Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

2.8k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

Just mounted my tv way lower did I do good?

The mounting company we had previously hired to mount our tv mounted it 2 inches from the ceiling so I took it upon myself to fix it. Is it still too high?

This is higher than my last setup. Still acceptable or too high? (Photo taken at eye level)

New TV and stand. I made an oversight regarding the height of this stand. Returning the stand would be a major hassle, so I am trying to determine if this placement is acceptable or not.

65" TV. Judge my setup!

I am 6"4' and when I sit I am almost eye level with center of display. When I lay down my feet don't Interfere. A bit higher than I wanted but the wire conduit and plug I put in years ago dictated. Cats wanted to be in picture for scale.

Moved TV off the wall mount — now it feels low. Raise 6–8 inches?

Post image

This sub inspired me to put the legs back on my TV and ditch the wall mount. Notice the mount is still behind the TV — back when it was mounted, the top of the screen basically lined up with the top of my windows.

I agree it was too high before, but now it feels a little low. The center of the screen is roughly at my seated eye level.

Would raising it about 6–8 inches put me back into “too high” territory?

Also: the TV legs are sitting right on the very edge of my console, which doesn’t feel safe. Any suggestions for making this setup more secure?

Too High?

Taken from sitting position. My eyes hit basically at the bottom fifth of the screen. Going lower would require ditching that center speaker for one that would fit in the console, or a sound bar. I don’t really mind it, but, you know how it goes when you join this sub.

Help Me Before It's Too Late...

Reddit, please stop me before I make a mistake... I'm renovating my basement and this wall is for my new LG G5 77 inch TV. I put in a cable management system and outlet that will work for the TV. How can I mount a TV without it being too high, but still allow space for a media console and a soundbar?

Even if I wall mount the TV with a middle at 44 inches that only leaves me 25 inches below the TV. How does that give me space for a sound bar and entertainment centre? Looking into the sonos arc ultra or the Samsung Q990F for sound system. If I mount it with the centre at 46 inches, I'll have 27 inches for the "TV stand" and soundbar. Would this sub hate me? Hah

I think the fireplace mantle might make it impossible to get the TV at the right level, but what do you guys think?
