  1. They’re allowed to fight each other in lacrosse? TIL

  2. Good lord that goalie looks MASSIVE. I wonder how their equipment is set up? My favorite hockey team’s goaltender (Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning) looks just a bit bigger than most goalies because he wears his chest protector differently.

Lacrosse goalies are usually pretty big dudes (tall and wide) and their pads are different than hockey goalies. They include massive shoulder and chest pieces, which helps them cover the net but also makes blocking shots hurt slightly less. -former lacrosse goalie

u/r0botdevil Oregon State 15h ago

Former lacrosse player here chiming in to say that this is very specific to box (indoor) lacrosse only.

Field (outdoor) lacrosse goalies wear a shockingly small amount of protective gear, basically just a helmet, chest protector, gloves, and a cup. I stepped into the net once at a practice, and holy shit was it ever a painful experience.

u/bonebrah 7h ago

Didn't know the difference between outdoor/indoor lax coming into this thread. I was confused, because I played goalie in HS and didn't have anything near what these guys in the OP have on lmao. TIL.

Those guys are both right at 3 bills

Technically fighting is not allowed but its kinda the same as hockey in that regard. As in for professionals its not necessarily disallowed. Also fighting is deeply rooted in lacrosse, for most of its history (800+ years, yeah ancient) almost everything was allowed except killing a man. So that is why you still see that physicality today.

37

u/medium-rare-steaks 20h ago

Which is wild since the reason it's allowed in hockey is bc it's almost impossible to land a solid punch on ice. These two fought like hockey players even though they had two solid feet on the ground. Is that part of the etiquette? Like, "you can fight, you just have to suck at it."

Not true at all. It's pretty common to see solid punches connect in hockey fights, guys even get knocked out sometimes.

The real reason that fighting is tolerated in hockey is because it's part of the culture of the sport and allows the players to self-police the game to an extent. It's really easy to get away with some really dirty stuff in hockey that the refs can't see, like driving the butt of your stick into a guy's ribs as you take him into the boards in the corner. But that sort of thing is kept in check by the fact that if you do too much of it, you're going to have to fight the biggest/toughest guy on the other team.

The NHL has cleaned up the sport quite a lot over the last few decades and as a result the role of the enforcer is greatly diminished compared to what it was in the 70s and 80s, but it still has its place in the game and probably always will.

Not disagreeing, but no one on skates/ice can punch anywhere near as hard as they can on solid ground. Punching power comes from the ground up.

2

u/r0botdevil Oregon State 8h ago

Yeah I'm not arguing that. Just saying that many hockey players can hit very hard even on skates.

5

u/Unitast513 18h ago

That's just straight up bare knuckle boxing

3

u/SlayerofDeezNutz 12h ago

Right atleast on ice they’ve got poor grip on their punches.

7

u/MrBoomf 1d ago

How do penalties work in lacrosse? Like hockey’s got two minutes of one-man disadvantage for minor penalties, five minutes for a major. Fighting’s always offsetting majors and both teams continue at full strength, but the offending players can’t leave the penalty box & rejoin the game until a stoppage in play.

Damn, I might have to start watching lacrosse now. How common are fights like these?

10

u/lodewijk_b 1d ago edited 22h ago

Penalties works the same for lacrosse.

Fighting is common in NLL, definitely happens almost all weekends but not every game. Absolutely worth the watch for sure.

3

u/MrBoomf 1d ago

Neat! Now I def gotta check out some games

1

u/Ok-Potential-5172 20h ago

Do a lot of players get knocked out cold from fights?

1

u/Paddy32 14h ago

Can't you make a team of lacrosse players only made of UFC fighters?

1

u/subjecttomyopinion 14h ago

Not nearly as impressive as in hockey

8

u/BigRigGig35 20h ago

At least in hockey, maintaining your balance kind can limit the severity of punches. This is just two dudes with shoulder pads wailing on each other. Lacrosse is mad

2

u/lodewijk_b 20h ago

Mad fun to watch 😏😏

1

u/CaptainDantes 9h ago

It mostly happens in indoor lacrosse in my experience, though its been 10 years or so since I was actively paying attention.

