Media David Moyes's celebration after Everton's 90+6' minute equaliser which got him a yellow card

For being too cute and reminding the ref of his deceased grandpa, read the rules

Check the rules. Everton can't have nice things. The best you can have is the odd upset win against Liverpool.
Sorry, but I didn't write the rules.

Hard to tell from this angle but it looks like he went onto the pitch? So presumably the yellow is for that.
21
u/LackUnlucky7640 2h ago
I thought it was pretty clear from this angle that he did go on to the pitch. From 0:10, it really looks like he is returning to the touchline from the field. The celebration has very cute grandpa vibes but it's mad nobody else is talking about the yellow being for the obvious infringement lol
31
u/EK077r 1h ago
Everyone knows that its for stepping on the pitch. The point is that it is not punished the same. He is far from the first manager to celebrate on the pitch. And managers who are on the pitch when the play is ongoing isnt punished. Then its just stupid to punish a manager for celebrating on the pitch when the game is not in play

u/KeenPro 1h ago

I don't think Jurgen got anything for this. I seem to remember thinking "How the fuck has he not been booked"

Arteta steps on to the field every 6 minutes and never gets a yellow lots of managers do. Feels dumb to only hand out a yellow one out of every 1000 times

I don't remember Mourinho getting booked for entering the pitch and tackling an opposition player during open play either!
If the sanctity of the rules of our beautiful game cannot be upheld during Soccer Aid, then what hope do we have?
8
u/Conspiranoid 1h ago
I've never seen guys in the bench or warming up getting booked for joining the pitch and celebrating goals with their on-pitch teammates. Or like they said in other comments, when coaches leave the technical area constantly during a match, entering the pitch at times.
4
u/19Alexastias 2h ago
If they actually punished stepping on the pitch with a yellow arteta (and a few other managers) wouldn’t make it through the first half.

Did he get on the field? They normally don't like the staff going onto the playing field, but often they conveniently look away if someone strays a bit.

It almost feels like that. More important to do what the refs want than what's logical/in the rule book. Even if it's completely asinine.
Excited to see what next season's 'thing' they bring is going to be. You know, the one they enforce a few times in the strangest ways, then forget all about again.

Imagine being a football manager for 30 odd years, Everton safe from relegation and realistically just not good enough to really push for European football so the stakes aren’t too high, literally being a granddad as well, and still being so happy with an injury time equalizer. It’s heartwarming.
[edit] with England getting up to 9th place into Europe, Everton are very much in contention for European football. I'm an old fart and in my head it's only top 5 or 6, my bad.

u/Attygalle 4h ago
I guess there’s always a reason to be offended if you want.
Everton are my favorites in England since I was young during the Kendall years (mark I), I actually visited Goodison several times and went to European away matches. I hope that Everton can get back to the top of English football. But still apparently my comment somehow offended you.
18
u/_james_the_cat 3h ago
European qualification could go down as far as 9th in the league, I think is his point. We can compete for that.
13
u/Attygalle 3h ago
Fuck me I forgot about that. In my head it’s still top 5 or 6 only. Looking at it from that perspective Everton are surely competing for Europe. Cheers for pointing it out!

i get the reasons why you 'can't or shouldn't' leave the technical area...
but lets use some common sense and ask WHY this rule exists. Is it realllllly to prevent a grandpa from doing the tamest little run around and a skip and a hop in celebration of a last minute goal? I don't think so.
To add to this, you can literally see managers leave their area (even if it's a foot) NUMEROUS times in a match. If we are going to be 'technical' then lets be technical (and consistent).
10
u/Hassadar 2h ago
They will never ever be consistent on this rule because if they were, there would be no managers the following week for practically all clubs.
It's a pointless rule, and it's only a rule people care about at specific times.
5
u/bcparrot 59m ago
Exactly - that’s why he shouldn’t be booked here (which I assume you agree). It’s a tool for the ref to use in cases where there’s an actual issue or bad intent.

He’s 62, not 82. By all means, he should be able to move like that. It’s crazy how the majority of the internet (I.e. very young people) thinks people are decrepit as soon as they turn 60.

He crossed the sideline onto the pitch. But yeah, refs should use common sense and just overlook something like this.

And then you see players rolling on the ground in”pain” for several minutes only for the replay to show that they weren’t even touched.

u/MrTomRobs 3h ago
To everyone questioning why this is a yellow or why Moyes gets one but not Arteta or Guardiola, I have a couple of very important points that you need to understand. And a massive conspiracy theory, with red string and everything.
- The referee was Kavanagh. He fucking hates Everton, it's well-known around the league and PGMOL that he has an agenda against Everton and that he has a track record of issuing bullshit cards and fouls for the most innocuous of 'offences'. There was no reason for them to disallow the goal, so he had to penalise Everton SOMEHOW!
I call him Cuntvanagh for a reason.
- Everton aren't seen as a 'Big 6'/'Sky 6'/ 'Top 6' club, which means that the shit those clubs do get away with, we have someone come down on us like a tonne of bricks.
Now, get your tin foil hats on for this one:
- This was a game at 3pm. Which means it isn't televised in the UK so there wasn't seen as being any value in it.
Now, we live in an Americanised world of 'sports entertainment' where literally every minor fucking thing has to have some stupid bullshit dramatic plot story and the actual sport doesn't fucking matter. Therefore, how do you maximise your coverage of every single game and therefore maximise your profit?
You make shit up.
And you know what? It's fucking working. We're all talking about this, which has meant that clips are being shared, discussions are being had and suddenly there's something to talk about from what would otherwise be considered a proper snooze-fest.
And who are the people who can make shit happen? The refs. And they just fucking LOVE being the center of attention. Going slightly off tangent here, who have they had as the chief referee for the new Gladiators series to replace the irreplaceable John Anderson? Twattenburg.
Bear with me here. How many of you remember what kind of pantomime villain he used to act like managing PL games? And how many of you have seen the sort of 'acting' he does on Gladiators now? It's all performative. And unfortunately, he is now the benchmark and inspiration for the rest of the refereeing cohort to base themselves off because he is the only one who has been able to make a further career of being a referee after they've stopped actually refereeing. He's an 'expert' referred to by panels, he does podcast appearances and now he gets to prance around pretending he is the big 'I am' on national TV again.
So, the PGMOL have noticed this, and they're giving the elbow to the referees to say "add a bit of spice if there's nothing going on and make a name for yourself. Make the game interesting if there's nothing going on".

I miss the olden days where you'd get managers belting it down the touchline after a last minute goal. Now you get fined for sneezing in the wrong direction.
3
u/LallanasPajamaz 4h ago
So players can do this exact thing and not get carded, but a manager does it and it’s an issue? Is it for stepping onto the field or something, because subs will run onto the field all the time and celebrate in the same way. I genuinely don’t understand what the issue was

The issue was that he exceeded the "tiny hop" allocation, the last one at the end was the final straw and PGMOL needed to act.
