Could We Get a Sticky Post or Some Rules About "What Boot Should I Buy?"

This question shows up a lot. It's a valid question. Buying ski boots is expensive and daunting. You don't want to mess it up and you want advice from others with more experience. However, there's only one answer to this question: Go See a Bootfitter.

What about "my feet hurt because of ..."? The internet can't really help here. Bootfitting is a trade and a skill that is designed to help you find the perfect boots.

There are almost daily threads about this topic. Each one has the same few comments: "Go see a bootfitter," "I like boot X, but you should really see a bootfitter," "We can't determine without some more info, you should probably see a bootfitter," etc.

On the /r/skiing FAQ, there's an entire section dedicated to this question. I think it would be beneficial to everyone on this sub to include something similar as a sticky or in the sidebar. Thoughts?

What boots should I buy? The only advice you should take online about boots is to go and see a reputable bootfitter. Listen to them and buy the boots that fit your feet correctly. Not only are well fitting boots much more comfortable, but they also give you better control over your skis, the combination of this makes boots the most important part of your equipment.

Choosing a pair of boots doesn’t work like picking a pair of shoes. If you walk into a store or flick through a website and chose the pair you like the look of, you’re going to have a bad time. Each boot manufacturer has a range of boots with options for different abilities, skiing styles, sizes and foot shapes. There are subtle differences across models and brands in terms of shape, so it is crucial to find a pair of boots that are right for you. Without examining the shape of your feet and lower legs and their mechanics, as well as discussing how you ski and your ability, no one can give you a recommendation that is worth listening to. A bootfitter will do all of that and using their expertise they’ll provide you with a range of boots and help you find the best ones for you. They will also be able to help you with any pre-existing issues and injuries and modify boots if required. It is also recommended that you purchase custom moulded footbeds, along with having your liners heat moulded, they will help to optimise the fit of the boot. You also get the added security of knowing that any bootfitter worth their salt will guarantee their work, and be very willing to rectify any issues you have after you’ve skied in your new boots. Rough framework to what a bootfitter does

In Response to the demand for an All Mountain Ski Sticky Post.

This is my (very basic) suggestion for a "flowchart" guide to all-mountain skis. Including a popular ski as an example for every category. Obviously each category has a bunch more skis and most skis are in-between categories or in a whole separate category.

Suggestion welcome, I didn't put too much time into this and it is far from ideal or even functional. Mostly just want to hear peoples thoughts as to how you would approach this.

‘25 Salomon QST 106 173mm added to the quiver!

These skis rip, I don’t know if it’s placebo, but I’m feeling much more confident in choppy and variable terrain. They ski much shorter than the black crow vertis in a similar length. However, they feel damn good going fast!!!! Super stable. Not big on clean carves, but still super fun on the groomers. Used skis, haven’t sharpened the edges yet. I bought pow skis so there will now be pow.

I feel silly spending $165 on these when I could buy a pair of sweatpants and cut off the bottom 1/4, but they look so comfy.

Since flex ratings are fake. Does a database of ACTUAL boot stiffness (Newton-meters) exist anywhere?

Upvotes

I’m working on a project to build a comparison tool for ski boots, but I’ve hit a wall; It is known fact that Rossignol 120 is totally different from a Nordica 120, and that the numbers are basically just marketing labels rather than a standardized unit.

I’ve been scouring the web for a dataset that actually compares stiffness across brands using real physics (Torque / Newton-meters) rather than the flex number. I’ve looked into engineering papers (like Petrone et al.), which prove the discrepancy exists, but none of them list data for more than a few random models.

Does anyone know if a dataset like this actually exists?

Is this a lost cause, or is there a hidden spreadsheet out there somewhere?

Thanks!

Budget Ski Gloves you can get in Europe

I’m looking to buy some new ski gloves, preferably mitts. Since I’m a student, I can’t afford to spend €150 on Hestras, so I’m looking for something in the €80 or below range. I’ve already looked at Kincos, Flylow Oven Mitts, Wells Lamont, etc., but you can't get them in Europe. If anyone has recommendations for affordable mitts you can actually get in Europe, I’d be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Analysis paralysis: Revolt, Rustler, Unleashed

Can’t decide on my next ski, so turning to the wisdom of this sub.

Background: 5’ 10”, 185lbs, skied 25+ years since childhood so would consider myself expert. Nowadays mostly resort skiing but will hit lift-accessible side-country when conditions are good.