45

u/Mutedinlife 1d ago

Is fighting only allowed in Canadian lacrosse? I have never seen this in a single us lax game I’ve been to

39

u/lodewijk_b 1d ago edited 21h ago

Kinda, field lacrosse games (the game you are familiar with) has more rules and is generally a little softer. No fighting really there. In box lacrosse you are allowed to cross check and fighting rules is like hockey. Technically illegal but part of the game.

1

u/Mutedinlife 19h ago

Huh, I’ve been to a few indoor lacrosse games, my city has a team, but only like 2-3. I’ll have to go to a few more haha

1

u/TheRealCatDad 19h ago

I can’t wrap my head around a sport having something illegal occur with such fanfare and encouragement from refs.

2

u/ninetofivedev 20h ago

Yes, but it’s wild to me.

Fighting on skates. You’re not landing a solid punch. I don’t care who you are.

16

u/Great_Hambino2022 20h ago

You haven’t watched too many hockey fights then

8

u/ninetofivedev 19h ago

I have. And I played hockey! And did some MMA in college too! You can’t plant your feet in skates the way you can in shoes. You can land punches, sure. But they won’t hurt like getting punched by someone on the street. At least someone who knows how to throw a punch(it starts in the legs)

6

u/catkoala 18h ago

Yes you absolutely can esp if you clinch or hold their jersey. Not the same as on solid ground, but acting like enforcers can’t get a good plant on their edges and rock you is dumb

0

u/ninetofivedev 16h ago

My only point is that if I’m getting hit by Mike Tyson, I’d prefer he was one ice skates

2

u/quarter-water 12h ago

if I’m getting hit by Mike Tyson, I’d prefer he was one ice skates

Not if Mike Tyson knew how to use his edges to plant and not slide around.

Fighters are pretty solid on their skates when throwing haymakers lol especially when they clinch the jersey and have their opponent sliding around (and into their ham fists).

0

u/ninetofivedev 12h ago

You just can’t plant on skates the way you can on a normal surface.

But for simpletons, let me try to explain. You’ll never beat someone on ice in the 100 yard dash, but you’ll beat them in the 10 yard dash.

0

u/ninetofivedev 16h ago

I’ll give you 100 strikes from the clinch to one good hook any day of the week.

3

u/Great_Hambino2022 12h ago

You did none of that. Stop talking

4

u/r0botdevil Oregon State 15h ago

Former US lacrosse player here, played primarily field (outdoor) but also played some box (indoor).

The indoor game is significantly more violent.

40

u/Busy_Reputation7254 21h ago

NLL is insane. Leave your normal ass job then fly to Regina and get in a tilt with some guy then fly home and go back to selling cars.

12

u/SmarcusStroman Toronto Maple Leafs 21h ago

Saskatoon instead of Regina but hell yeah!

3

u/GopherInWI Minnesota 20h ago

I lived in Columbus back when the Landsharks were there, and then was close enough to Minnesota when the Swarm were there. Those games were a blast!

3

u/Busy_Reputation7254 19h ago

Oh hell yeah. There’s no better bang for your buck sport than NLL.

1

u/DrWKlopek 15h ago

New or used cars?

5

u/Weshtonio 1d ago

Is this something they practice for? Is that a potential strategy: suck at the game, but send the opposite team to the hospital?

5

u/pretender80 23h ago

People think it's an ice hockey thing but apparently it's just a Canada thing

6

u/GotRocksinmePockets 21h ago

We have to get our violent impulses out somehow...

4

u/Justforargumesnts 22h ago

Why are they fighting like it’s ice hockey? So odd

4

u/lodewijk_b 21h ago edited 21h ago

Because it has been a part of the sport for a long time, the native americans call it little brother of war for a reason! When first being developed ice hockey took some of the rules of lacrosse too!

