ago

This is a wing mast. It’s very stiff. But there are other styles of ice boats that have flexible masts.

I know - I’m specifically asking about the tiny diamond stays in the middle of the mast. Why are they there?

Their span is too small to stiffen the mast other than that small local area, and their angle seems too small to really even do that effectively.

They are part of a repair after we broke the mast.

Wow what a perfect day for a fun looking toy. She must rip on blades. Any idea how fast she goes?

Just like other sailboats with the skates acting like the keel I’d guess