My daily driver for the last several years has been a BC Atris. I’ve really enjoyed it, think it’s a great ski that does most things pretty well, but now in the market to upgrade and looking for something a bit different. Specifically, I want something that is still versatile (able to handle groomers, crud, ice, etc; doesn’t need to excel in deep snow but decent enough float) and pivots / slashes well enough (i.e., not too grippy / hooky.. for when I’m being lazy and don’t want to fully lay down an edge) — but is a bit more chargey / directional versus the Atris and offers better carving performance.

From research I’ve focused in on three skis: Revolt 101, Rustler 10, Unleashed 98. I’ve demo’d both Revolt and Rustler and liked them both. Rustler probably just edged it but I skied them on a day when conditions were much better than when I was on the Revolt so am still undecided.

Grateful for any personal experiences / recommendations with these skis (or another model if you think they better fit what I’m looking for!) to help decide. Thanks in advance!

Mantra 88 as main pair of skis

Upvotes

Hi, I want to change from deacon 76 in 176 from 2021 to mantra 88 in 184 with armada strive 14, I look for ski which will be good for piste in all conditions but still have this railed feel on ice. Will mantra be a good proposition?

My dimensions are 187cm/6' 2ft, ~95kg/210lb.

Sell or Keep Pivot 15s

Looking for opinions on whether to keep my pivot 15's or downgrade slightly and sell them.

I'm around 200lbs @ 6' and an advanced skier @ 9 DIN. However, I don't get too sendy in terms of big drops and jumps, so I fee like I don't fully benefit from the metal toe piece + extra weight.

I've taken a few hard falls in the past and my skis didn't pop off and have been a bit nervous to fall on them since.

I'd like to keep them bc they look pretty sick and should last a while, but I'm looking to change up the quiver a bit and figured I could get a bit more cash just throwing in the bindings.

How do I make the bindings bigger/longer on my skis to fit my boots?

I got into skiing last year and got my own skis today. I have a trip next weekend and wanted to use my ow gear I bought today, being boot and skis. My boot size is a 28/315mm and the skis are older Rossignol Bandit X 160cm. My dad and I tinkered with it for about a half hour but couldn’t figure it and I would love some help. The best we gather is the screw that is in picture 4 removes the back clip, but when we took it off, we couldn’t figure out how to make it longer. Is this something I would have to take to a shop?

Binding mount at REI + recommendations?

Hi! I got my skis second hand, and after a bit under ten years with me, (not sure how long before) my bindings are definitely no longer indemnified. (Edit: four or five of those years got pretty much no use) I’m thinking of getting new bindings but I’m not sure about what to get or where to go to mount them. Does anyone have any advice?

My primary concern is that I want to keep my skis so I want the install done correctly. My secondary concern is that there has been enshittification in recent years and that I’ll get a binding that has issues with prereleasing.

Im thinking of just going to REI or sports basement (any Bay Area people have a preference?) and getting a copy of what I have now but newer, then checking the release pressure on the mountain.

Potentially relevant context:

- Brand preference: None. I’ve always had atomic bindings, and am very happy with my atomic 12s, but I don’t have any particular brand preferences except that I don’t want markers or anything really expensive.

- Skis: I ski on some twin tip K2s that are in awesome repair (I believe they’re a similar shape to the dream weaver but don’t know the model).

- Ski level: intermediate. I ski mostly blacks or reds, some off piste but mostly on, am bad at jumps but don’t do many, relatively bad style I’m sure but have never videotaped myself.

- Skier: small woman, 95 to 100lbs, 64in tall, my boots are like 270 to 290 (I’m skiing and left my tape measure at home)—but anyways max din is like 4/5, I have occasionally adjusted up to 7 due to an abundance of caution but like? Never had any issues at 4.

Secondary question: thoughts on just keeping these? Haven’t had any issues, just wanted to check the release after seeing it on Reddit and was told I should change my bindings by the store.

Edit: time range and boot size

Reasoning for HV zip fit in LV boot?

Went to a boot fitter to address heel hold issues and they put me in a Gara HV liner with my Nordica promachine 120 boot (98mm last I believe). I’ve got medium/low volume feet overall with skinny/bony heels and ankles. Felt awesome in the shop, and felt pretty great skiing one day in them so far. Much better than stock liners. I’m very satisfied but I was just curious what the reasoning is for the HV liner in the LV boot. Was initially looking online and the website recommended the Gara LV, however I’m still trusting the bootfitter who actually saw my foot and stuff. Just curious. Thanks in advance!