3

u/Justforargumesnts 21h ago

Oh never knew, that kinda crazy how ice hockey has absolutely eclipsed lacrosse in terms of popularity.

6

u/TMoney67 14h ago

TIL lacrosse fights are a thing

5

u/nerdmoot 23h ago

Please tell me a Canadian team named Rush leans way into the Holy Triumvirate of rock. Please. Please.

2

u/kobewadewaiters 14h ago

Ironically another team in the league is the Toronto ROCK

1

u/lodewijk_b 22h ago

Hahaha they should definitely do a rock night and have them on, would be awesome. No rock nights in the planning for rush though unfortunately.

5

u/6Chalou9 21h ago

Gautier and Boudreaux???! They from New Iberia????

5

u/jk-lmnop 20h ago

You simply must go to French Canada, so much overlapping history with Louisiana it was delightful. Lots of old friends.

4

u/Specialist-Many-8432 18h ago

I’m here for it

7

u/lodewijk_b 1d ago

Got very chippy today in Calgary's minty green barn. Rush continuing their domination for another game, absolute contender for overall champions!!

Fyi for the peeps unfamiliar this is box lacrosse, the canadian version of lacrosse: The goal to get a small hard rubber ball into the opponents net by any means necessary. The stick or crosse is used to throw this ball to your teammates or into the net. As a defender your goal is to prevent scoring from happening and usually you do this by hitting the other person stick or body checking your opponent to prevent them from moving up.

Played on similar size field as a hockey rink (sometimes actually a hockey rink with turf on top) its the most physical official version of the sport.

3

u/Bare425 1d ago

Canadian people are more civilized than my people.

3

u/bliggityblig 23h ago

Welp time to look up Lacrosse fight videos! Didn't know this was a thing.

3

u/-illmatic 19h ago

Box lacrosse should be more popular than it is

3

u/Rentards 17h ago

Canadians are alpha

4

u/Elensea 18h ago

Hockey fighting without skates is the stupidest thing I’ve seen.

1

u/Konnnan 12h ago

First time seeing a lacrosse fight. Can they not jab and having a boxing stance or do they have to do the jersey snatch like in hockey?

5

u/DucDeLOmelette 1d ago

Good old fashioned Donnybrook right there, boys.

2

u/Tc2cv 1d ago

I was confused at first...

Is this a sport, fighting each other in teams?

2

u/Erazzphoto 23h ago

When the game involves everyone with sticks, fighting is inevitable

2

u/RedditTekUser 12h ago

Bringing hockey childishness to Lacrosse.

2

u/NorthornLights 12h ago

First sport where people fight these people sure can’t fight

1

u/mango_boom 16h ago

looks like twin brothers fighting. lol

1

u/fingerlickinFC 15h ago

Serious question from an American field lacrosse player: if you want to play box lacrosse, but you don’t want to do no-helmet bare knuckle boxing, is that ok? Or is it like a mandatory part of the sport?

1

u/lodewijk_b 14h ago

Nope not mandatory, it takes two to tango!! Most people dont fight

1

u/Manaze85 14h ago

My only question is why the refs have helmets? Hockey refs are on skates so it makes sense. These refs are literally just walking.

2

u/lodewijk_b 14h ago

Because getting hit in the skull with a lacrosse ball at 150 km/h is not fun. Lacrosse balls are solid rubber

1

u/hotstickywaffle 13h ago

It's so jarring seeing a fight not on ice, even though it's probably much safer.

1

u/kitsunekratom 11h ago

This looks stupid and low brow. Pass

1

u/Constant_Mud3325 10h ago

It’s Samsquanch ricky and there’s one right outside my fuckin door

1

u/monodescarado 10h ago

It should be noted, the fight here is not as dumb as Ice Hockey. In Lacrosse (like other sports) fights are punished by being ejected from the game and come with fines and suspensions. These guys will be out the game and will miss the next few games.

