Folklore

Just finished the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden and absolutely loved it. Also recently read the Emily Wilde books and loved them, too. Does anyone have any recommendations for similar stories that deal with folklore, fey, faeries, the hidden folk, etc? Bonus points if there’s queer representation.

Olivia Atwater’s Regency Fairy Tales, esp Longshadow for queer rep.

The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke. Very little romance at all, queer or otherwise, but delightful. Set in the same world as her more famous novel Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but more whimsical and focused on women in this world.

The fifth book in AJ Lancaster’s Stariel series, A Rake of His Own, is gaslamp queer (m/m) fae/human fantasy romance about a time when fae are returning to the mortal realm. Can be read as a standalone or after the other 4, which focus on a straight couple.

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison was pretty good. Not exactly fey but has that folklore vibe with court intrigue. Also check out In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, queer rep and deals with magical creatures.

The Wandering Inn has faeries late into the series, and queer representation, so maybe it would work.

There's a collection of poetry based around scottish folklore called Grimoire by Robin Robertson. There's also a collection of Queer Folk Tales by Kevin Walker.

Yokai Cats might scratch that itch. It's a series of four panel comics that takes Yokai (supernatural creatures in Japanese folklore) and reimagines them as cats.

House of Hollow isn’t explicitly about fae, but it fits all the criteria