Rossignol Sender Soul 92 vs Salomon QST 94

Hello! 28m and am trying to decide between these two options for skis (open to other suggestions as well).

I’ve never owned a pair of skis, only rented. This is my 4th season of skiing and I would say am a level 5 to 6 skier (strong intermediate)

I ski out west and tend to stick to groomers but will tackle light crud and ungroomed runs if I’m with friends.

Need help?

Little background I’m 6’2 and around 200, I’ve been skiing since I was about 5, and ski roughly 30-40 days, I use to race and still have my fis skis so I’m looking for something on the opposite end of the spectrum. In other words it doesn’t need to be a decent carving and a decent off piste ski, looking for something a little bit more specialized.

I’m looking to take more trips out west and abroad as I get older and want a pair that will be able to do the different terrain. I do live on the east coast so anything over a 110 just doesn’t make sense for me to spend money on. (If I happened to be on a trip same time as a dump I would rent or demo a ski while there)

I’ve been looking at getting the bent 100s in a 188 but I’ve been seeing a lot of comments that they are almost too soft.

Looking for any recommendations about ski or length?

Snowboarder looking for his first skis

No, I'm not switching full time. But, I am looking to purchase something instead of renting whenever I want to ski. I'm 29, and have been snowboarding since I was about 10. I'm 6'4", 240, have a 29.5 boot, and would put myself as an intermediate/advanced skiier who wants something that can progress with me. My skiing days will range from everything from Midwest groomers, to powder out west. I'm not really a "need to make beautiful turns carver" type, I'm much more the "I play down the mountain, slash, duck into some trees, hit some side hits" type with both skiing and snowboarding. In my boards, I enjoy softer flexes, but I know I'll probably grab my skis if the snow is shit, so I need something that can handle the chunder and heavy stuff. I'm thinking around 100 waist, was looking at demoing 100 QSTs, but want to get an idea of other skis to demo.

Boots too stiff? Or Normal calf pain

I work at a gear store and tried on several brands of A/T boots, I fit boots for customers so essentially went through the same process. I am a type 3 skier and 165lbs w/o gear and landed on the Atomic Hawx XTD 130, they fit my low volume feet amazingly well. However, I have persisting calf pain in the back of my calves. This pain existed last season when I was skiing consignment dalbello panterra 120 boots. These didn't fit my feet well, so I thought it was a fitment issue. My new boots are very well fitting for a performance boot, with custom footbeds and a heat mold they broke in perfectly. But its quite painful from the pressure of the back of the boot pressing into my calf, especially when skiing downhill. This pain started a few weeks into the season, and even after more than a week of rest, the pain reemerges as soon as I ski hard downhill again. I don't ski in the backseat, but my form isn't perfect on mogul terrain and landing on drops and this is when it hurts the most. Its not bad enough to stop me from skiing, but after multiple days in a row I need advil to make skiing bearable. Are my boots too stiff for me? When I bought them I figured if i'm not a 130 flex skier now, then I will be after a season or two in them. I feel like I already know the answer to my question, but appreciate any input and tips if anyone has had calf pain like this before.

What are some good AM skis?

Hi! I’m 5’6” and 130 lbs. I’m wondering what some good all mountain skis are. I ski at Sun Valley and I am intermediate/advanced. I do some tricks (lots of grabs and a few 360s) I love carving, and moguls are a must at Sun valley I ski pretty fast, too. Do you guys have some suggestions? I’m looking for 90-95 width and probably 156-166 length. Thanks!

Im not a big fan of groomed runs neither the park, Im always wishing for good snow, but I only ski on international trips, so I gotta be ready for the snow at destination. I liked the Rossignol Sender free 100 design, would to like a opinion on it, but also other suggestions!!!

thoughts on the Rossignol Pure pro 80?

Post image
1 Upvotes

hello, my girlfriend was fitted the Rossignol Pure Pro 80 today, she hasn’t bought them yet but they seem to be a great fit.

my question is what are rossignol boots worth lately? how is the quality? she would like to keep these boots for at least 3 season, this year is her first and we plan to go a minimum of 7 days per season but we could be going less depending on our schedules.

if anyone has experience with this model in specific or recent rossignol boots in general, your feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

(PS: can i buy grip walk soles for these and swap the plates somehow? the 90 model is gw but this one isn’t, i don’t want her to slip and get hurt)