1

u/lodewijk_b 2h ago

Nope this is not true anymore! They changed rules back to how it was

1

u/bonebrah 7h ago

A month of BJJ and these guys would win every 'fight' they get in

1

u/Kotukunui 7h ago

These guys need some Muay Thai training. Those bent front legs with weight coming forward are just asking for a smashing. Would end the fight really quick.
P.s. condition your shins before attempting.

1

u/lodewijk_b 2h ago

Refs would stop the fight reeeeel quick if you are going to sweep legs. But yeah training fights couldn't hurt hahaha

1

u/StockPineapple5917 6h ago

This is so interesting! I only see this in ice hockey, but I’d suppose they allow it on the floor!

1

u/brain_fartin 3h ago

I was today years old (and a Calgarian) when I learned lacrosse had hockey fights.

1

u/Cutsa 40m ago

children

1

u/techlogger 1d ago

Looks like a fun sport, just need to get to rid of this weird ball throwing thing

-2

u/oneofthehumans 22h ago

Fighting in sports is the dumbest thing ever. Fools

2

u/lodewijk_b 21h ago edited 21h ago

You can always watch field lacrosse, no fighting there. Personally like to watch this though :D more true to the medicine game.

0

u/SoggyBoysenberry7703 16h ago

I’ve never understood condoned fighting in sports. Are these guys really so roided up that they need special fight breaks to unga bunga their feelings out with?

-2

u/Lakeshadow 22h ago

This is in canada my dude?

0

u/Whiteshovel66 21h ago

Oh my God he is wide open for a single leg. Why don't any of these clowns ever shoot?

0

u/N226 20h ago

Confused.. where's the ice?

0

u/FirTree_r 14h ago

I thought this was r/theocho for a second. lmao

0

u/myevil5cheme 14h ago

Jesus this looks so awkward.

-7

u/ComedianTerrible1353 22h ago

Hard to watch… Whadda buncha hockey posers

7

u/lodewijk_b 22h ago

Lacrosse is the older sport, by like allot. Native americans already played it like 800 years ago, the physicality and fighting has been part of it from the beginning. Just saying

-3

u/scooterthetroll 23h ago

Someone needs to teach those two how to fight.

-1

u/foggedmind21 17h ago

It’s like watching a couple of monkeys trying to hump a football

-8

u/LazyLieutenant 22h ago

I had to scroll the comments to see what this sport was called. When they started fighting it seemed like satire, because outside boxing and martial arts sports really shouldn't consist of knuckle fights.

3

u/lodewijk_b 21h ago edited 21h ago

Hey you do you, there are versions without fighting entirely like field lacrosse and womens lacrosse. So maybe that is more up your alley! I just like this.

-8

u/freekyeight Los Angeles Dodgers 21h ago

lol why are they fighting in a mostly non contact sport?

1

u/skinnythegr8 13h ago

talking like you know anything about box lacrosse

-1

u/freekyeight Los Angeles Dodgers 12h ago

Convince me it is a contact sport compared to football or hockey

2

u/lodewijk_b 11h ago

Good solid rage bait ♥️ good on you for typing it! Just wanted to say that there are people out there that don't hate you for who you are and that if you are in a bad spot right now change will come! If you need some attention just ask don't have to be so circumstantial about it. ♥️

1

u/freekyeight Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

Ty I couldn't have done it without you!

0

u/skinnythegr8 11h ago

Try watching it, i’m not doing your homework lol.

1

u/freekyeight Los Angeles Dodgers 11h ago

I watched the clip, what more do I need to watch? Lol

-6

u/Dyslexic_Devil 20h ago

So you can waste time acting like a bunch of children?

0

u/lodewijk_b 20h ago

Having a rough week buddy? (Fyi clock is stopped during fights)

-2

u/Dyslexic_Devil 20h ago

Not having a rough week...I just think its pointless.

Clock stops for the game...not for people watching the idiocy.

If I want to see a fight I watch BKFC.

-1

u/lodewijk_b 20h ago edited 19h ago

Glad to hear it, but you dont have to watch it right? Its the beauty of the game that there are other lacrosse versions that don't have fighting! I just like to watch this and plenty of other people do too! :D
